Evenin' all,

I saw a snippet from a video whilst on hols last weekend.
Sting singing a duet with an Arabic singer. Sting on stage with him
and also in the back of a car (I think)

Very catchy.

Any ideas what I heard?

Kind regards,

Dermott

It's called "Desert Rose" and it's on his current album, titled, "Brand New
Day". The arabic singer is Cheb Mami, and he is really Algerian, I believe,
and is singing a form of music called rai, which is supposedly very popular in
Europe.

Whenever I've seen Sting discuss Rai music and Cheb Mami, he's always said
they are both popular in Europe...what part of Europe, he doesn't say.

My brother who plays Flamenco guitar said that some styles have been
influenced by Rai music which is very popular in some France (Paris), where
there is a large Algerian community.

In Europe he is almost not known. It's more in the Arabic country's
where he's known.

Many parts actually.

Not quite so. You're right of course but he's huge in France and very
well-known in other european countries where a certain tradition of arabic
influenced music is highly noticable. Also in countries like Romania where
gipsy music is a must - there's a lot of arabic influences in gipsy music.

I also remember Sting saying Cheb Mami is a well known singer very popular in
France. I saw a CNN WorldBeat segment on Cheb, he was banned from singing in
Algeria, something to do with his beliefs/songs and has become a pop star in
France.
