I have this feeling that I'm writing these reports to myself and only
one or two other people. Perhaps things will clear up soon. <sigh>
This is my TV Report for Wednesday January 12, 2000. All times listed
are PACIFIC, so please be sure to check local listings for the times in
YOUR area:
(NOTE: Please see my Monday and Tuesday TV Reports for details about
those shows which air every day)
SYNDICATED (12:35 a.m. Ch.9 in L.A.--Repeat of the 3:00 p.m. airing the
previous day) "NATIONAL ENQUIRER TV" (:30)
(According to Mark, there will be a feature story on Prince William!!
The title of their story is "Prince William's Wild Ways." Hmm, sounds
intriguing)
2:00 a.m. Disney Channel "SO DEAR TO MY HEART" (1:25)
(Highly regarded 1948 [TV Guide] or 1949 [IMDb] film about a boy and his
pet ram/lamb. Apparently there is some animation mixed in among the
live action. Starring in this is child star BOBBY DRISCOLL, born in
March of 1937; so he was somewhere around 10-12 years old when this film
was made. Also in the cast are PATRICK CURTIS, born in 1938, and DANIEL
HAIGHT, age or date-of-birth unknown. A user-reviewer at IMDb says:
"One of my favorite movies of all time! This is one of the best Disney
movies ever made. It is a story of a boy and his black lamb. But it
teaches you a lot about life. Academy Award winning song Lavender Blue
is sung by Burl Ives. Mostly live acting with tastefully done
animation." I haven't actually seen this myself, so I'm looking forward
to taping and watching it)
6:45 a.m. HBO "MAKING OF 'GREAT EXPECTATIONS'" (:15)
(As we know, the movie this story is about stars ETHAN HAWKE, and
includes JEREMY JAMES KISSNER as the 10-year-old version of Ethan's
character)
ALERT!!! ALERT!!!
7:30 a.m. HBO-Plus "SHADRACH" (1:30)
(I finally watched this film when it was on recently, and it was
indeed FABULOUS!! EXCELLENT cast, TERRIFIC story, BEAUTIFULLY
photographed, some visually pleasurable scenes, all make for a
TERRIFIC movie!!
Philo D. first brought this film to our attention in December of 1998.
He noted that there are 2 boys in the film, played by SCOTT TERRA and
DANIEL TREAT. ACTUALLY, there are 3 boys in the movie. The young
version of the title character, age 11-12-ish, is played by an actor
whose name is unknown to me [see the picture link below for a photo of
him]. I suppose I can pull out my tape of the film and look at the
closing credits, but I don't have time right now to do that. Anyway,
Billy Sinclair then told us the following about the movie:
"It's a 1935 depression-era story told from the point of view of a
young boy Paul, beautifully played by Scott Terra. The IMDB doesn't
list any other credits for him. He is not quite a teen but soon will
be and should do great things.
"It's a story (by William Styron) of a well-off white kid who is
staying with a down-on-their-luck family in Virginia when a 99 year
old Black man just shows up: he had been born a slave on their
property, and has walked all the way from Alabama to die and be buried
in the place of his birth. Problems of course ensue.
"It's about ordinary people with problems of their own behaving
decently to a stranger. There is no viciousness, no violence or
cruelty, lots of bad language (to the delight of the kid): even the
element of racism, essential to the story, is portrayed without
snarling. A couple of bareass swiming-hole scenes if that's what
you're into. A really super movie.
Billy"
You can see pictures from this movie at:
http://www.stargalaxy.com/img_page/MG/1/8/8/4/index.html )
8:00 a.m. HBO "DRAGONWORLD: THE LEGEND CONTINUES" (1:25)
(Until I listed this a few months ago, I had never heard of it.
According to TV Guide: "Fairies leave a young boy in charge of
protecting a baby dragon from the wrath of an evil knight." DRAKE BELL,
possibly 10-ish, is the star)
8:15 a.m. Showtime "TOMMY TRICKER AND THE STAMP TRAVELLER" (1:45)
(Once I finally watched this, I found I loved it! It's not a "deep"
film, but is highly enjoyable. The film has several young actors of
note in it, led by LUCAS EVANS and ANTHONY ROGERS. I do recommend you
catch it if you haven't already!)
9:20 a.m. The Movie Channel "PLACES IN THE HEART" (1:55)
(Thanks to Daryld for helping with some information on this 1984 film.
Sally Field's son is played by pre-teen young actor YANKTON HATTON,
exact age unknown. Daryld says that he doesn't get a lot of screen
time. He also said: "This film might not really be of that much
interest t-i ways but it is worth watching." I was able to catch part
of this a few weeks ago. Yankton appeared to me to be around 10-ish
in the film. High-quality acting was apparent from all)
10:00 a.m. HBO-Plus "HOUSE ARREST" (1:50)
(Stars the very good and very cute [and as we found out, very old]
KYLE HOWARD [a candidate for the "best hair" discussion we had awhile
back]!! Co-stars MOOKY ARIZONA, who previously appeared in "Camp
Nowhere." Enjoyable film!)
11:30 a.m. HBO "DEAD POETS SOCIETY" (2:10)
(Captain Cook's all-time favorite movie! Stars a number of
mid-to-older-teen-appearing actors, led by ETHAN HAWKE, and including
ROBERT SEAN LEONARD and a bunch of others!)
