Didn't anyone realize where they were standing?
Not concerned with rules about standing under trees?
Not aware of the well-chiseled happy clam,

A talk given at the day conference Electra:
Electricity in Culture at the Royal Institution
Electric Affinities
Whenever she passed under an electricity pylon, my mother would
hold her breath. I knew enough in my scornful thirteen-year-old
superbia to be able to tell her how quaintly crazy such thinking
was, just as crazy as that of her mother, who thought that one
should never leave unoccupied plugs switched on overnight lest
the electricity should leak out, and spread across the room at
ankle level, in a deadly, prickly, miasmatic carpet. For did not,
does not every schoolboy know that electricity is force, not
stuff, the nature of which is to dart undeflectably to its goal,
following the line of least resistance and at the speed of light,
not to diffuse or linger malignantly in clouds?
Bright Amber shines on his electric throne,
And adds ethereal lustres to his own.
---Led by the phosphor-light, with daring tread
Immortal Franklin sought the fiery bed;
Where, nursed in night, incumbent Tempest shrouds
His embryon Thunders in circumfluent clouds,
Besieged with iron points their airy cell,
And pierced the monsters slumbering in the shell.
"So, born on sounding pinions to the West,
When Tyrant-Power had built his eagle nest;
While from his eyry shriek'd the famish'd brood,
Clenched their sharp claws, and champ'd their beaks for blood,
Immortal Franklin watch'd the callow crew,
And stabb'd the struggling Vampires, ere they flew.
---The patriot-flame with quick contagion ran,
Hill lighted hill, and man electrised man (Darwin 1799, 104-5;
Canto II.6)
Electricity developed a political ambivalence to match its new
two-sidedness. It stood both for the Promethean power of the
fire-stealing individual genius, and for the democratic currents
of fellow feeling. It signified both the hic-et-nunc of
individual revolutionary decision and the ubiquity of
communicated sympathy. as Alison Winter has suggested, the
figure of the musical conductor, drawing and directing the
energy of the orchestra, belongs to this electrical economy
(Wnter 1998, 309-20).

Franklin Park itself was named after Benjamin Franklin. In the
early 1900s, Franklin Field was the most popular playground in
city. The neighborhood as a whole has been described as

WILD NIGHT AT OUR HOUSE
HOW TRUE IT IS
Another year has passed and we're all a little older. This
summer feels hotter and winters seemed much colder.
I rack my brain for happy thoughts, to put down on my
pad, but lots of things that come to mind just make me kind
of sad.
There was a time not long ago when life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand about "Living in the Past".
We used to go to friends homes, football games and lunches,
now we go to therapy, to hospitals, and after-funeral brunches.
We used to have hangovers, from parties that were gay. Now we
suffer body aches and sleep the night away.

We are trying to run affairs for you the membership here in
Massachusetts and we have a problem getting you to come,
"WHY!"The Board would like to have, which is coming up June
2008 our 20th anniversary, But, theres always a but, how many of
our members would attend!

Reality
owns more
than the rain and the lightning,
it toys with
our puppet-strings,
the teetering scales
of give and take.
Then some joker asked to see the whole thing over.
"I'm bored with the whole shebang. It's no use farming out
miracles if Jansenists like you don't appreciate the task.
Watch with Mother'd be all you could grasp
of magical invocations, no bleeding metaphysics for you."
Anyways, my tricks would have to wait a whiles,
the pulleys were squeaking and those folk back there
in the Theatre of Hate would have no truck
with the scenery of this sad lot.
The whole apparatus was hackneyed mock Egyptian,
and I guess it was then or thereabouts I realised
the moral fabric of society was a bit of a jamboree.
Take that time I'd risen like Horus over the gorgeous
chitterlings of a weathered crowd in Minsk.
I'd rogered the cunts senseless before the curtain dropped.
I was gazing back at my long impervious retinue of shadows,
of burning fields and books, of cobbled paths of muddy skulls,
the balsam of calm in some cell
where snapshots of biddies formed an abattoir of grief,
or that verdigris on kids in the bloated rivers

