Is it true that JRRT didn't much care for the jocks in the Oxford Rugby Club
and decided to use their initials to name his evil Orcs? Or is this an
urban legend?

On 25 wrz 2003, paulh <ju...@fahncahn.com> scribbled loosely:

Not to mention Birmingham And Leeds Russian Oligarchs Group.

Actually, there isn't an Oxford Rugby Club, so far as I know. There're are the
college teams and Oxford University (which plays in the famous Varsity match
amongst other fixtures.) But I think the Town is more soccer-oriented.

There is, however, most assuredly an Oxford Rowing Club.

I think there is one, just not one that plays rugby. Google has about
161 returns for the phrase, generally pointing to either a sports ground
or a "gentleman's club". Which makes the phrase "jocks in the Oxford
Rugby Club" in the original post questionable. I can't imagine that
they would let a Scotsman join the ORC, unless he were landed gentry or
a former rugby international.

Well ... having now looked at Google, I see that there IS an Oxford Rugby Club
aftre all, based in North Hinksey. It's not a club of any great note however,
and why should it be?

The contemplated contraction would be complicated by the fact that "Rugby" is
itself an abbreviation (for Rugby football), so
as with the North Hinksey team's e-mail contact address, it would be ORFC.

Nothing wrong with North Ainslie of course, albeit it doesn't contain the

No, it's perfecty true. There was G. M. "Slasher" Muzgash, D. O. T. "Masher"
Uglúk and B. R. D. "Cutter" Lagduf. Not to mention the dreaded O. M. "Daisy"
Mauhúr.