FOR AS LONG AS HE'S IN THE CAST, I *HAVE TO* LIST THIS:
ALERT!!!!!!!! ALERT!!!!!!!!! ALERT!!!!!!!!!!
1:00 p.m. (Mon-Fri) CBS "AS THE WORLD TURNS" (1:00)
(The INCREDIBLY TALENTED young actor JOSEPH CROSS, now a young-looking
mid-13, appeared on this show quite a bit the last few weeks. Watch
this and enjoy the talents of THE AMAZING JOSEPH CROSS!!)
1:00 p.m. Lifetime "JONATHAN: THE BOY NOBODY WANTED" (2:00)
(1992 TV Movie about a teen with Down's Syndrome, and the custody battle
that engulfs him. Also in the cast are K.C. CLARIZIO as "Jonathan Age
6," BRANDON BAUER as "Jonathan Ages 11-13," and a VERY nice guy IRL,
CHRIS DEMETRAL at 15-16!!)
1:30 p.m. Showtime "FAST GETAWAY II" (1:35)
(I know this is really a difficult concept to grasp, but this movie is a
SEQUEL to "Fast Getaway." <g> Starring here, as in the reasonably
decent first movie, is one of my all-time favorites, COREY HAIM!!!)
THIS ISN'T FAIR. BIG GAPS OF TIME TODAY WITH NOTHING GOOD ON, AND NOW
THEY THROW 3 **EXCELLENT** MOVIES AT US ALL AT THE SAME TIME, FORCING US
TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM:
ALERT!
3:00 p.m. TCM "A YANK AT ETON" (1:30)
(This film is from 1942, and is set at one of the most famous boys'
boarding schools in the entire world!! MICKEY ROONEY stars as the Yank;
he's about age 21-22 here, but looking much younger. Also in the cast
are longtime great child star FREDDIE BARTHOLOMEW, and a TON of others.
ANY movie set at Eton will be GREAT viewing!! Remember those pictures
of Prince William about 5 years ago, when he entered Eton? Did you see
all those handsome young people? Well, this movie is full of similar
young people!)
GREAT ACTOR ALERT!!
3:10 p.m. The Movie Channel "VALMONT" (2:20)
(A 16-17-year-old HENRY THOMAS co-stars! A FINE performance by a
TERRIFIC young actor! *Visual bonuses* here too!)
GREAT MOVIE ALERT!
3:15 p.m. Showtime "MY LIFE AS A DOG" (1:45)
(This is a TERRIFIC, TERRIFIC movie!!!! This Swedish film won MULTIPLE
awards all over the world
[http://us.imdb.com/Tawards?Mitt+liv+som+hund+(1985)] [Yes, the
"1985" with the parentheses around it *IS* part of the URL]. The
young star of the film, ANTON GLANZELIUS, won some of those awards,
and IMHO they were well deserved. I give this movie a VERY VERY HIGH
RECOMMENDATION!!!)
4:00 p.m. Comedy Central "I LOVE YOU TO DEATH" (2:00)
(Strange comedy. But what makes this interesting is a rare comedic
role for RIVER PHOENIX!! If you haven't seen this before, do so!)
5:00 p.m. A&E "BIOGRAPHY" (1:00)
(This is a very very well done series. Tonight's episode takes a look
at the career of actor KURT RUSSELL. Kurt is one of those relatively
rare child/teen actors that was able to continue acting as an adult.
But who can forget his, ummmm, MEMORABLE "appearance" on "Gilligan's
Island"??? I know I sure won't!)
HELP!
7:00 p.m. AMC "COUNTDOWN" (1:50)
(According to TV Guide, this is a 1968 TV Movie. They describe it as
follows: "Feature version of 'Lassie' episodes." They also state that
this airing will be in Letter-Box format. Anyway, I can't find ANY
information about this! There IS a 1968 film called "Countdown" at
IMDb, but it's a theatrical movie and is about astronauts, not Lassie!
Can anyone shed some light on this for us, PLEASE??!!)
ALERT!!
7:00 p.m. Disney Channel "FLASH" (1:30)
(EXCELLENT Disney TV Movie about a boy and a horse. GREAT casting here,
evidenced by the 2 stars, LUCAS BLACK and SHAWN TOOVEY!)
8:00 p.m. Fox Family Channel "MEN DON'T LEAVE" (2:00)
(Well, in this movie the man DOES leave; well, actually he dies. This
leaves mom with 2 sons to raise, played by CHRIS O'DONNELL and CHARLIE
KORSMO. Other young actors in the cast include COREY CARRIER and
perhaps others. I've owned this movie on pre-recorded video for about 8
years, but have never watched it. <hanging head low in shame> I do
hear this is a very good film)
8:00 p.m. HBO "DEAD POETS SOCIETY" (2:10)
(See 11:30 a.m. above)
9:00 p.m. A&E "BIOGRAPHY" (1:00)
(See 5:00 p.m. above)
10:00 p.m. NBC "LAW & ORDER" (1:00)
(This repeat episode deals with the death of a boy. I don't know if
this is one of those episodes with other boys being investigated, or if
it involves an adult killer. If you have nothing better to do tonight,
check this one out [and then let us all know] )
10:15 p.m. Disney Channel "FLASH" (1:30)
(See 7:00 p.m. above)
11:00 p.m. PAX TV "IT'S A MIRACLE" (1:00)
(TV Guide's description: "A teen rescues his brother from a fire.")
ALERT??
11:05 p.m. TBS "BAD MOON" (1:35)
(Well, now that MASON GAMBLE totally captivated me with his fabulous
performances this past year, now I'll sit up and pay more attention to
some of his earlier work [though I still doubt I'll ever watch his
"Dennis the Menace" movie]. This 1996 film is about a photojournalist
who is bitten by a werewolf. Mason is named in the main listing in TV
Guide, so I'd guess he's important to this film. I'll be watching!)
That's it! I sure hope you can even SEE this Report.
PLEASE PLEASE answer my very important questions above, if you know the
answers! Please also add your VERY important and necessary comments,
opinions, etc.
Happy Viewing!

