Multi User in Middle Earth (MUME)

MUME is a 'mud'.

For those who do not know what a mud is, I'll just say that it is an interactive
multi user game (Multi User Dungeon) that runs on one machine and where people
of the whole world may connect - if they have a telnet access - in order to
play a character.

In Mume, we have adapted most of the rules of MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing
game - ICE) and created (based on Tolkien's LOTR, Hobbit, Silmarillon & UT)
a part (not all, yet) of Middle Earth.

There, you may travel from the Grey Havens to Rivendell, from Bree to Tharbad,
fight the Wights of the Barrow-downs, meet Tom or Gandalf or being killed...
When you have gained enough levels, you may become an Istar and after that,
passing in the West, an Ainur. Then you may build a part of the world too.
The local 'time' is about 50 years before Bilbo's birth (3rd age).

To play MUME: telnet disun8.epfl.ch, port 4000.

Again, referring to "A Guide to Middle Earth" (arent ya gonna get sick
of it?), Beorn was a berzerker, and was "in general distrustful of all
strangers". Well, maybe it's just me, but the thought of a short, red
faced berzerker, wearing big yellow boots, and a pointed hat with a
blue feather just dosent work. Also, Frodo and his friends were
pretty much strangers to the Old Forest, and therefore, Tom had
never seen them.. Well, to me, at least, Tom didnt seem very distrustful
of Frodo et all...

Excellent Mud.
One question-
How do you set your skills, languages, spells, etc at the start?
How do you see a list of these which your character possesses in the game?
What skills/spells are available?

Besides, wasn't Beorn a rather large, dark skinned, dark haired man? That
descrition just doesn't fit the character of Bombadil at all (in my mind).
Also, Beorn and Bombadil lived in different forests, didn't they?

Perhaps this kind of questions may be discussed on Mume :-)
Anyway a 'help' command and 'help <keyword>' command is available.
(for instance: 'help spells'...)

An age-old question is how God could allow evil to occur in the world.
I think Tolkien was interested in this question, and I think he explains
more eloquently than anyone else with his theory (at least as far as Middle
Earth is concerned) in his works, especially the Silmarillion. One
of my favorite passages:

And Iluvatar spoke to Ulmo, and said: 'Seest thou not how here
in this little realm in the Deeps of Time Melkor hath made war
upon thy province? He hath bethought him of bitter cold
immoderate, and yet hath not destroyed the beauty of thy fountains,
nor of thy clear pools. Behold the snow, and the cunning work
of frost! Melkor hath devised heats and fire without restraint,
and hath not dried up thy desire nor utterly quelled the music of
the sea. Behold rather the height and glory of the clouds, and
the everchanging mists; and listen to the fall of rain upon the
Earth! And in these clouds thou art drawn nearer to Manwe, thy
friend, whom thou lovest.'
Then Ulmo answered: 'Truly, Water is become now fairer than my
heart imagined, neither had my secret thought conceived the snowflake,
nor in all my music was contained the falling of the rain. I will
seek Manwe, that he and I may make melodies for ever to thy delight!'
And Manwe and Ulmo have from the beginning been allied, and in all
things have served most faithfully the purpose of Iluvatar.

There are 2 addresses:

- lbdsun4.epfl.ch 4000 (128.178.77.5) is the 'real' Mume.
- disun8.epfl.ch 4000 (128.178.79.56) is the test-Mume; used when the other one
is down... (which, of course, never happens...)

I'm afraid you've got Beorn and Tom Bombadil mixed together.

Tom Bombadil lived in the Old Forest just east of the Shire, whereas
Beorn lived between the river Anduin and the Dark Forest (Mirkwood?),
on the other side of the Misty Mnts.