30,000 PERSONS SEE ARMY TEAM DEFEAT NAVY ON FRANKLIN FIELD;
Grizzled Veterans of Uncle Sam's Service Mingle with Youth and
Beauty, While Embryo Generals and Admirals Contest for Football
Supremacy. ARMY VANQUISHES NAVY ON GRIDIRON
the arena was filled. The sun, which paled lamentably at the end
of the first half of the game and seemed to afford the sort of
sympathetic happiness to the Middles, was brilliant at the opening
of the game, and rioted in the challenging hues of gowns and hats
in the stands. The sartorial significance of the Army and Navy game
is always the last call of the season for fur coats
It is notoriously indulgent to owners of festive hats who are
constrained by ordinary football games to leave these treasures
at home. Its color scheme lends itself to extravagant use of
flowers and streamers. And these are the things which make
the picture- at least that portion of it which is independent
of the official trappings and gold lace of Uncle Sam's officers
and their charges, the middles and cadets.
The band withdrew and cheer leaders appeared. That is, a certain
semblance to arms and legs was discernable behind two monster
megaphones
The wiry boy in gray on the south side, whose gyrations
were fearful and wonderful, but who was able to coax
vehement and big-throated cheering from the cadets,
produced his famous "bullet yell". The middles' nimble
little cheerleader responded with the "siren", which he
appeared to grind out of the middles with rapid revolutions
of his arms, as if he were manipulating a street organ.
But these things are not potent enough to focus the eyes
of the Nation, nor to draw to watch their exhibition
the stalwart old heroes whose days are claimed for sterner
practices; the statesmen who must needs to have left the
toy wars to the limbo of foregone pleasures

July 4th at the Department of State
Last night was the State Department's 4th of July reception for
the chiefs of diplomatic missions and their spouses. The Head of
Protocol invited me to perform magic at this amazing party with
an Americana theme. The Blue Daze blue grass band and a group of
square dancers completed the entertainment. One highlight was
when a Gambian diplomat helped with a magic trick in Zulu, and
the Georgian Ambassador's wife said the name of her selected
card in Russian. The party took place in the John Quincy Adams
Room and the Benjamin Franklin Room on the ceremonial floor,
which has a balcony that overlooks the Mall. It is a perfect
viewing spot for the fireworks over Washington.
A Visit to the Neurosciences Institute
I just returned from the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, CA.
It is the coolest place! Founded by Nobel Laureate Gerald
Edelman, the institute houses 40 scientists who study the brain
and consciousness in small teams of two or three researchers.
Dr. Edelman's son David, who had invited me, had arranged
meetings with scientists who study the relationship between
language and music, and with experts on spatial memory. I also
visited the workshop of the so-called 'Brain-Based Devices' team
where Battlebots champion Donald Hutson builds amazing robots.

put this in the category of very neat, somewhat related to

Introducing, Once Again, the Threat of Nuclear Annihilation
This war has been fraudulently without blood. We've been treated
to a daily dose of misery -- the desperate lives of Afghan
people -- but they're now "liberated." So we're to believe kite-
flying girls and clean-shaven men roam Kabul. No more blood. Yet
the bombing continues, and all the real stats and stories are
held up in news rooms, presumably for patriotism's sake.