I saw this on TV a few years ago. Disney did a lot of experiments

"Song of the South".

Yes there is some animation mixed in (although not much) and it's overlaid on
the live action in the same way as Pete's Dragon and Mary Poppins (although
it's probably better done). It's a very good film and well worth seeing - I
have it on pre-recorded video...

And I thought you didn't like gory movies :)
Mason has a fairly significant role. It's just a pity that the script's so
bad :(

It's a gory movie?? Having never seen it, I had no way of knowing
that. At least being that it's on regular basic cable, they won't
show the level of gore they'd show on premium cable. I'll still tape
it to see it. And thanks for the warning. :)

Funny, one set of "Re"s say one date.
Another set of Deja news "Re"s say another.
Still no original message for Wednesday in either Likem's posts-----or my
Repost of his daily report nowhere to be found.
And mine was posted directly from AOL Usenet.
Looks like all of the folks on AOL Usenet have to do without any knowledge for
what is playing according to Likem's reports.
I got it off Supernews when reposting it but not many others have that access.
Of course, I dont see anyone here complaining as not having received Likem's
posts. Guess Marcus' theory about the lack of people here is more correct
than we realize. I think there may be 3 perhaps 4 people actually come here
regularly. With a few strays every now & then. Hardly what we could term an
active newsgroup.
There's more than that. Here's a short list:
Likem
Captain Cook
Mark L.
Marcus
You (RTJoby)
Maddog
Blind Hog
Philo D.
Christopher
That's 9 right there who post regularly. I (who reads every day but
doesn't post all too frequently) make 10. I'm sure there are more.

Not necessarily. If they're not seeing our posts here, it's very
possible that WE are not seeing theirs. So they may very well be
complaining about not seeing my reports and the follow-ups, but we
can't see those complaints. <sigh>

TV Guide usually indicates if a movie is subtitled, and this listing
doesn't say so. But that's not an absolute, either. So it could be
either. ;-)

Hmmm. Well, after reading what you said, I went to AMC's website.
They have a description of the astronaut film by that name, but they
say there are no airings scheduled. They list other films by the name
"Countdown," including the one being shown at this time, but there is
no further information about the film. I guess we'll have to have a
look-see. (There is another airing scheduled late Wednesday
night/Thursday morning at 12:30 a.m.)

Marcus can correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't interpret his "theory" that
way. I didn't think he was talking about lack of people posting, but
problems with Usenet feeds. I went back and re-read his original "Okay, that
tears it" message and nowhere does he say that we have a lack of people in
the newsgroup. Rather, we have a lack of reliable news servers so that we
can count on seeing everyone's posts. The two issues are different.
CC
>Funny, one set of "Re"s say one date.

I believe that was a human error. ;-) Likem posted two Wednesday
reports, one with 1/12 as the correct date, and another one which sent
Philo running for his calendar. j/k

I do hope and think you're wrong about that. Going back through 2
weeks of saved messages, I can find over 40 posters whose names I
recognize as regulars. Also, I think the group has a large number of
lurkers who never post. Being a lurker in a few other groups, I can
understand how that happens. I bet there are a good number of readers
who feel like they know us, but we don't know them. Hi guys! :)

Me! Me! I read everything here, everyday... I just don't always have any
opinions worth expressing via a post or reply, or when I do, someone beats
me to it. If I don't have anything new to add to a discussion, I don't
really see the point in simply agreeing or re-stating what someone else has
said.
By the way, Newscene appears to getting all the posts; Likem's reports are
all coming through, and I'm not seeing replies to any "phantom" posts.
-=*NomaD*=-

This sounds like an excellent idea to me, and might be a good solution that
we can all live with. Assuming Likem agrees, how about if we reserve the
mailing list for carbon copies of his TV reports, and other particularly
urgent or time-sensitive postings? Reserve opinions, discussions, less
urgent news, etc. for the newsgroup, and either hope for the best or rely on
sites such as Deja or Remarq for lost posts. But for postings that point out
upcoming shows that are, say, airing the next day, and haven't been pointed
out in Likem's report, carbon copy the post to the mailing list and the
newsgroup both.
This way Likem (and others such as Mark who post supplements) can be assured
that at least the core people in this newsgroup will see his reports, but at
the same time our mailboxes won't be full of a zillion other duplicate
messages that we will likely see in the newsgroup anyway.
Whaddya say, Likem? If anyone else would like to scratch or amend the
suggestion, please speak up.
CC
40 regulars???
That sounds like an exageration.
Post all of their names and I might agree.
This newsgroup used to be full of talkative posts/posters. Mark being a
longtime regular (& others here too) should know how thriving it once was as
compared to the way it is now.
Now it is just basically the same few 10 or so visitors someone mentioned
before.
Fact is you can go to a newsgroup on one particular TV show, or of Hanson, of
the Moffatts, of PEANUTS the comic strip----& find way more posters in those
newsgroups than you can in this one.
And this newsgroup used to have a lot of post-ers.
Some dont see the drop off because they are here nearly every day. So it looks
the same to them as it did yesterday or the day before. But I can recall a
time lots of people would come & post here. Way more people than have been
doing so for the past several months now.
As I said before, others have noticed & sent me emails. (one posted below)
So as you can see, others have noticed the drop as well.
Maybe it will pick up. We will see.

Okay, but remember these are only names of people who have posted in
the past two weeks. Some have been regulars for 4 years or more,
others are more recent, but I recognize everyone here. I'm sure there
are many others who are just as much "regulars" and for one reason or
another, didn't have a post on my newsreader during that time.
Anyway, here are 41 regulars:

We've had good and bad times, RT, and sometimes both at the same time.
1995 and 1996 will always be special for me because it was so cool to
realize that a group like this even existed in the world. I think the
group hit a rough spot after that as some of the original regulars*
drifted away, some turning to places like IRC. There seemed to be a
lot more flame wars and questionable posts for a while. In the past
couple of years, afti has come very much back to life and I really
like things the way they are (especially when the messages are
propagating right).
>Fact is you can go to a newsgroup on one particular TV show, or of Hanson, of

No offense to anyone on those groups, but I don't read very many of
those anymore. There are way too many posts, flame wars, and lengthy
threads from regulars who really should be sending e-mails to each
other instead. Most of the people here know how a newsgroup should
work and have something interesting to say when they post.
Hey, it is not perfect, but I like it the way things are now on
afti...thanks to everyone in the above list and everyone else whose
name is missing but helps make this a good group.

