Yes, the group alt.binaries.pictures.teen-idols (note the dash) is under the
same umbrella as this group. There may be a group on some servers called
alt.binaries.pictures.teen.idols but that may have been created without the
initial knowledge of the current ABPTI and doesn't see quite the traffic
that we do. Not sure who, if anyone, is in charge over there.

I was under the impression that alt.binaries.pictures.teen.idols
actually PREceded the ...pictures.teen-idols group.

Maybe one of the "old-timers" can clarify?

Digging into the newsgroup's history through Google, I found some really
interesting reading.

Here are some (a bit stunning) tidbits I found on the newsgroup's heritage.

~~ AFTI ~~
First, around May 1994, afti (alt.fan.teen.idols) was proposed and created as a
discussion newsgroup for teen idols with the starlets newsgroup created
alongside of it.

The idea was originally proposed with the dash as (alt.fan.teen-idols) but
someone recommended the dot instead giving birth to (alt.fan.teen.idols).

However, people were soon posting pictures in the newsgroup throughout the
Summer of 1994 flooding all of the discussion posts to where by October 1994
the pictures newsgroups were proposed.

~~ ABPT-I ~~
So in October 1994, the group (alt.binaries.pictures.teen.idols) was proposed
in (alt.config) to seperate the postings of pictures. Note it was originally
proposed with the dot to match up the two newsgroups names.

However, there was controversy because of the dot in (teen.idols) saying that
because it was a "pictures" newsgroup, it would draw underage porn appeal
because of all the other "teen" porn groups---so it was recommended that it be
changed to one word as "teen-idols" with a dash, which at the same time,
(alt.fan.teen.idols)'s original founder was condemned for not having done the
same thing.

I was not able to find out when the newsgroup with the dot
(alt.binaries.pictures.teen.idols) was originally created, if then or later by
some fluke of someone not knowing about this one.

There is a possibility it was created in Oct 1994 when originally proposed then
quickly abandoned when the dash newsgroup was created due to the dot idea being
condemned.

Also, at one point there was a post proposing the discussion group for TEEN
IDLES.

Couldn't help but picturing a very "inactive" newsgroup on that one.

And I found even more recently as Google's recent archive expansion allowed
us to see the very beginnings of our little group and got my curiosity
wheels spinning.

And thanks to a little delving we can see exactly when this group came to
being. Here's how:

If you have been to alt.config or read any of the vast "how to create a
newsgroup" sites, you can see discussions of things called "control
messages". These are carefully worded text files that exist to inform news
administrators of each group's existence and the rationale thereof. (Of
course the actual adding is up to each individual news admin). These
control messages are stored at the site of the nonprofit organization ISC
(ftp://isc.org/).

Anyhow, when I learned of this I decided to view the one for AFTI. Upon
doing so, I learned that the control message for us was sent and registered
on June 1, 1994. As we learned earlier, the first ever AFTI post was made
two days later on June 3, 1994.

> The idea was originally proposed with the dash as (alt.fan.teen-idols) but

Usenet hierarchy standards and practices state that parts of a compound name
be separated by a dash (-), for example, 7th-heaven, game-shows, etc. The
dot (.), OTOH, is used for subclasses of a group or domain of groups. What
probably happened was that they had alt.fan.teen, generalizing that zone,
then thinking "well, with all the fans of all things teen out there, how can
we break that down further?". As noted earlier, AFTI and AFTS were born
(and from what I can see, they carted their parent - AFT - off to the
retirement home). Just think about it; teen idols were a household name on
the net longer than O.J. Simpson. :)

So at first glance it might have been more syntactically correct at first
glance to use the 'dash'. And, since we seem to be the most active of all
the family, it all seems kind of a moot point anyway. But, the old saying
"you can't change a leopard's spots" rings truest on Usenet where change
and reorganization isn't even credible fantasy much less doable.

I know. And try viewing those on a text only Unix server and a dumb
terminal with very low cache memory like I did back then and you're in for a
shock. :)

At the time it seemed pretty silly (especially to then-newbies like myself),
but in retrospect they did actually have a point. After all, the
alt.binaries.pictures.teen.* domain would have put it in a class with the
erotica etc. groups that are under that heading. So the debate raged
between that and those who wanted to keep the subordinate binaries group
with the same name convention as the flagship (alt.fan.teen.idols). Well,
we got both.

Still, you can't really blame Jody for thinking back then that the fuss over
a dash versus a dot was really much ado about nothing. Usenet was a lot
younger back then, and who all really knew that it could be so overabused
for purposes like peddling junk? They do call them "NEWSgroups", after all.

Actually, according to the President's Council on Physical Fitness,
there are a LOT of "IDLE" teens. ;-)

Then I guess that newsgroup would be alt.fan.teen.idols opposite, huh.

One called
alt.fan.idle.teens

I even bet there would be people posting there with such names as:
~Hatem
~Mediumjock
~JTRboy (just the random boy)
~Strayz_Kid
~vromit
~Kru...@web.tv
~SNOOD
~BlindHag

;)

Wonder which, if any, celeb idles would qualify to be of the main topic??

SNOOD

A few years ago it might have been TJJ and Cross Joseph.

Now, it would be Frankie Minus - and maybe Douglas Drewitz Devin, whose
initials look oddly familiar.

lol
GOOD one Mark !

Let's see, there'd be:

~Elijah Wouldnt
~Aaron Crater
~Lame O'kay
~Scotch Leavemwork
~Martin Strangler
~Jonathan LickNipi
~Gayv In Funk
~Silly GilMan
~Just In HerField

Oh and a more appropriate name change for one of the posters:

~Change Hatem to Dislikem

(The former was a wee bit too strong.)

That proposal was probably *made* by some idle teens. :)

Seriously, is that where you came up with your handle - taking that then
anagramming it to RTJoby? Kinda worked out neat. :)

Don't forget:
Aluminumboy
Just A. Ceiling Fan
Algebrol
LaUgHgErt

How about The Amazing Joseph Loss? ;)

Surely the JTT stuff was more stunning.