The Lost Pictures of Franklin Field
By Bruce Hoff
from SPOOKS!
Franklin Field never touched me. Our shoulders sometimes brushed
as we moved about the room or as we stood, never more than an
inch or two apart, at the window. But he never intentionally
touched me.
I found out more about him. He had a brother he hadn't seen in
years. His mother had died when he was sixteen, the event, I
gathered, that had caused or allowed him to leave Kansas. Like
me, he had grown up in a fundamentalist church. He liked the old
revival hymns. I caught him humming one of them one day: "Oh,
Lamb of God, I come, I come?"
I still didn't know I was in love with Franklin Field, but I
didn't want it to end.
I looked down at my body, sheathed in its dress. Early in the
first week I'd decided that the brassiere I'd been wearing wasn'
t right for the woman in the pictures. The next day I put it in
my bag but didn't wear it, and a few days after that I left it
at home. I don't think Franklin even noticed.
Did Franklin remind me of any other man who had, even for a
moment, fascinated me? No. Tom had been handsome, Clarence
beautiful. Franklin was homely, but he was his own man, unique,
utterly himself.
"Again," I said, my arms spread wide against the wall, my
fingers curled around unseen nails, my head bent to the side as
Christ had bent his in death. The shutter clicked
One day I imagined a picture, standing against the wall blinded,
washed out by the lights. My body would be one with the wall
It was impossible - literally impossible - unimaginable.
A mistake had been made. Somewhere, somehow, there had been
another Franklin Field
On the street, in the misting rain, the cabbie was leaning
against the fender of his cab. "What're you looking for, lady?"
"A man," I said hollowly. "He lives on the third floor."
The cabbie cast a speculative eye upward. "Lady," he said, "that
building doesn't have a third floor."

And this doling out of didactic history to the young was a meet
and proper thing. Young people ? and not just young Americans -
deserve and require to make the early acquaintance of a Ben
Franklin, say, but they do not, in the beginning, need to know
of his advice on choosing a mistress. Until lately, early
exposure to the lives of the 'good and the great' had the
threefold purpose of inculcating virtue and making the young
free of our common heritage; of at once sponsoring in them an
attachment to the local, to Burke's 'little platoons' of society,
and simultaneously subsuming this attachment in a broader world
beyond their own horizons; and ? with any luck at all - of
predisposing them to care about real, deep, adult biography and
history, where the gilt and the banners are not infrequently
spattered with mud and blood.
For example, I was raised a Southerner of Southerners, and a
Texan to boot. We had our household lars: Patrick Henry and Tom
Jefferson, Washington the remote and marmoreal, earthy Sam
Houston, the rip-roaring Bigfoot Wallace, and of course the
South's King Arthur, R. E. Lee, and his paladins: the parfit
gentil cavalier Jeb, in his cinnamon beard and plumes;
iron-graven Stonewall
For my generation and those that preceded us, Benjamin Franklin
was as much the diligent 'prentice who fled candlewax (and the
dread prospect of the manse) for the intoxication of printer's
ink, quite as much as he was the man on the $100 bill. He stood
for a certain largeness of mind, inventive, wizardly even, a
natural philosopher who dabbled in a genteel way in politics and
in his ripe age became a titan of the Revolution
a man who naturally found liberal-minded Philadelphia more
congenial than crabbed, Puritan Boston.
I am all too familiar with historians of, say, the War Between
the States, who regard it as a period from the 1850s to the
1870s, care obsessively about dubious and unprovable theses
regarding the roles of women (not infrequently spelled 'Womyn')
and gays, and would not know a redan from a lunette and could
not tell you the Order of Battle at Brandy Station on a bet.
Worse yet, they consider the War itself an irrelevance
Men of Good Understanding
Firstly, of course, it is an indescribable relief to spend time,
in these days, with a truly mature mind. Franklin, of course,
who was the original Elephant's Child with his 'satiable
curiosity, is very much the possessor of a mature mind: his
character is of intellectual curiosity and the power of Reason
all compound, with its touch of Leonardo, its family resemblance
to that other smiling rationalist Voltaire

www.sacred-texts.com/cla/tms/tms09.htm
In the old Roman days auspices were taken by magistrates before
crossing a river or any water which arose from a sacred source.
This was especially the case with the Petronia, a small
tributary of the Tiber
At the Roman Festival of Pales, in April, the farmer, his family,
and his flocks jumped through three bonfires of bean straw
The Romans employed burning sulphur in magic as well as in
religious rites. The reason for its use, in addition to its
apotropaic powers as fire, is probably that sulphur possesses
disinfectant, and medicinal properties, a fact which the Romans
themselves recognized. Moreover, sulphur suggested to the Roman
mind hot sulphur springs and volcanoes and the fears that these
inspired. Again, the Romans believed that thunderbolts received
their light from sulphur and that sulphur fumes accompanied a
discharge of lightning.
The death of the tree foreboded his own death. The fact that
lightning so often strikes trees and kills persons under them
doubtless led early man to fear them.