II'll take that challenge.
This is a short list of those that have been posting here as long or
longer than me.

Now having said that If my memory serves me right Mike Larson was here
early on, but I do not remember him. But I do remember him being
greeted by several long timers when he returned after a long absence.
The ones that were here long before me:

I have subscribed to this newsgroup from the very first day that I have been
online. At that time there was some kind of war going on here that turned me
off and kept me from posting, but I would check in on occasion to see what was
going on. After a while though things calmed down and especially after Likem
started to do his daily reports (THANK YOU LIKEM - WE CAN'T SAY IT ENOUGH) this
group became the most functional, well behaved and generally SPAM-less groups I
have ever read. I subscribed for a time to the Hanson group, and found it (for
the most part) to be silly, off topic, and due to the hundreds of mindless
posts a day, exhausting to read.
Yes, there are days when hardly anyone posts here. Yes, we get a sprinkling of
Spam occasionally. Yes, sometimes there are heated disagreements (I love
those!) Yes, there are times when my brilliant (ahem) posts generate no
response at all. And yes, there are occasional lapses in taste. BUT MOSTLY
NOT.
I read this group every day, without fail, even if I am away from home. I post
or respond if I have something to say and if I don't I remain quiet. ( I hate
groups that have 300 replies of "me too" for every topic.) Sometimes my life is
exhausting and I don't have the energy to post, but I always read this group..
DEAD? This group is far from dead. It may be taking a little rest right now,
but it will bounce back, Just wait and see.

I agree! I've been hanging around this group (as well as its binary cousin) for
more than three years now. When Likem started his listings, the group seemed to
become very friendly and family-like - without hundreds of posts to sort through. I
really enjoy this group - and I've learned so much about a subject I used to think I
was an expert on!

I never really went anywhere... just found myself immersed in work &
family life and had little time for the net for about a year. Before
that happened I did the original daily AFTI Movies On TV listings. I
fully understand the difficulty that Likem & others have creating
daily or weekly lists of shows & movies. Thank you for all your hard
work and for taking over where I left off.
Hate to admit it, but I don't remember exactly how long I've been on
here. I was on Prodigy before they had full internet access. Prodigy
started with internet newsgroups a while later. Maybe Hepcat can help
me out with the year... he's been around here that long too. I went
to California in August '95 to meet with some of the old gang. I
think I was online for two or three years before that happened.

I saw Matt in IRC until around the middle of last year. He was one of

Little newsflash for you... Mike Larson & BoardCrazy are the same
person. I switched to BoardCrazy on AOL, then to Netcom when AOL
slowed way down. Had 5 or 6 different net accounts since then, but
have tried to stay with MikeLars or MikeL with all of them.
I can't count the number of "regulars" who have come and gone since I
first started reading & posting here in AFTI. I'm sure that I have
forgotten at least as many as I remember. A lot of the original gang
is still on the net, but they choose not to post because of the
arguments & flaming mentioned in earlier posts.
If any of the old crew is still hanging around and would like to
contact me, feel free to do so. I'm a little quicker at answering
email since the family and I parted ways. It would be great to hear
how everybody is surviving these days.

Which were always a treat to read, just as Likem's and all the
discussion revolving around his terrific listings are such good
reading now.
Here are a few more names to remember from the past 2 months (my
desktop stores messages for a longer time)...
Alasdair, comickid23, daytonaK, DonD, D Watson, Hades62780, merrick12,
oscargold, Pmouse, planetpremiere, Projekt13, Roby, Starduster, and
TrashBoy.
This has been a nice chance to stop and think about all the people who
have made this group such a good one for years. It's great that so
many of the long-timers are still around.

According to deja.com, mine is April 18, 1996. The people I remember
most from when I started reading/posting were JD Ahmanson, John L.
Kelleher, John aka Deliveryboy, Marcus, and Mark "the ratings guy".
Yes, I was going to mention him. I remember him and Ryan used to post
quite a bit.
I stopped reading this newsgroup for a while, and when I came back, some
of the regulars were gone (ie. JD Ahmanson). Then there was a period
where I read off and on, because there was a lot of garbage and junk
that I really wasn't interested in. Then shortly after Likem started
posting, things started getting good again, so I've been reading
regularly ever since.

This group and alt.tv.3rd-rock are the only newsgroups I read, and I
enjoy both of them pretty much.
> Hey, it is not perfect, but I like it the way things are now on

