I saw the movie Shadowlands a while back. There was a scene where C.S. Lewis
reciting some of his work, and I was wondering if Tolkien would have been
around then. I'm not really up to speed on his history, but I've heard
Tolkien was in a kind of writer's club with Lewis at Oxford.
Regards,
Kelly

I don't think Tolkien actually appeared in the movie, but you are correct
when you say that Tolkien and Lewis were very good friends. They were both
professors of English at Oxford in the same era. As far as I remember,
however, Tolkien became jealous of Lewis' success with the Narnia
books. For more information there's a biography of Tolkien written by
Humphrey Carpenter which I strongly recommend.

In The Silmarillion, in a passage about the War of Wrath, it says:

"But it availed him [Morgoth] not. The Balrogs were destroyed,
save some few that fled and hid themselves in caverns inaccessible
at the roots of the earth;"

Balrogs were used in several battles by Morgoth. There must have been
a lot more than seven.

One of the Balrogs was of course mentioned in LoTR. Does anyone know if
Tolkien ever referred to other Balrogs after the War of Wrath?

I've never seen such a claim. Where did you find it?

I have been quoted several times for my comment about where in
the Silmarillion does it say there are only seven Balrogs? or something
like that. I am not saying there were seven Balrogs. I was asking
a question of a previous post that stated there were only seven.
I firmly beleve there were more then seven (and there probably
still are, its just that us humans aren't smart enough to see them).
Not trying to start a flame war just wanted to set the record straight.

Since this group is blessed with several rich imaginations, I would like
to see some reply's to a what if.

What if Bilbo loses the ring during the excitement following the Battle
of Five Armies. After many years the ring is found by one of the
descendents of Dain (new King Under the Mountain no less). After being
driven from Dol Guldor, Sauron is back at it in Mordor. Gondor is still
steadily declining. However, whats his name dies early and makes
Boromir the new steward of Gondor, and he makes himself King. War breaks
out between the elves in Mirkwood and the the dwarves. What next?

I'm sure there will be some interesting takes on this scenario. I hope
I haven't offended anyone by daring to change some of Tolkien's work.
If I have, Sorry.

Chris
