Known as "Gollum" for the sound he made in his throat, his
original name was 'Smeagol' with an acute accent above the 'e'.
I've always pronounced it "smay-a-goll" since I worked out that
JRRT meant something when he put accents in. Any advance on the
pronunciation?

I agree that it looks as if it should pronounced as two separate
sound (although I'm not sure about the 'ay', an 'e' could be just
as correct). However, Tolkien reads the name on the "JRR Tolkien
Collection" audio tapes, and he says 'SmEE-gol'.