------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.eskimo.com/~billb/tesla/spark.html
So, we're standing outside in the time-frozen world of a raging
thunderstorm viewed from our 1000X perceptual acceleration. The
trees and bushes around us are thrashing frozenly in the stopped
wind
Higher up we see a tangled, branching network of dimly glowing
wiggly purple lines which look something like a tree root. And
like a root, all the tips of the branches are lengthening. But
this can't be lightning, it's dim and purple, not bright
blue-white.
One branch-tip is about a hundred feet up from where we're
standing. We can see that the wiggly line isn't moving, it's
only growing at its tip. It takes a tortuous, kinky path as it
lengthens, and occasionally a new branch starts growing from the
side of the main one at a spot where there is a particularly
sharp bend. Then we notice something else: everything on the
ground is starting to glow. Bits of dim purple fire are popping
into existence on the tops of bushes, the edges of the roof of
the nearby house, the tips of the rooftop TV antenna, on the
ends of all the tree branches, and even on the flying pieces of
roof shingles. As the exploring finger of dim purple lightning
comes downward, the purple "fire" on all the objects becomes
more and more intense. If you hold your hand in front of you,
the tips of all your fingers spout dim purple fire as well.
Now the dim purple lightning from above is about thirty feet
away, and the downward growth of its tip seems to be speeding up.
Then something really disturbing happens. One of the purple
flames coming from your fingers has suddenly started growing
upward as a narrow wiggly violet line! You pull your hand down,
but it's too late, the streamer of purple stays attached and
grows upward fast, it's two feet long by now. You notice that
this purple streamer from your hand isn't the only one, there
are now jagged purple lines growing upwards from many places
which formerly had the little "St. Elmo's Fire" flames. There's
a ten foot streamer coming from the tree, another from the bush,
and a couple from the roof of the house and the TV antenna. They
appear to be moving towards the incoming lightning strike. There
are even several coming from the wind-blown shingles, but some
of these are extending downwards towards the ground while others
grow upwards. The one from you're hand isn't winning, it
apparently had a late start, and the streamers coming from the
tree and the shingles are really shooting upwards now ahead of
all the others. And the downwards-growing streamer from the
shingles has touched the ground and is spreading out into a
small disk of purple rootlets on the surface of the ground.
Finally the upward-growing streamer from the shingles approaches
the lightning streamer coming from above. The two growing branch-
tips race together, and just before they meet they split into
several separate branches which all connect. And NOW it suddenly
looks like lightning, because the entire streamer from the
shingles is glowing brighter and brighter. The little disk of
purple filaments where it touches the ground is now several feet
across and looks like blazing blue-white tree roots. The whole
thing is far too bright to look at, and it's getting brighter
still. And something is happening to you.

Tesla made a demonstration related to radio communication in
1893. Addressing the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania and the National Electric Light Association, he
described and demonstrated in detail its principles. Tesla's
demonstrations were written about widely through various media
outlets. Tesla also investigated harvesting energy that is
present throughout space. He believed that it was just merely a
question of time when men will succeed in attaching their
machinery to the very wheelwork of nature
Later, Tesla would establish his Houston Street laboratory in
New York at 46 E. Houston Street
In 1882 he moved to Paris, France, to work as an engineer for
the Continental Edison Company, designing improvements to
electric equipment

Lightning Lass was born on the planet Winath. While traveling
with her older brother Mekt and her twin brother Garth, the three
experienced problems with thier space craft and found it necessary
to force a landing on the uninhabited planet of Korbal.
The three attempted to have the Lightning Creatures found on Korbal
re-charge their ship, but found themselves to be the victims
of their lightning powers instead. All three survived and found
that they had been charged with ability to generate
lightning bolts themselves

In fact both versions of Franklin's experiment were quite dangerous,
and in retrospect foolhardy. The first version involved mounting
an iron rod 20-30 ft. high on top of a church steeple
Franklin's prediction was that the cloud would discharge a
bolt of lightning that would travel through the air,
the iron rod, the church steeple and the experimenter
into the ground. In the more cautious, second version of
Franklin's experiment, he described holding a wire insulated
by a wax coating so that the wire--not the experimenter's body--
served as the conduit for the electrical discharge from the rod
to the ground.

