I was told that the Chief of the Uruk-Hai who slew Boromir was actually played
by a famous New Zealand All-Blacks rugby football player -- could it have been
Jonah Lomu, I wonder?

According to the credits, Lurtz was played by Lawrence Makoare.

Uh, Lurtz won't be making any more appearances unless Saruman has
gotten ahold of cloning technology or knows a really good cloning
spell.

Of course he'll be back. "It's just a flesh wound!"

Credits revealing the true identity of the actor notwithstanding,
I actually met Jonah Lomu on a flight to San Francisco, and he's
*much* bigger than Lurtz. I think he was quite amused that I had
no idea who he was.

Lurtz was played by Lawrence Makoare;
Marton Csokas played Celeborn.

New Zealanders!

Another Kiwi in a (small) speaking role was Martyn Sanderson as the
gatekeeper at Bree. He's a classic old character actor, was in 'Utu',
'Desperate Remedies' and pretty much every other New Zealand movie for the
last 30 years.

Thanks for the correction -- I was hoping the All Blacks story was true,
though.

As for your tale about meeting Jonah Lomu,
I have something similar, having met a interesting chap under similar
circumstances. We got chatting about rugby, and I eventually asked him did he
play. He said, yes, and I asked him who for. He said, "Wigan." I had no idea
until the following day that I'd been talking with Great Britain captain,
Ellery Hanley, probably one of the best league players of all time. A bit like
saying to Pele, "Oh, do you play football?"

Lurtz was played by Lawrence Makoare but was replaced by Sala Baker (who is
also cast as Sauron) when Lawrence had to leave the set for prior
commitments.