I agree with Mark, I think this newsgroup is in pretty good shape. I
would rather have a smaller group of people who are friendly and
familiar than a larger group where things get off-track, people fight,
and it's hard to keep track of everything. Hopefully you guys can get
your news server problems straightened out, and we'll be back in
business.
I guess I should stop just lurking in this thread and throw in some
comments of my own. :-)
First off, I think the lists posted recently of "regular"
contributors, starting with the 41 names from just the last 2 weeks
provided by Mark, proves that this group is FAR from dead,
participant-wise. I was relieved, even delighted, really, to see all
those names!
Second, I think that it's now obvious that there were indeed news
server problems recently, which severely cut into the number of posts
we were receiving. And now that they are apparently solved, I for one
have started seeing "up to" 15-50 "new headers" in AFTI each time I
check.
As regards some of the "old-timers" here, I have 2 FYIs: (1) KF tells
me that he reads this group regularly, though, obviously, he doesn't
post much. Hi, KF!!; (2) Alasdair reads it too, but not as often as
he used to.
My AFTI history is a bit different from most of yours. I first got
onto the real internet in the summer of 1995. Alasdair was one of the
very first friends I made chatting on IRC (efnet). When we discovered
our mutual admiration for young performers, Alasdair told me about an
IRC channel called #AFTI-Cafe.
I was very excited about the idea of discussing my favorite subject
every night on IRC, but #AFTI-Cafe really turned out to be a disaster
for me. I started chatting there in roughly August or September of
1995, and stopped going there in roughly October of 1995.
Why did I stop? Well, I ran into a couple of horribly rude and
arrogant chatters there, in amongst a few good people like KF and
LonoMyth, who made it impossible for me to be there. At various
points during the chats, I tried to bring up certain TEEN actors,
something I wouldn't have thought would be a problem in a chat channel
called "alt fan *TEEN* idols - cafe." For trying to chat about TEEN
actors, I was trashed and verbally assaulted. It seemed that certain
leading people in that channel refused to allow discussion about any
actor who had so much as begun to enter puberty.
It took me awhile to realize I was banging my head against an
immovable wall. And unfortunately, when I did realize it and stopped
going to #AFTI-Cafe, the damage had already been done. I lost
interest. I stopped going to the Youth In Film Awards show, which I
had attended all but 2 years since 1982. I stopped watching/taping
many shows, looking at the magazines, etc., and lost touch with the
names and faces of many young performers of the day. (No, the
terrible times I had on #AFTI-Cafe weren't the sole cause of all that,
but they were certainly a contributing factor.)
I don't really remember what it was that brought me to this newsgroup,
AFTI, in early 1998. I started reading, and then jumped in with my
first post in April 1998, when there was an interesting thread called
"What makes a teen idol?"
Then, as I read the group over the next few months, and contributed
some posts, I began to get discouraged. I realized I was sorely
lacking knowledge about the then-current crop of young actors who were
being discussed (and frankly, I'm still working to catch up); and (2)
there were TERRIBLE flame-wars going on here, and the group seemed to
be little more than a forum for personal attacks against one another.
I started doing my TV Reports for a few specific reasons. First, I
used to do something similar to them anyway, for a friend, by
telephone. (I had been marking up my TV Guide in preparation for my
own taping and/or watching shows and movies for many years, so why not
share the info?) Further, I was aware that such posts might help
bring the group back "on-topic," which I'm proud to say has been
accomplished. And finally, by committing myself to doing the reports,
looking up films/shows with which I wasn't familiar, looking up names
and birthdates at IMDb, and checking for pictures of them at Star
Galaxy, StarOasis, etc., I was re-educating myself on the current
young performers about whom I realized I knew way too little. (An
example: I think I could actually recognize Keegan McIntosh by sight,
now!)
So in some ways my AFTI history goes back to late summer 1995, with a
gap from Fall 1995 to Spring 1998.
Part of what has made this newsgroup so terrific for me has been the
very way it contrasts with my experience in #AFTI-Cafe. Here, we
discuss young performers of different races, sizes, and a wide variety
of ages. I don't know of anyone here who puts someone down for
discussing a fine performance by and a cute face on a 5-year-old
actor, for example; the same can be said with regards an older teen
actor or even early-20s actor ("older playing younger"), or a fat
actor, etc. I'm sure everyone's interests vary greatly, yet most
everyone is truly respectful of those which differ from their own.
I sincerely hope the regulars here continue BEING regular, even
when/if news server problems temporarily put a crimp in the whole
apparatus. I similarly hope that our ranks will swell, and there will
be new folks who join in and contribute their knowledge, thoughts,
opinions, etc.
Okay, my friends, I've said enough, now. I have to go, as it's time
to do a TV Report. :-)
Likem
> I guess I should stop just lurking in this thread and throw in some
> comments of my own. :-)
I really don't have a lot to add about AFTI, but since we're taking a stroll
down amnesia lane, I might as well throw in my own history.
I didn't actually come onto the Internet-proper until January 1996, but in
the summer of '95 a local BBS (remember those?) started providing IRC access.
I remember for several months I had to type each IRC command manually since
I had to log on under a DOS interface. :)
In Fall '95 I met Likem on IRC (Effnet) though if I recall correctly, he and
I have both changed screen names a few times since then. Shortly after I got
full Internet access in Jan. '96 I was able to access IRC in Windows 3.1 and
IRC got a lot easier. I made numerous good friends there over the next year
or two and it was a joy to discover so many others who share my interest in
young actors. I first accessed AFTI sometime during 1996. I don't think I
ever posted, nor do I recall the names of anyone else who was here.
Sometime in 1997 I stopped going to IRC mainly because my friends stopped
showing up and all the "channel politics" made it difficult to make new ones.
The onset of ICQ also made IRC a little less appealing.
Unfortunately I have now completely lost contact with all my IRC friends and
/me can only wonder what has happened to them. That is, all except Likem,
who in the Fall of 1998 encouraged me to come back to the newsgroup and start
contributing. I believe I lurked for a month or so before I started posting,
and at first posted under a different name. My first AFTI post as "Captain
Cook" was on 1/18/99.
If anyone is wondering ... the name "Captain Cook" is inspired mainly by the
line in Dead Poets Society where the Robin Williams character quotes the line
from the poem by Walt Whitman, "O Captain, my Captain." (Incidentally, that
sound clip plays frequently on my computer, too <g>).
I've always had a fondness for wav files, in case anyone hasn't noticed, so I
began to look for ways to share my collection with others who are interested
in them. Soon the idea for the "challenge posts" came to mind and the first
one was posted on 2/10/99. And as the cliche goes, the rest is history.
As for AFTI, it has become a very regular part of my daily life. I have
immensely enjoyed interacting with numerous people here, and I have felt very
welcome from the first moment I came. Everyone here is just great! I have
gotten so many positive e-mails and I don't recall anyone ever saying an
unkind word to me. I share the same sentiment with others that the size and
tone of the group is great as it currently stands.
This group gives me an outlet for a personal interest that I share with no
one else in "real life." I thought I knew a lot about our subject until I
came here! You guys continually amaze me with your knowledge! Keep it
coming!
> Okay, my friends, I've said enough, now. I have to go, as it's time
> to do a TV Report. :-)
I think I've said enough now too, and it's time to get back to work on my
next challenge post. :-)
CC
I was surprised (and flattered) to see myself listed as a "regular", basically
because I feel I don't contribute as much as I should (even though I lurk pretty
much daily). I've been thinking over the past few days about why I don't post
more and I guess it boils down to the following factors:
1. I haven't checked deja to confirm this (I'm sure some bored soul probably
will), but I think the frequency of my posts declined a few months ago when I
discovered that the reason for my interest in this group is (allegedly) not the
same reason most of the other regulars are here. I have to admit I was greatly
disappointed and disillusioned by the disingenuousness that was exhibited in
numerous defensive messages that were posted a few months ago concerning the
"motivation" for this group. (Sorry for the alliteration in that sentence; it
really was unintentional.)
2. Due to number 1, I now have much less self-confidence to post my thoughts
(i.e., "why would anyone be interested in what I have to say?").
Not to worry, though. I think I'm getting over it!