We have remarked, further, that the Romans considered water
sacred, whether as spring, river, sea, or rain. The reason for
this, as in the case of trees, may be partly the fact that
primitive man associates motion of any sort with animate life.
The Romans used water from springs and from running streams to
wash away the evil effeas of contact with persons and things
possessing a mysterious power to harm

The guides told us impending lightning
made the stones chat and clatter, clacking
in that meadow, at 14,000 feet, the rocks
shifting restlessly, shivering against one
another, tapping one another into sound,
in the gathering embrace of an electrical
storm. If our hair should rise into a sudden halo,
we should fall to our knees upon the ground.
But lightning isn't born of the nimbus. The stones sing
because electricity is rising from the earth?fingers
of invisible light, unseen streamers, rising
out of everything that is.

[A] manifest example of the virtue of electricity was shown in
the balsam of Peru, which was so concealed in a glass cylinder,
that, before the excitation of it, not the least smell could by
any means be discovered. A man who, having a pain in his side,
had applied hyssop to it by the advice of a physician,
approached the cylinder thus prepared, and was electrified by it.
The consequence was, that when he went home, and fell asleep, he
sweated, and the power of the balsam was so dispersed, that even
his cloaths, the bed, and the chamber, all smelled of it. When
he had refreshed himself by this sleep, he combed his head, and
found the balsam to have penetrated his hair; so that the very
comb was perfumed. (Priestley 1767, 147)

What Does The Bible Really Say About Homosexuality?
I think Benjamin Franklin punched the issue right in the nose
when he wrote, "Sin is not harmful because it is forbidden, but
it is forbidden because it is harmful." The fact is that it
seems like most Christians need to step back from their Bibles,
take a deep breath, and just ask themselves what the issue
really is here.
Jesus had it right. The bottom line is this: who is being
oppressed and persecuted? Who is getting hurt? Rape is bad?it
hurts people. Pedophilia is bad?it hurts children. Violence is
bad. Killing is bad. Starvation is bad. Lying is bad. Stealing
is bad. War is bad. Racism is bad. Sexism is bad. These things
hurt people.
And homophobia, too, is bad. It also hurts people.

And Ben Franklin sketched the odds, warning that the
Constitution "can only end in Despotism as other Forms have done
before it, when the People shall have become so corrupted as to
need Despotic Government, being incapable of any other."
How might that happen? "History does not more clearly point out
any fact than this, that nations which have lapsed from liberty,
to a state of slavish subjection, have been brought to this
unhappy condition, by gradual paces," wrote Founder Richard
Henry Lee.

Constitutional Theory Does Matter
Whether theories of interpretation matter depends partly on what
they seek to accomplish. If Fish offers a theory of
interpretation that claims to describe the nature of
interpretation, as he does, he seeks to influence at least what
his readers believe about interpretation. Fish does more than
recommend something to others' beliefs, however. He offers a
prescription for their conduct. He says, in effect: "If you want
to interpret the Constitution, you have to seek the intent of
its authors." He therefore assumes that some people will want to
interpret the Constitution and that he can influence what these
people do. If Fish thinks theories of interpretation don't
matter, we don't see how he could explain his own conduct as a
theorist of interpretation.

A: Swimming during a thunderstorm is one of the most dangerous
things you can do. Lightning regularly strikes water, and since
water conducts electricity, a nearby lightning strike could kill
or injure you.
Any time you hear thunder, or see lightning, you should get out
of the water and into a safe place. A picnic-type shelter is not
a safe place in a thunderstorm. Instead, you should be in a
building with walls, or a metal vehicle.

