The medium of film is inherently high-definition. Your typical Hollywood
movie 20 years ago was shot on 35 mm film, just like the film you'd put in
your camera, and it has the same resolution as the photographs you'd take.
Films are shown on television basically by pointing a television camera at
a film projector. It's more sophisticated and complicated than that, of
course, but that's what it boils down to. Twenty years ago, it would have
been a standard-definition TV camera pointed at a film projector.
Nowadays, I would imagine they can digitally scan the film frame by frame
and assemble a high-definition digital video of the movie.