I came online at AOL in Oct., 1995. Two months later my sister
mentioned this new fangled thing called 'Netscape' and the rest is
history. I discovered Star Galaxy around mid December that year and
discovered newsgroups shortly there after. My first post was about the

Yep. I had him on my mind, but failed to remember him. He and JD had
some rather lively discussions about Elijah Wood and Brad Renfro(If I
remember correctly).
One name that pops in my head and nobody has mentioned and maybe we
would all like to forget is.............Cedric.
He single handly was probably responsible for "making" as large number
of contributors leave during his stay here as anyone. Well, except for
the guy who had a craw in his butt about Paul Peterson and A Minor
Consideration. But those time periods coincided and many "regs" left
at that time.
And anyone who was familar with Cedric also knows he played a large
part in destroying the group abp.boys also.
I do believe Cedric is no longer on the Net.
Like several others have said. This is one of the few non-moderated
groups that has no flame wars and a very low amount of SPAM, which is
usually ignored. For that I am thankful.

Indeed. In this group, no one has ever put me down for liking anyone.
Funny thing I just remembered, I once posted a message requesting
information on "what's the deal with Devon Sawa, why do so many of you
guys like him?" I meant it as a smart alecky way as saying I don't
like him. But no, everyone had to be nice and explain why they like
him. Took all the dang fun out of it for me. <G>
Now Roby mentioned abpti. I did get some rather nasty comments about
posting images of Johnny Sheffield, than later a different guy
questioned me on 'what is an Adam LaVorgna?" Yeah I know, I thought
the guy was insane also. These "age-related" comments do tend to pop
up every now and then.
I was also asked in my long since deleted Guestbook why I would post
images of Alex Vincent(the word sicko was used). Well, all I can say
is Alex contacted me and thanked me. That makes me think it is worth
the hassle that I could be opened up to. But it seems that most TI
sites are left alone. I can't think of any email I ever got that was a
flame. Actiually I get more complaints about who I do not have than
who I do have. You would think 350+ actors would satisfy everyone.
Likem, just so you will know, when I read Philo's out on video posts,
I do not recognize many of the names. :-)

I used to feel the same way about Devon. "What the heck does he do,
anyway, except show up in a zillion teenmags every month?" I remember
your thread on afti, and the answers did a good job in convincing me
to give him another chance. So did a little movie called "Night of
the Twisters."
Some of my posts used to be a little more negative at times, taking a
"winners and losers" approach to reviewing afti movies and TV. But it
was a post from Daytona K that convinced me to always try to be more
positive towards the young stars who try their best to entertain us.
Funny, you think your words disappear as quickly as they age off the
newsgroup servers. But some of the thoughts in this group have made a
difference for years and years.

What was so unfortunate and ultimately defeating was that these people
who harrassed me out of the IRC channel were among the leaders,
founders, channel operators, chief picture traders of #AFTI-Cafe. I
wouldn't have worried about irregulars had they been doing such things
to me. (I'll still never forget what one particular ChanOp--the
memory of whose nickname will forever bring revulsion in my
brain--said to me when I challenged his assertion that discussion of
pubescent or teen actors was not okay. He said, "You pathetic piece
of sh*t," and he said it without the * in it. Now, I'm not so
thin-skinned that one moronic insult would drive me away; it was a
long pattern of it, night-after-night, week-after-week, and finally I
realized I didn't have to stay there and take it.)

Cedric has linked into an entirely different ether net. According to postings
by his brother, he passed away last summer.
As an example, you've seen me posting in several threads for the past few days
because I get to indulge in some fun time now. All the crazies of Christmas and
Year End and Y2K have passed, and work has settled down to a more workable pace.
I enjoy writing and this is a good place to mix thoughts. Not only are the
people considerate of other opinions, but debate is reasoned. I haven't seen a
"F**k you!" here in weeks and never by anyone who counts.
The neat part is that I don't have to be an AFTI maniac to contribute. If I see

The posts I remembered most from you were about Colton James'
appearance as Ash on the Norm show. You gave us the links to the
website where you could download a RealVideo file of his scene. Now
I've been able to save that scene on my hard drive. That was great!
The AOL feed is finally catching up with the rest of Usenet this
weekend. I noticed a lot of 3 day old posts along with the newer
stuff. Not very effective for TV Reports, but still good for
discussions.

Whoa! Not only have I not seen that in weeks, I don't think I've EVER seen that
sentiment expressed in this group. As others have observed, what's most impressive
about this group is the harmony that exists, given our diverse and varied tastes. I
would be greatly saddened to see someone in this group resort to such depths to
express their disagreement.