Swim fins
An avid swimmer, Franklin was drawn to water at a young age and
consistently promoted the healthy benefits of the exercise in
his later writings. At the ripe old age of 11 he invented a pair
of fins that, unlike today's modern flippers, were strapped to
the swimmer's hands to help make each stroke more efficient. His
contributions to the sport led to his posthumous induction into
the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Bottled water was placed beneath each seat on Franklin Field.
The graduates used bottles to combat the roasting rays, taking
refreshing gulps of water and soaking each other playfully
with the cool liquid.
Although the graduates goofed off and had a good time,
they also listened intently to the speakers, who urged them
to put their education to good use in a world desperate
for leaders, desperate for change.
These efforts look to the broken places of the world and
seek to fix them. In the process, professors, students,
people with AIDS, neighborhood people, weave their lives
together in complex and textured fabrics, createing more
vibrant communities that enriches them all. Being part of
such a fabric can buoy you up, carry you through those
long, chilling nights that must, inevitably, come to us all.
And, if some night, you do wake up filled with fear,
even though you have been striving to repair the world,
remember, you are not alone. Some of your favorites professors
will awake with you.
G-d speed and G-d bless.

Poet's Postscript
Ten people got hit by lightning, in Boston. My bad.
I accept full responsibility.
Stop laughing, you calloused bastard! This is serious!
People died, here!
I suppose that I should try to be half-way serious- it is just
so difficult in a world of sheer, random madness.
Probably, most poetry-readers around the country
didn't realize that the July 19 fantasy about an electrical
storm (Griffith Electric) was followed by a front-page headline
in Boston about a dramatic lightning strike on July 20.
I thought that something might happen, but wasn't really
expecting it to be a news headline.
I would try not to make light of lightning, or people's pain,
but either 1) there is a method to the world's madness, and
there is really some meaningful purpose, which redeems all
destruction, or 2) there is no meaning in Life, whatsoever, so
you might as well enjoy whatever bitter laughs-in-the-dark
you can get. The light at the end of the tunnel
is probably just the headbeam an oncoming train.
When I started "Griffith Electric", the previous week,
I did not know the weather forecast for the week ahead.
Even a few days, before, the forecast said only something like
"chance of scattered thunderstorms" - nothing unusual,
nothing dramatic.
I was half-expecting, though, that something was going
to happen on Sunday, simply because I had written a poem.
I was not sure exactly what was going to happen. I was swimming in
a pond, wearing flippers (which I did not realize that I owed
to Benjamin Franklin). I knew that I really shouldn't be there,
when the sky was rumbling. I thought vaguely that maybe *I*
would get hit by lightning and that this might be my dying day.
Somehow, I knew, though, that in spite of the risk, I was
perfectly safe. I just knew. When I got home, I was told
that a dramatic bolt of lightning had been very near the house.
That did not surprise me, but I felt that was more symbolic than
threatening.
I was vaguely afraid that Bill Griffith, the cartoonist,
might die, not that I would have wanted that for any
reason. Sometimes, a poem reflects something that you
want to happen, other times, what you merely see happening.
I was afraid that he might be in danger for having criticized
Bush, which is something that a person should do only in
bravery, not in naivety. I was afraid that he might be suckered
by the "free speech" mythology of our country, and not realize
the danger in mocking power, these days.
William F. Buckley died, 10 days after I compared him to a French aristocrat,
who got knifed by a peasant. That one, I admit, probably would have been my
intent. Not my deed, just my subconscious intent.
It has become a central theme of my beliefs, to suspect that intent *alone*
can produce eerie effects in this world. It makes no sense to me
that this should be true. I merely *discover* that is true, in spite of its
being so counter-intuitive and lacking in scientific basis.
Actually, there *is* a bit of scientific basis- the Princeton studies, for
which I had volunteered, before they were closed down by a scientific
version of "political correctness". They are only missing out on one of
the most fascinating aspects of human existence.
I stopped being surprised by anything that ever happens,
in 1994, to be exact.
