I've just finished to read the hobbit and in it there are references to
this character called 'The Necromancer' that Gandalf went to drive away
from Mirkwood with the council of Wizards.
Could it be that it's merely Sauron? Or is it just a stupid question?
...because, well it is said that they pushed him back to the southern
territories of Middle Earth...

It's Sauron, I believe. . . . . although I wouldn't use "merely" for the head
bad guy of Middle Earth.

It's Sauron. In LOTR, Gandalf speaks of the white council having driven Sauron
from his stronghold in Mirkwood, where he just began to take shape for the first
time since the cutting of the ring from his finger by Isuldur.
