I hope this is a real on-topic posting again...
There is some very strange aspect of my imaginations about Gandalf I noticed
during a conversation with a friend about lotr.
Just when we were talking about the early years of middle-earth, the first
years of Gandalf´s "Life" and about the time when the first dwarf lived
there I suddenly noticed, that all the book I imagined, the Gandalf was a
dwarf! I know that it is wrong now. He is just a wizard, not of any race.
Before that conversation i didn´t know much more about it all than the book
tells us. But i played some rpg before. So I had known, that dwarfs don´t
like magical power. But I never thought about my imagination of Gandalf. I
recognized it the first time at this conversation. Perhaps the reason
therefor
is the description of Gandalf as a stoop walking person. I know that dwarfs
aren´t stoop walking, but these descriptions make Gandalf smaller in my
mind.
So I want to know how is your imagination of Gandalf.
Perhaps you know where i can find some pictures of him.

Whoa!!! Hadn't heard that one before!

Not neccesarily a good guide to Tolkien.

I've always seen Gandalf as being a fairly tall man that just stoops most of
the time. Because he stoops, he looks small (for a human) and not very
imposing. But when he stands up straight he is very tall and a very
imposing person.

AFAIK, Tolkien himself never drew a picture of Gandalf but every picture of
him I've ever seen had him man size. Tolkien does say that the wizards came
in the bodies of men.

However, Tolkien did preserve a picture postcard which he labelled "Origin of
Gandalf." It's of a painting entitled "Das Berggeist" (The Mountain-spirit) by
a second-tier German painter, and depicts an old man with a white beard, a tall
hat, and a staff, seated in on a mountainside petting a deer. Probably a v.
good guide to Gandalf's appearance!
Tolkien did indeed paint/draw Gandalf. You can find the images in J.R.R.
TOLKIEN: ARTIST & ILLUSTRATOR by Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull. Many
bookstores carry the book in their Art sections, rather than in Science
Fiction and Fantasy.

Me to, he also appeared in my imagination as hairy and wrinkly.

Well, I suppose being wrinkly would be a natural attribute for an old man to
have. As far as hairy goes, the only parts of his body we ever see are his
hands and his face. His face is covered in a big huge beard and he has
eyebrows like you wouldn't believe! I don't know about his hands, though.
;-)
I really hope someone doesn't start a thread on that :). Also for some
reason, but only at the start of LOTR, when I picture him walking he
rolls slightly from side to side.

I've always liked the paintings done by the Hildebrandt Brothers...it's a
shame they don't do the calendars any more (at least none that I've seen...)
And there's the 'classic' poster by J.Cauty, all done in browns and pale
greens...of Gandalf with an arm around Frodo on his left and Sam sitting by
his right and you see Gimly on the bottom left, Gollum in the center and
...hmmm...one of the Elves on the bottom right (which one is it ?) I've
always thought it was Elrond seated on the horse under the castle...but I'm
probably wrong...

That must be the poster I have over my bed! I'm pretty sure that's
Bilbo sitting with his pipe on Gandalf's right (he's *much* older looking
than Frodo). Gimli is in the bottom *right* and Legolas is in the bottom
*left*. Above Legolas is Galadriel and I'm almost certain it's Aragorn
above Gimli. He's on a horse and has a shining jewel on his forehead. I
think the castle is Minas Tirith.
IMO, Legolas and Aragorn look anorexic, Galadriel looks stoned, and
Gimli looks like a mop. Frodo and Bilbo are okay but Gandalf makes up for
it all. He is really the only picture of a character from a book that I
actually thought looked *more* like the character than my personal vision
did. He's got a big grey cloak, a cool looking staff, Glamdring by his
side, a big grey hat, flowing beard, big bushy eyebrows, and the Ring of
Fire shining out from his hand as he clutches his staff. *VERY* cool.

Good point...he does look older
Gimli is in the bottom *right* and Legolas is in the bottom
>*left*.
(*snap* Legolas !!! Thank you !...I really must re-read my copies again...)
Well depends ...when you *look* at the poster, yes, they are, but *on* the
poster...hmmm, wait that doesn't make any sense...If you were *in* the
poster...as one of the characters say...looking out at the viewer...THEN
Gimly would be on the bottom left ...etc.
* =) Yeah ok...I'm grasping at straws...You make more sense but *I* made
sense to me at the time last night...*
Gandalf makes up for

Agreed...and at least we can both agree he's in the center of the painting
*grin* (seriously though, thanks for correcting me on the characters, tis
greatly appreciated =) )

Any idea where one would obtain a copy of this poster?

I took a speed reading course and was able to read 'War and Peace' in twenty
minutes. It's about Russia.
Wild how points get lost.

I found it in a college bookstore near Emory University in Atlanta. I've
never seen it for sale since.

I took a speed reading course and was able to read 'The Lord of the Rings'
in twenty
minutes. It's about short people.
I thought this was another Cuteboy's flatmate incident at first.
Maybe Cuteboy's flatmate's should be the evil villans in the comic :).