That was the year that I stood in the kitchen and announced
that I was going to make a plane crash in Washington, D.C,
to prove that I could create effects with my mind.
I only half-believed myself.
The headline, the next morning, was about a small plane
crashing on the White House lawn. I gasped and sputtered,
I thought this must be some kind of elaborate joke. That it
hadn't really happened, that they made this up in the newspaper,
like some kind of Candid Camera gag.
I was not so much surprised that it happened. I was surprised
that something like this had happened yet *again*. The odds against
coincidence were *already* astronomical, from too much history
to even attempt relating, here.
September 12, 1994. The date seems like some kind of
foreshadowing, in retrospect, doesn't it? I didn't remember that
this had been a September day, until just this morning, when
I Googled to see what year that had been.
In July-Aug of 2001, I mocked the ever-present ear of Big Brother,
how a gay man could hijack a commercial airliner and crash it
into the Pentagon. Just that such a thing would be possible.
I didn't even blink, when I read about a plane crashing into
the Pentagon, a month later.
It is all quite impossible, but for perspective, take a look above you.
You see that bright, yellow-orange, glowing thing?
No, I am not talking about a UFO. Just the sun, shining in the sky.
That, my friend, is also "impossible". You have a better philosophical
appreciation of reality, when you realize that simple fact.
It only seems normal, only because you are used to seeing it, everyday.
Why should it be there? If you travelled space, you would find that
space is 99.999+% empty vacuum. Why should that particular location
not also be empty vacuum?
You don't know, our best scientists do not *really* know. Even
if you call it "quantum fluctuation", you cannot find a physicist
who really knows why "quantum fluctuation" should be the
nature of reality.
If I had a big ego, I would probably think that I am a "prophet",
while others might equally laugh and say "schizophrenic delusion"
- in spite of all demonstrable, wild coincidences- while others would
say "Devil-possessed".
I think that all of that is backward superstition, or narrow-minded
scientific "know-it-all" attitude that fails to appreciate Life's mysteries
and our lack of knowledge.
I can only theorizing, but my personal leading theory is that
this phenomenon of "altering reality by conscious intent" is ultimately
one of Nature's clever illusions, like the sun seeming to revolve around
the earth, or the moon seeming to follow you, when you walk.
In quantum physics, they say that photon or electron does not
*have* a definite position until you measure it.
Not that we don't *know* it, that it doesn't *have* it. I am not completely
sure how physicists can tell the two situations apart, but they
believe that they do.
The electron exists more in a kind of probabilistic "cloud". The photon is more
like it is following *all* possible paths, until you look at it.
That is where I being to speculate, in extension: Where does
human consciousness exist?"
Perhaps it exists in a "cloud" of possible worlds. Thinking about one,
or putting your intent on one, makes you move toward that one.
Not because you necessarily even wanted that possibility.
Because you put your attention on it.
Even if it is ultimately just a flattering illusion, like
the earth-centric universe, sometimes in practical effect,
a good illusion is just as good as the real thing. We all
know that the sun doesn't really revolve around the earth,
but what practical difference does that make in our lives?
The sun might as *well* revolve around the earth.
It is just a theory. There are others. Maybe it *is* all
just wild coincidence. Maybe it is "God* working a "miracle"
for some purpose, to warn the world that it must change
its ways.
Maybe sympathizers in the intelligence world,
or unknown poetry fans in a Gay Mafia who read the poetry
and try to make it seem true, to "help", without my knowing.
I suspect that is probably not the answer, though. I have said
before, by the time that people finally become convinced that
I must be part of a shadowy, super-terrorist network, then I will
really blow their minds, by creating effects that are beyond
human power. Not to boast- this is just what it has been, and
is sometimes a bit scary/depressing, even to me.
I think that I am a bit like Harriet Tubman, humble slave, who also
had many connections to things paranormal- you really should
read the story.
If *I* got hit by lightning, as a homosexual, I am sure that
religious fundamentalists all over would feel very validated,
that this must be God's wrath against the heathen. I can hear
them. "God, God, God, God, God..".