I think some people left because of a lot of fights happening. But usually
they were the ones starting the fights so it didnt really matter that they
left.
I also have seen that this past week or so, posts have picked up in a high
volume that has not been seen in quite a while.
Some were due to AOLs posting posts 2 to 3 days late for whatever reason last
week.
But I am also seeing some new names that have not been seen before.
As someone mentioned before---it is getting a little difficult to keep up with
as compared to the smaller volume as before.
Now, theres way too many posts for me to even read them all.
But at least there's interest here.

Anyway, this was my second choice because it discusses IRC. Although
the oldest post I can find from myself to this newsgroup is Feb '96, I
imagine anyone who knows me knows me from the old IRC afti channels.
I rarely posted to usenet. Anything from the past was on other accounts
so don't try to remember wsmith from mbay.

: I was very excited about the idea of discussing my favorite subject
: every night on IRC, but #AFTI-Cafe really turned out to be a disaster
: for me. I started chatting there in roughly August or September of
: 1995, and stopped going there in roughly October of 1995.
If you could have made it by early '95 you would have had a better
experience. Brief history: The first channel was #AFTI. It was
originally to be a weekend chat channel for regulars of this newsgroup.
Although there was some fighting even from that first weekend, the
weekend was considered a big success. Everyone had a blast. I
missed it.
The second weekend came along and I decided to use IRC for the first
time ever, specifically to join #AFTI. That weekend was one of the most
fun weekends I've had. Definitely the best weekend ever on the internet.
I think it was Saturday night of that weekend that I stayed up til dawn
talking with 3 people I'd just met. At least one of them still posts
here, and we recently saw the South Park movie when he was in this part
of the country on business. <little hint to him who I am if he's reading>
The weekends only schedule for #AFTI was history with that second weekend.
Seven days a week I could join a text party and chat with some great
people. I thought there was no way it would ever end. But things began
to change. People who had no interest in this newsgroup heard about
"the new channel" where "they aren't even set secret". These were
people who had been on IRC for some time. The #AFTI channel began to
add a lot of new regulars. And of course the discussions began to
change.
To be brief, one afternoon a friend messaged me and told me to join
#AFTI-CAFE. I joined and there were many of my #AFTI friends. The
first attempt to recapture what we had in the beginning had begun.
We had run off to a new channel. Of course its existence quickly
became known, and it was invaded. Thus began the war that eventually
killed the existence of any IRC channel related to this newsgroup.
By the time #AFTI-CAFE died in early '96, #AFTI was dead, and anyone
who spent the last few months in the cafe were people who had finally
realized there wasn't any way to keep some things out of the channel.
Many of the true a.f.t.i people had splintered off into many small
groups of friends. The big party was gone for good. I had been
spending most of my time in a small channel with a few close
friends, but missing all the news and discussion and recommendations
I'd become so addicted to in early #AFTI. I heard a lot of music,
read a lot of books, and saw a lot of movies as a result of my time
in #AFTI. One night after my friends had gone to bed, in boredom
and depression, I joined the cafe to see if any of my old friends
were there. The channel was dead. I still don't know if the last
people formally decided to call it quits, or if finally nobody came
anymore.
: Why did I stop? Well, I ran into a couple of horribly rude and
: arrogant chatters there,
A couple? Must have been a good night. :)
[snip]
It seemed that certain
: leading people in that channel refused to allow discussion about any
: actor who had so much as begun to enter puberty.
I hope you realize now that you weren't talking to anyone from this
newsgroup.
: It took me awhile to realize I was banging my head against an
: immovable wall.
You and a lot of other people.
And unfortunately, when I did realize it and stopped
: going to #AFTI-Cafe, the damage had already been done. I lost
: interest. I stopped going to the Youth In Film Awards show, which I
: had attended all but 2 years since 1982. I stopped watching/taping
: many shows, looking at the magazines, etc., and lost touch with the
: names and faces of many young performers of the day. (No, the
: terrible times I had on #AFTI-Cafe weren't the sole cause of all that,
: but they were certainly a contributing factor.)
That happened to me too. I wasn't as involved as you, but I had
enjoyed the discussions and one day found I wasn't really that
interested in them anymore. Thats part of why I haven't read this
newsgroup much over the past few years. The effect was somewhat
permanent. You're the first person I've heard of having anything
similar happen.
[snip]
: Then, as I read the group over the next few months, and contributed
: some posts, I began to get discouraged. I realized I was sorely
: lacking knowledge about the then-current crop of young actors who were
: being discussed (and frankly, I'm still working to catch up); and (2)
The other day someone mentioned Michael James Wixted. My reaction:
"Oh wow! I remember him!" Ask me about people from those days and I
can compete. Nowadays? I know fewer than 10% of the actors discussed
here. I didn't do Lono's poll. Wasn't sure I could even list 5 from
this year. :) <When I really examined the list later, I found that
yeah I had seen more than 5 of the movies. I'm not dead...yet.>
: there were TERRIBLE flame-wars going on here, and the group seemed to
: be little more than a forum for personal attacks against one another.
If I glanced in and saw that, I was gone again at the push of a button.
[snip]
: So in some ways my AFTI history goes back to late summer 1995, with a
: gap from Fall 1995 to Spring 1998.
So when did the #AFTI channel actually begin? Does anyone know for
sure? I don't know how long I'd read here before that.
[snip]
: Okay, my friends, I've said enough, now. I have to go, as it's time
: to do a TV Report. :-)
More often than not, when I do read here its to see whats on TV
that might be interesting. I have two news servers and neither ever
has a problem getting your TV Report. Yeah one is supernews, but the
other is just one run by my ISP <different account>. So propogation
can't be too bad. Anyway, I do appreciate your work going through
TV listings and compiling reports for us.
Well, lemme see what else I find that I thought about responding to.

