Sam married Rose Cotton, didn't he?
Rose Cotton.

Don`t take this personally, but if you have read LOTR, as I assume, you
should know here name. If not, I suggest that you read it once more.
-Wullis
so, 'Elrond', are you saying that to qualify for posting on this ng you
have to be knowledgable about tolkien and his works rather than being a
simple fan?
if so, your reply was valid. if not, it was rude and elitist, and
hardly befitting someone dubbing themselves 'Elrond' !

Yes.........Sam married Rose and they had a baby daughter called Ellenor.
Make that "Elanor" after the little golden flower in the grass of
Lothlórien.
Cheers,
Chas.
I thought it was spelt Rosie.

Either way its a "free" news group and the subject was on topic.
No matter how basic or advanced the question, if its on topic(not spam) then he
has every right to post. It sounds like YOU, Tor, are being elitist, by saying
a newbie doesnt have the right to ask what you consider a basic question.
I hope your not a 'liberal', if you are thought, were is the "tolerence" your
always ranting about?
Yep, many of them are, sometimes inconsistenly. The Swedish translator
obviously went for sound similarity rather than a literal translation, so
Rose Cotton is called Rosa Kattun IIRC.
This type of non-literal translation could be argued against (and frequently
is by the countless Ohlmarks bashers) but Rosa Bomull sounds like a joke in
Swedish, it actually translates back to Pink Cotton. Sam Ull instead of Sam
Gamgi doesn't appeal to me either (sounds more like Samuel) so I generally
prefer it the way it is. You'll lose some details in the process but that's
unavoidable anyway.
Tenderfoot
Elanor and Frodo and Rose and Merry and Pippin and Goldilocks and Hamfast
and Daisy and Primrose and Bilbo and Ruby and Robin and Tolman. Sheesh!
Were they hobbits or rabbits!
exactly so. this is my view and the point i was trying to get across.

i think you'll find that i never said that. i was asking for elrond's
opinion of what constitutes a valid post. you'll also find that i
believe the opposite.

actually i'm an anarchist, though what that has to do with anything, i'm
not sure... and i would be pleased if you could site any examples of my
'ranting' about 'tolerance'.
seriously though, i do believe that its anyone's right to post (spam
excluded), no matter how basic the question. sometimes newbies get
scared off by replies such as elrond's though. i can't agree with that,
but that's just my opinion, and i dont 'own' the newsgroup any more than
anyone else. sincerest apologies to anyone i offended. :)

(SNIPPERS)
Since there are a lot of nationalities present, could you let me know
how the names of the main characters are? Here are some Dutch starters.
Frodo Baggins : Frodo Balings ("baal" means "bag")
Merry Brandybuck : Merijn Brandebok
Pippin Took : Pepijn Toek
Sam Gamgee : Sam Gewissies (no meaning, sounds friendly and funny, link
to "Samwise", "gewis" is archaic Dutch for "sure")
Rose Cotton : Roosje Katoen
Strider : Stapper (closer to "Trotter" :)
Barliman Butterbur : Gersteman (translated) Boterbast (not a plant.
Literary means: Butterbast, Butterbark, but also Butterbelly)
Most names are the same as in English. Sometimes this is confusing. For
example: Rivendell is translated as Rivendel, which has no meaning in
Dutch. It would be something like "Beekdael", or "Rivierdael".
Let me know if you are inquisitive for other translations.
Ron Ploeg
In the portuguese translations the names were kept in their original form, I
think... I don't remember it much, it's been awhile since I've read it in
Portuguese, but if I find it I'll look them up. The portuguese translator was
very carefull in marking everything that did not maintain it's original form, in
footnotes and in the end. The traslation was *very* good and consistent, it
didn't lose anything t the original...

Then you dont understand true anarchism. (with all due respect, without
wishing to cause any offense)
Sorry, but when you say "if so, your reply was valid" it appears you are
agreeing w/ what you previously qualify Elronds statement to mean. (i.e. only
Tolkien 'experts' may post here)
If this wasnt your intention, then good, I am glad. Perhaps theres some
difference in dialect at work here.