The minute that a Church gets hit, or a Boy Scout troop leader
gets hit.. Oh, well, then it must be the Devil.
Or a coincidence."
Couldn't possibly be the obscene situation that our Churches,
which pretend represent the moral best, to be leaders
and teachers, are at the forefront of promoting hate.
Maybe it is even enough to make "God" sick of it and
demonstrating the need for change.
I don't doubt that most people would laugh at the idea of
a poem creating a lightning strike, but most people probably
laughed when I wrote the first poem about a crane collapse
in New York. They probably laughed less after the second
crane collapse in Florida, and even less after the third in
York, or the fourth in Houston.
Probably, by then investigators were very seriously suspicious
and imagining that they were within inches of getting to the
bottom, in short order. No one says anything, but probably
I have been considered a "person of interest".
They have no concept how interesting it all is. The crane
collapses did not surprise me, at all.
Maybe I just realized that there was a suspicious pattern
of crane accidents, after the very first crane accident,
and was a bit ahead of the game in that insight ;-)
In the literal, everyday sense of reality, I had absolutely
nothing to do with the crane collapses, any more than
the death of William F. Buckley, or lightning strike on
Franklin Field. Or, for that matter, the death of the 118
men on the submarine Kursk.
I had been writing submarine poetry, and trying to create
mischief aboard a submarine - actually, a rebellion by
gay sailors, sick of Navy homophobia. I am still waiting
for that one, like Waiting for Godot.
I wouldn't even remember that there were specifically
118 men on the Kursk, if I didn't feel some connection
to them. When travelling abroad, I wear a Russian Navy
watch with a blue faceplate that imitates the appearance
of ocean. In St. Petersburg, Russia, if you walk across
the bridge on the Neva River, from the Hermitage,
there is a musty, little naval museum. Nobody else went
there from my group, but I was drawn there like a magnet.
Shortly after the Kursk, I found myself talking to a man
who had been in the Russian Navy. He claimed to be too
upset about the Kursk to want to talk about it, but I suspected
that this was what was really interesting to him, and he
just didn't want to be that obvious.
I feel about the men of Kursk exactly what I feel for
the men on Franklin field or who died in crane accidents.
I have no connection other than "paranormal". I regret
the deaths, but do not apologize for them. My perspective
is that I am in a kind of war, as real as any war that
has ever been, involving as much risk to self
as to anyone else. I feel exactly what a commander in the
field would feel about the boys fighting for him, that
get slaughtered, or for the boys among the "enemy", who
he knows are not really all that different than the boys in
his own unit. I imagine that most military commanders
must wonder sometimes if they are justified to do what they
do, if the motives for the war justify the destruction.
In Boston, I recall a get-together at a Church on Tremont
street. Then-Governor Romney, also by then a Presidential
candidate. was there. Speakers referred to the word "gay"
as a "misnomer"; that we were "sodomites" and
"abominations" having a "vile affection".
Romney said nothing in protest. It should have been a scandal,
like rhetoric about "God not hearing the prayers of Jews".
The media reaction was nothing. Barely even reported it.
The political reaction was nothing.
The public reaction was nothing.
Make no mistake about this, people: everybody in the city
can die. Everybody in the country, everybody on the planet.
This kind of thing will change, or the war can be to the
extinction of the species, if this is the best that we can do,
after all this time.
When I write poems about "nuclear", I really mean "nuclear".
Trust me, it really can happen, like magic.
Please try to avoid it.
You should see foreshadowing of it, in things like the
poem about control rods, that was followed by a malfunction
of control rods at La Salle nuclear reactor.
I would have nothing "literal" to do with those events, either,
but I would have a connection to them as with the cranes-
unfathomable, even to me.
I don't believe that any this would be "evil". You have a
choice. Laugh, now, while you can, and die when you
run out of time, or change into a more enlightened way
of doing things. It is not an option.
Just have to follow some important safety rules. Do not stand
under a tree during a lightning storm; look both ways when
crossing a street; do not look the other way, unconcerned
and thinking yourself uninvolved, when your fellow human beings
are being oppressed.
