Hi,
I just read the TV guide story on Home Improvement’s Finale.
It says that Jonathan Taylor Thomas is not returning to the
show’s last final hour/&half episode because of some
differences he has with the cast. It does not mention any
differences about Zach Ty Bryan---but does mention a
comment he did not like by Tim Allen---which was something
to the effect that Tim did not understand why JTT left the series
& could not film it’s last year when JTT said he was leaving to
attend school---but instead has filmed movies. Which by the
way---I had the same question long before I heard Tim Allen
wondering about it. Firstly, the name “JTT” would not even
exist if it were not for the Home Improvement TV series.
It is that recognition that got him discovered & recognized all
over the world. Secondly, not returning to the show that
made him the star he is for it’s last show’s finale is like
saying, “I’m too good for you now---but you can go ahead
& use all of the clips you want of me. Maybe that will help
boost my career more.” Almost seems like they should
have cut him all out of the clips---but then that would show
bad feelings on Home Improvement’s part. So instead,
Home Imp will show more valuable clips of JTT that will
enhance him even more---when he clearly does not even seem
to deserve the fame he has---just from his swelled up attitude.
Thirdly, I think Patricia Richardson explained it best that she
did not think he has been given the best advice.
Disney/Touchstone owns both ABC & Home Improvement
---the same company that makes all of JTT’s movies(Huck Finn,
Lion King, Man Of The House, etc.)---so didn’t it even occur
to him---or the person giving him his career advice---(hopefully
not his mother)---that if he refuses to do the Finale & it is
considered a slap in the face---that maybe Disney just might
not think the same anymore of his deserving fame & may
consider their face slapped as well.
Fourtly, hasn’t JTT ever heard of forgiveness. Jumping into the
fire & facing any harsh feelings that might exist between & his
previous TV family. This is the last chance he will ever have
to do that---yet he doesnt even seem to care to at all.
There were already differences reported between JTT &
Zach Ty Bryan before he left the show----but it was
reported by Tim Allen before JTT left that the boys had
worked their problems out.
When the show first began, these 2 boys were very close
---almost inseparable. The when JTT’s fame began to excel,
he separated himself from ZTB’s friendship, & that is when the
problems all began between the two. Judging from the tears
& the crying hard clips seen of Zach Ty Bryan---evidently
the show had more impact on ZTB’s heart than it did on JTT’s.
Looks like fame has really swelled JTT’s head.
I have always been a HUGE JTT fan. But if this is his newly
found attitude---he’d best go on & attend school--because
he will eventually need another career to fall back upon with
that type of attitude.

Given all the rumors and stories about the problems of JTT, ZTB, and Taran
Smith with Home Improvement, it is hard to know exactly who is in the right
and who is in the wrong with every issue. What is clear is that the focus of
the show changed as the boys got older and they got less and less to do. I
can understand why JTT might not want to return considering the public
comments Tim Allen made about JTT's leaving. I heard some of Allen's
comments and they were not very professional, especially because he was an
adult criticizing a minor. In fact an adult with very serious problems in
his own life. If Tim Allen had any class he would have just said he was
sorry JTT decided to leave and wished him the best and left it at that. In
the TV Guide story Tim Allen goes on at length about the criticisms he made
about JTT but does not offer an apology, rather he offers an excuse that he
was "confused." Perhaps if Allen had actually apologized, JTT might have
returned for the finale.

I don't agree that Disney/Home Improvement alone made JTT. JTT's talent made
him much more popular that either of his HI siblings. ABC/Disney certainly
profited handsomely from JTT's appeal and fame.

It sounds to me like the show had a lot of egos. As I was reading the TV
Guide article, I thought to myself how Patricia Richardson seemed VERY
selfish making demands on her character and turning down $25 million for
returning next season. She seemed to me like she didn't want to receive
half as much as Tim. Lot of egos. JMO, I have no idea what the real scoop
is though.

>I'm truly sorry you feel that way.

More and more people are feeling that way Marcus. Home Improvement did make
Jonathan what he is today, that is a fact. And whether it was he or his
advisors, it was a very poor decision to turn his back on the show as harsh as
he did. It showed little or no respect for the show or cast that brought him to
his current teen stardom.

I agree with Donald 100%. I, too, t hought it was unusual that his excuse for
leaving the show was to concentrate on school, and then he does all these
movies. I can't blame Tim Allen for saying what he said. The show turned
Jonathon Taylor Thomas into the JTT he is today, rich and famous, and he owed
the show a final appearance. It think he was being too petty by not showing
up.

For once I agree with Marcus. Tim's "confusion" (see TV Guide article)
seemed pretty disingenuous to me. Only those involved really know
what's going on there, and I doubt the truth will ever really be known.

I finally got around to reading the article today and I had the same
impression--lots of egos. I guess I never guessed that there was so much petty
jealousy between most of the cast, especially Richard Karn (who comes off in
the article as whiny) and Patricia Richardson (who comes off as a prima donna).

It's funny, I never cared much for ZTB, but I was very saddened by the
article's description of his depressed mood and his "humorous" comment about
turning to alcohol. And it's pathetic that Taran got about two seconds worth
of coverage in the article. It was almost as if they were saying, "Oh, well.
He's only returning to life at public high school. No use wasting print on
him."

I can't speak for the TV show, but in the Teen People Magazine article
on which the show was based, no he wasn't. JTT is apparently too
young to be considered for a list of teens, according to Teen People's
warped thinking. (See my Friday 5/21 TV Report for more details.)
