I think Butch was set up to be the main anti- hero. But all the characters are
anti heroes in their own way. Especially Jules.

If you try to view Pulp Fiction as an epic, you can make a case for
either Jules or Butch as the hero. Each has a quest, faces obstacles,
yet comes out victorious in the end. The stronger case can be made for
Butch.
As for the protagonist...that's a different story. Who exactly is the
"main" character of the film? Nobody, really. The film is broken up
into stories, with different protagonists in each one.
In article <t9doheb...@corp.supernews.com>, Frank Falcone
this is good. within the course of the film, it was jules who actually saved
more lives, usually thought to be a measure of heroism. butch killed a man
(arguably, accidentally) in a prizefight, also killed vincent, and saved his
own, marcellus' and fabienne's lives (though i'm not sure if fabienne's life
was actually in danger.) vincent also saved mia's life. however, only
jules
consciously articulated a desire to live what might be thought
of as a heroic future life.
although, by his own admission he had killed many people in the past---
and murdered the four students who stole marcellus' briefcase.
so it's all very complex, but admittedly, i was rooting for butch to escape.
