Thursdays "Knock First" (titled "Rory") was one of their more
interesting one's. Rory is a 14 yo skateboarder who wins the prize for
having the most disgusting "before" room they have ever had to deal
with. You could tell taking the old stuff out of the room was the most
difficult task in the project (including scooping up an old jock strap
with a snow shovel). I have a feeling Rory and his 3 skater friends are
probably not the most upstanding citizens in their neighborhood and they
probably spend alot of their time "jackassing" each other. With that
said, they appeared to enjoy the doing the makeover and were very
impressed with the results (which isn't always easy with rebel teens).
However, I have a feeling the day the room was finished was probably the
last time it looked nice. If you like them slightly on the "bad" side,
you'll enjoy this episode.

Seeing this episode really reminded me how magical television can be when it
comes to making even rough-around-the-edges people look beautiful. I was
thinking when I was watching this, "These kids kinda look like, shall we
say, posterboys for the skater stereotype - but they don't *look* like bad
kids". Yet if we encountered Rory or others like him IRL and not on TV, I
wonder if they would instantly come off as attractive and polished for TV as
they did on the show?

From what I have seen, a lot of kids that subscribe to the "skater" image
work overtime at living up to the image - they sometimes go out of their way
to adapt the attitude and demeanor of what many believe skaters are. As to
what kind of person they really are inside - starting out, it may not be so
bad.
