Hi,
I need to acquire or construct a map of middle earth during the second
age: that is, after the drowning of Beleriand but before the drowning of
Numenor. I have the *third* age LOTR maps, and these seem to be
consistent with the various *second* age stories. However, the
Silmarilon states that middle earth changed greatly during the drowning
of Numenor:

"And all the coasts and seaward regions of the western world suffered
great change and ruin in that time; for the seas invaded the lands, and
shores foundered, and ancient isles were drowned, and new isles were
uplifted; and hills crumbled and rivers were turned into strange
courses".
(Akallabeth)

Can anyone point me to such a map or describe to me what were the
differences between the geography of second-age and third-age middle
earth?

Thanks,
Joe

"Unfinished Tales" is a good start (and a cracking good read for
Tolkien fans)

Thanks for the reply. I've read "unfinished tales" many times but I
don't recall anything in there that specifically addresses changes in
geography of middle earth caused by drowning of Numenor. What exactly
are you referring to?

Joe

Hi,
What's the evidence for this? (Especially the "by intention" part)

I'm still trying to find out how the Sea of Helcar became the Sea of
Rhun and Mordor.

Now on the Porter-Niekum menu:

FRENCH fries (from Idaho probably)
FRENCH-roast coffee (from South America most likely)
FRENCH'S mustard (pretty lame-n-tame but WTF)
FRENCH dip sandwiches at the corner greasyspoon

NO "Freedom ticklers," NO "Freedom kissing," and NO "Mr. Freedom on
reruns of "Family Affair"!

not really.
your quote that i snipped is the best.
there are some writings dealing with how the Numenoreans changed the
environment around the coasts near Dunland but that wouldn't affect the
coastline.

Steuard Jenson gave a hint in an earlier post that he believed that there
were (large?) fragments of Beleriand left over from the 1st Age into the 2nd
but i don't know what his source is.
ask him.

This issue (first age-> second age changes) seems well resolved. All
the sources I've looked at agree that Lindon and the Ered Luin are the
remnants of what was, in the first age, the *Eastern* border of
Beleriand (1). What I'm looking for are the changes near the end of the
second age.

(1) a question does occur to me: is there any indication where the area
that became Lindon in the second age was located North South along the
Ered Luin in the first age?

Nice description of this can be found here: (I assume it's accurate?)
