I just saw that someone is going to be Ghan-Buri-Ghan in the LOTR movie.

But, who is Ghan-Buri-Ghan? Can't remember him from either The Hobbit,
LOTR or Silmarillion.

I checked out Unfinished Tales, and found some references to him, but
the info was diffuse.

Can someone please enlighten me on this, and also tell me what he has to
do with the LOTR-story.

(All I know is that he was a drúedain).

He's the LEADER of the Woses (i.e. Druedain), and he made alliance with king
Theoden against Sauron. His folks served as scouts for the Rohirs (guiding,
orc-hunting).
Ghan-Buri-Ghan knew ancient paths and guided all the rohir army so they
could reach Minas Tirith on time. He's a minor, but crucial character,
because without him the rohirs would have arrived too late to fight on the
Pellenor fields, and the White Tower would have been reduced to ruins.

Nope, he was one of the wild men. He helps out the riders of Rohan.

Same bunch, Marc... the wild men were close relatives of the Druedain
who accompanied the Folk of Haleth to Beleriand:

An emigrant branch of the Druedain accompanied the Folk of Haleth
at the end of the First Age, and dwelt in the Forest [of Brethil]
with them. But most of them had remained in the White Mountains,
in spite of their persecution by later-arrived Men, who had
relapsed into the service of the Dark.

(From _Unfinished Tales_, in the chapter on the Druedain, of all places.)

Hi,

Here is what Robert Foster's book says:

"Man, chieftain of the Woses. During the WR Ghân-buri-Ghân guided the
Rohirim through Druadan Forest, thus enablinmg them to avoid the superior
force of the Orcs and Easterlings guarding the Great West Road. Also called
Ghân (III 129-33, 313)"

It also says that the Woses are:

"Primitive Men living in Druadan Forest at the time of the WR. They had
lived there at least since the Second Age, and although they did not dare to
oppose Sauron openly, they hated and feared him. in the Third Age they seem
occasionnaly to have been hunted for sport by the Rohirrim. During the WR,
the Woses, under their chieftain, Ghân-buri-Ghân, led the Rohirrim through
Druadan Forest so that they could avoid the Orc-army on the West Road. In
return for this service, at the beginning of the Fourth age King Elessar
gave Druadan Forest to the Woses and forbade any outsider to enter it
without their permission.

The Woses were culturally primitive, but were wood-crafty; they used
poisoned arrows. Their language was entirely alien to Adűanic.

Also called the Wild Men of the Woods or of Druadan Forest (III
128,129,313,505,508-09)"

In these citations, "III" refers to "The Return Of The King".

This should completely answer your question, if not ask for more.

In truth.. no one really knows much about  the enigmatic Ghan-Buri-Ghan.
Not many people noticed him standing behind Saruman smoking a cigarette, seeming giving advice....  and then behind the Witch-King, also smoking a cigarette.

The Lone Ringsmen (namely Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel) spent years looking into his real identity. They suspected , without official proof, that G.H.H Man , as he came to be known, was somehow responsible for the "assassination" of Isildur. But the problem was :EVERYONE knew the Orcs were responsible for that.

Fangorn once had a theory that someone must have abducted the Entwives somehow....is it connected?
Even Aragorn long knew that the corruption of the Palantiri must have been the work of a master conspiracy to use mind control to rule the world.

So don't ask me who Ghan-Buri-Ghan really is.. I cannot tell you.
But watch your back.. ALways!

The Ring is out there!!!

Guess i need to reread Unfinished tales, forgot that the wildmen and
Druedain were one and the same. Thanks for the correction. :-)

He was the chieftain of the Woses, a primitive type of Men living in
Druadan Forest, at the time of the War of the Ring. He hated Orcs and
therefore led the Rohirrim through Druadan Forest to avoid a large force of
Orcs sent by Sauron to guard the road from Edoras to Minas Tirith in order
to prevent the Rohirrim from aiding Gondor.
