I recently purchased a poster of the Lord of the Rings
by Jimmy Cauty. It has Gandalf and two Hobbits on it.
I was wondering who those two Hobbits are. I have been trying to get
clues from the background of the poster but they dont seem to help.
Can anyone help me?

I always thought they were Bilbo (blowing the smoke rings) and Frodo.

This is a most excellent poster crammed with detail. I love it!

Cheers,

Bill

It is a great poster, isn't it? I always assumed it was Sam and Frodo, with Sam smoking a pipe (which I think is unusual). I thought maybe the smoker was Bilbo, but why would Bilbo be wearing the same Lorien Cloak that Frodo is wearing? Anyway, the figure looks too young to be Bilbo.

Okay, then who are the two small figures chained to the gold ring
at the top? IMHO the two hobbits are Merry and Pippen, and the
two chained ones are Frodo and Sam. The sword and horn on one of
the hobbits made me think of Merry or Pippen, same with the other's
smoking. Comments, theories?

The hobbit whose shoulder has Gandalf's hand on it seems very much like
Frodo. The one sitting down smoking a pipe I'm not quite sure of. At first I
assumed it was Sam, but now I think it might be Bilbo, and the picture could
be representing a past-to-present kind of theme. I'm not sure about it like
I said, but I'm sure that the one on the right is Frodo.

Neither one has a horn. The one on the right has a sort of sash thing that
one could perhaps mistake for a horn, but it most definitely isn't one. I
had another look at the top of the poster, and the two figures below the
Ring could be anybody. I don't think Merry and Pippin are important enough
to be in the foreground with Gandalf.

Point taken. Oh, and I wasn't referring to the sash as the horn, but what
must be the sword sheath. You can see the mouth of sheath, and, to me at
least, it looks alot like a horn mouth as well. (Still could be IMHO :-)
Those two figures have to be connected somehow though, and they look
exactly like how I pictured Frodo and Sam in Mordor. Guess it's all in the
interpretation. Heck, the two in the middle ARE most likely Frodo and Bilbo,
but the two at the top are--IN MY UNBELIEVABLY STUBBORN MIND--Frodo and Sam.

Ok the Hobbit with the sword, is that not Sting? Merry or Pippin did not own this sword so i am thinking its Frodo and Bilbo sitting on the other side. Also the two Hobbits at the Top are Frodo and Sam, Frodo could be on the poster twice??

I suspect you mean in the margin to the viewer's right, and Galdalf's
left. That would be Aragorn: the Star of Elendil on his brow, Andúril
at his side.

Now who is that on our left? Galadriel? Arwen?

The two Hobbits at Gandalf's either side? I always assumed they were
Frodo and Sam. Some have suggested that the one sitting and blowing
smoke rings is Bilbo, but I don't think he looks old enough.

Amazing art work for a 17-year-old. One of my favorite posters. I
finally had it framed after years of abuse in the dorm rooms!

And which of the 10,600 hits that appear contains a picture with a
crowned guy to the right of Gandalf? I looked through the first dozen
or so pages and could not find anything worth mentioning. Most of the
images were barely legible.

There are at least two:

One with Gandalf standing between two Hobbits. No crowned guys in
evidence. The Hobbit on his right is ... of all things, in a sleeping
bag. The one on his left is holding sword. Not a dagger, mind you,
but a Hobbit-sized sword. Most images with Gandalf are clearly of this
poster, or at least of portions of it.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artistsuk.co.uk%2Facatalog%2FTolkienPoster_Cauty.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artistsuk.co.uk%2Facatalog%2FOTHER_ARTISTS_LORD_OF_THE_RINGS_PRINTS_POSTERS.html&h=452&w=301&tbnid=Up9Zii0MvvuZ4M%3A&zoom=1&docid=As0Qnp7-hqMLDM&ei=N2aUVKG3C9OiyATBrYCgAw&tbm=isch&ved=0CCAQMygCMAI&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=1188&page=1&start=0&ndsp=20

This is clearly the Gandalf from above, separated from his companions
and frame:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmashadutoit.files.wordpress.com%2F2009%2F04%2Fgandalf.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fmashadutoit.com%2F2009%2F04%2F18%2Fa-rivalry-of-wizards%2F&h=485&w=350&tbnid=6xm1IXfqSQRh1M%3A&zoom=1&docid=RWEjx8O3axvPCM&ei=N2aUVKG3C9OiyATBrYCgAw&tbm=isch&ved=0CCcQMygJMAk&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=691&page=1&start=0&ndsp=20

One (fellowshiptravels) with Gandalf striding forward, leading the
Fellowship of the Ring on its journey to Morder. OK, they don't get
there, but that is where they are headed.

I'm not sure where you got the sleeping bag from. There's a hobbit sitting with a smirk on his face blowing smoke rings. Sam, IMO. No sleeping bag in evidence.

The OP used the word "crown", not me. But he was clearly referring to the long-haired man to the viewer's right with a shining gem attached to a fillet on his head.

It's a famous and very popular poster Paul. To most, it is *the* Jimmy Cauty poster. You can buy one for less than $10 on Ebay or Amazon. A lot of us own it and don't need a link. Clearly the OP and I both own it.

No, Legolas is on the bottom left, "Legolas Greenleaf" written under him in runes. No crown. Gimli is to the viewer's right at the bottom, name written in English. Helm, but no crown. I suggested that it is Aragorn to the right, wearing what appears to be the Star of Elendil on his brow. The OP chose to call it a crown, but I didn't let that confuse me. I suggest you try to do the same.

I got it from the image. Whoever it is is totally encased in
something. It even covers his head. And there is no smoking evident.

It came up on google as an image from /your/ search criteria.

And it has no attribution, so how, exactly, am I supposed to know?

The "Visit page" link just brings up a list of JRRT posters, not
information on this particular one so, as usual, it is useless.

Perhaps google should stay focused.

I think you are still talking about the frame.

Sorry, I was only concerned with the image.

Smoking, crowns/fillets, etc, etc in the frame are ... well, they
aren't visible in the image.

Indeed, I find the images most uninteresting.

I think you'd like them more if you looked at the actual poster. It is indeed hard to make things out in the on-line pics. The artist captures a grittiness that I don't see in a lot of even more mature Tolkien artists -- and Cauty was only 17 when he did it. Sure, the characters all look like heavy metal musicians (hence the long hair on the sitting hobbit you mistook for a sleeping bag), but hey, it was the early 70's afterall. :-)

All I can recommend is getting the poster yourself, or maybe as gift to some young Tolkien fan.

Can you talk me through that using NewsTap on an iPad? Or perhaps not make