A big part of that database was in my head. Creating the daily movie
listings allowed me to memorize more data in a few years than I was
ever able to learn in many years of school. Lonomyth was also able to
spew out actors' names and related roles with ease.
Giving more credit where credit is due, I did have a lengthy database
that was based on a file created by Joe Power. He must have spent
literally years converting his vast knowledge & experience into a
computer-based format. Joe dcc'd that file to me in the early days
and I used it daily to create my lists... finding obscure info on
actors & movies that I had not seen and adding my own info on shows
that aired after its creation. I haven't done much with that file in
2 or 3 years.

I remember those first two weekends too. For the first, I was in IRC
for 36 straight hours. One other person managed to stay alive longer
than I did. The second weekend didn't last as long for me, but people
were still dropping in through the wee hours and still going when I
left (passed out would probably better describe it).

At that time, I didn't see a reason for secret & private or keys &
passwords. I was of the opinion that people who used those switches
had something to hide, and that wasn't me. Everybody knew my real
name and why I was there.

Again we used a public channel. We tried moderation & limited ops,
but with the frequency of splits at that time any amateur hacker could
take over a channel with ease and ban us like we tried to do to them.

We made attempts to start more secure channels like #AFTI-OLDIES and
such, but if somone joined IRC with a different nick for anonymity,
they didn't get the invite to join. In our attempt to limit the
antiproductive riff-raff, we also lost the necessary participation of
our welcome friends and harmless parttime lurkers. Receiving a
private message & request for invite from a nick you didn't recognize
was like getting a collect phone call from a long lost relative... if
you let them in, you took the chance of losing control of your channel
again. These are just some of the problems that led to the demise of
our time in IRC.
To this day, some of the "elders" still chat in IRC. Most of it is
limited to private messaging. We rarely even bother to start a
channel.

That does depend on who you considered to be the "leading people". I
know that refusal didn't come from myself or Daytonak, Jody, Lonomyth,
JK, or the many others who were not the "leading people", but were the
originators and positive driving force of both the AFTI newsgroup and
IRC channels. We spoke of River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves & Will Estes as
much as we did Alex Linz, Mason Gamble & Will Nipper. The true
"leading people" discussed the talents of or relived our childhoods
with those actors without regard to their age or progression along the
pube scale. We would just as easily talk about Kurt Russell in
"Overboard" as we would Kurt in "Gilligan's Island".
I wish everyone reading this had the chance to see what #AFTI &
#AFTI-CAFE were in their original form before the influx of
degenerates that eventually killed them.
It is good to hear that a lot of the old crew is still around. It's
also good to see that AFTI has come full circle and is regaining the
popularity & integrity that it once had years ago. We can now see
that it doesn't require constant nagging of FAQ keepers to keep things
going in the right direction... just the realization that this
newsgroup belongs to its readers and that we are here to discuss and
pay tribute to the TIs that entertain us now and in the past. We're
here because we have that in common and not to dwell on our
differences.
Bored yet? Yeah, me too. :-) Back to the TIs...

Yeah, I had heard good things about the beginnings on #AFTI, though I

There was one such person in particular, and one or two others who

Well, they were from this newsgroup, as I understand it, though I
didn't read the newsgroup back then. The old-timers I've talked to
all know who the person/people were, and I always assumed that they
knew each other from here in the ng. My antagonists did in fact have

It's too bad that Dalnet wasn't well known at that point. In the
Dalnet IRC you can register a channel, i.e. "own" it, and you can
register your nickname(s) too. Channel takeovers, so common on Efnet
back in '95, just didn't happen (and still don't) on Dalnet. You can
set up ops at different levels, you can have certain people
permanently banned (auto-kicked) from the channel, etc.

You're right, though. I never had problems with daytonak, Lono, or

As I mentioned in another thread, my biggest concern is to not do
anything to hurt this newsgroup. How can we accomplish that?
I don't know how I'd post to the list, other than copying and pasting
the Report into an e-mail to the list, similarly to what I do when I
double-post through Deja.
Has there been any response, people joining, etc?
Please let me know.
Likem
My suggestion was that we start using the mailing list ONLY for such posts
that are very time-sensitive and NOT as a forum for replies and discussion.
The time-sensitive posts would be sent to the newsgroup and the mailing list
at the same time.
If you sent your TV report to the mailing list in addition to the newsgroup,
you'd have far more assurance that it wouldn't go unseen. The mailing list
would serve as sort of a safety net just in case the post doesn't make it to
the news servers in time. Those of us who are on the mailing list would have
to understand that replies to the TV reports and other time-sensitive posts
should be done only in the newsgroup and never to the mailing list.
My newsreader allows me to send a post to an e-mail address in addition to a
newsgroup, all in one step, so I think it likely that yours does too. You
shouldn't have to copy and paste it into a new mailing, but just add the
mailing list address to the post.
The mailing list has already served a significant purpose for me. Lastnight
Brad sent the notice about Frankie Munz's appearance on Comedy Central to the
mailing list as well as the newsgroup. I saw the e-mail long before I saw
the newsgroup post, and as a result, I saw the show. Without the mailing
list I definitely would have missed it (and I gather that you ALMOST missed
it too).
Thanks to posts such as your TV reports, Mark's supplements, and other alerts
on upcoming shows, this newsgroup has become a "service" besides being a
forum for discussion and opinions. I think this idea would be a valuable
boost to the "service" part of the newsgroup if everyone followed it. And
the "discussion" part of the newsgroup shouldn't suffer at all. But with
Marcus's agreement I think this should be a group decision, not mine.

I can do that too, but I don't know if I can just do it for certain
posts. I know I can set my newsreader to send a copy by e-mail to
each post, and can set it to do that in only those newsgroups I
choose. How would I do it for some posts to a newsgroup, and not
other posts to the same group?

From the header it looks like he is using Agent. With the version I
use (1.6) when the post new message button is pushed there are 4

1. newsgroups
2. subject

Filling in the email box will send an email as well as post the
