PAULA MEADOWS, a good looking lady. Done a film in early 80's with

After discussing the work of John Lindsay (BTW isn't time someone re-
released Mary Millington's videos since it was recently the 20th
anniversary of her death. I once had a few of them, alas no longer)
Flint goes on -
"Britain's only other high profile hardcore director until recently was
Mike Freeman. He had been involved in the porn business since the mid-
Sixties, though his career has tended to be punctuated by spells in
prison ... Freeman's Sixties output consisted of fairly anonymous loops,
shot under names like 'Venus' and 'Climax', and were initially shot in
black and white with no sound, moving up to colour and sound after his
first prison sentence ended. Upon his release from prison in 1980, he
saw that 8mm was a dying business, and immediately moved into the still-
developing video market.
" Like John Lindsay, Freeman took advantage of the legal confusion
surrounding video at the time. Not only was there no form of censorship
in place prior to 1984, but it was uncertain whether or not videotapes
were covered by the existing obscenity laws (it was quickly, and
unsurprisingly, established that they were). During this time, American
and European hardcore tapes were openly sold in Britain - some as
imports, others distributed by Soho porn barons the Holloways through
their Rippledale label.
"Freeman set up a company called Videx and began production of waht he
rather sombrely called 'videograms'. Over the next couple of years he
produced a large number of generally horrible tapes which, like
Lindsay's Taboo videos, were sold through ads in mainstream video
magazines (and, like Lindsay's films, were reviewed negatively ...).
"Of all Freeman's output at this time only TRUTH OR DARE (1980) has any
significant number of supporters. this film saw the first appearance of
Paula Meadows, who would later make a handful of hardcore films in
America; she also starred in Freeman's spanking tape, HAPPY BIRTHDAY
(aka WHAT A WONDERFUL FEELING, 1980)"
Flint doesn't mention Lindsay Honey in connection with Truth or Dare, at
this point, but read on. Skipping a few paragraphs relating a further
prison term:
"... Upon release in 1987, he formed a new label with the unlikely name
of Puff Video, and began to produce a series of softcore striptease
tapes. He also tried to re-package earlier Videx tapes, editing them
into shorts and compiling them into four volumes of SEXY STORIES. This
was fraught with problems though - the BBFC refused to pass three of
them, even with R18 ratings ..., although the first had been passed 18
(with almost five minutes of cuts). Freeman appealed against the
decision, but then threw in the towel and relocated the business to
Amsterdam where it seemed to vanish. ...
"With Freeman locked away [i.e. in the early to mid-eighties] Videx was
briefly kept going by Lindsay Honey. Honey (who had appeared in front of
the camera fro Freeman in LADY VICTORIA'S TRAINING [also starring Tuppy
Owens] and TRUTH OR DARE), made ROCK'N'ROLL RANSOM (1982) before the
Videx dream finally collapsed."
Linzi Drew is not mentioned by Flint in this connection at all. However
the date looks right for your recollection Enzo. It may have been one of
the re-packaged versions referred to.

The title "Rock and Roll Ransom" rings a bell. As far as I remember, the
plot (such as it was) involved a rock band travelling to a concert. Their
coach breaks down in a small rural village where ghostly goings-on are
happening.
There is a (not particularly subtle) subtext of devil worship. The female
cast was made up of quite well known models from the time, including Linzi
Drew. There is one scene where Linzi is chained up in a basement with a guy
fondling her breasts. Linzi has an (apparently real) orgasm..... Another
scene that I remember quite clearly is of two girls making love. These
girls were well known faces who had both appeared in Fiesta the same month
that I saw the video. The lesbian action was clearly real, although there
were no detailed close-ups of the sort we are familiar with in modern
hardcore.
A third scene I remember involved the band members having an orgy in the
open air. Again the action was real, without any close-ups. Maybe this
will jog someone's memory. Hopefully, we might even get Ben Dover himself
to confirm or deny the titles.
I wonder if the masters to these videos still exist. It would be interesting
if a modern distributor could make them available again.

Ben Dover is one of the best of the gonzo directors as he often (not
always) tries to create a situation. Witness the other thread (... Look
at this Ben Dover mpeg ...) where someone mentions an mpeg of Ben
Dover's 9th on a website and asks whether the situations are real. (I
assume the poster is American from the use of the term guys, but I may
be mistaken.)
This erotic situation stuff doesn't apply to the Mary Millington videos
as they were pretty crude, but are certainly of historical interest and
should also be re-released. I know there was a Dutch company which
released them a few years ago. I can't remember their name but I know
they were taken over by Tabor. My copies fell prey to my storage
problems which I have mentioned here before.
According to Flint and to Simon Sheridan ("Come Play with Me": The Life
and Films of Mary Millington. pub. 1999) there is one print of Come Play
with Me which has hard-core scenes included still in existence but
mouldering away somewhere on the south coast. (this book is a useful
source of information about seventies British models who dipped a toe
(no jokes please) into hard core such as Suzy Mandel.

rumour has it that it was shown only once, by accident, in a late night

address in the faded sea-side resort of Westcliffe-on-Sea."
