Thanx in advance...
Humphrey Carpenter has written an excellent study of the group called The
Inklings.
So far so good.

Nope. That was the Coalbiters.

It did? What, were they a secret society trying to revive the Knights
Templars? :)

The best online summary I've found of who the Inklings were and their history
is located at:

You forgot Hugo Dyson, a doctor who was also a regular member of the goup.
There were other, more temporary visitors, among them Dorothy L. Sayers.

I believe Hugo was also an English scholar who taught at the University of
Reading for a while but I may be wrong. He did a series of BBC lectures on
Shakespeare and appeared in The Darling with Julie Christie. He was severly
wounded in WWI, walked with a limp and used to introduce himself with something
like "I'm Hugo Dyson, I'm a bore". He also took part in the night stroll with
JRRT and CSL which led to Lewis' conversion. I think the above is mentioned by
Humphrey Carpenter. There was an M.D. but I forget his name. Christopher
Tolkien also attended some meetings I believe. There was a John Wain who might
have published but I know little about him. I suppose one should also mention
Neville Coghill who translated Chaucer (for Penguin) and wrote at least one
criticism of Chaucer that I know of. Was he an Inkling irregularly? I'm not
sure, but I think he was a Coalbiter and was friendly with CSL.

So do I, and I can't access the book since I am moving house. However, i do
remember that his nickname among the Inklings was U. Q., for "Useless
Quack".
Christopher

John Wain is a quite well-known novelist. He was one of the Angry Young Men
in the fifties, though like the others he became very conservative as he
grew older.

That would be R. E. 'Humphrey' Havard (aka The Red Admiral etc. etc. --
the man acquired nicknames the way I collect titles!)

Dare I mention True Grit? :)
