I was digging some old boxes of stuff and found an old Star wars
Adventure Journal for the STar Wars RPG. I was reading through it and
I discovered an old adventure written by a guy named Pablo Higaldo. In
it there is a character named Mace Windu! This was published in 1996.
The character bares no similarity that I can detect to the "real" Mace
Windu,b ut why do they share a name? Does anyone know the answer to
this? Please email me any response as I don't generally read this NG.

When George Lucas wrote the outline for the very first draft of Star
Wars back in 1973, he gave it the title "Journal of the Whills." In
that outline, the story followed a revered Jedi Master named Mace Windu,
and his Padawan learner. It wasn't until a later draft of the script
that Lacas decided to start with Episode 4 and save all of the earlier
story for a later date. I guess the guy that wrote the RPG found the
same information I did, thought it was a cool name, and assumed lucas
had abandoned it and it was free to use. So the origin of the name goes
all the way back to Lucas's ealriest thoughts on Star Wars.

I asked the group some time ago to confirm that GL's original script had
something like 'the adventures of Mace Windu' in the title.
I didn't see a reply, can someone confirm, please.

GL's first 13 page draft of Star Wars was entitled 'The Story of Mace Windu'

Nope. Although he was the main character in the earliest draft, he was
not in the title. The earliest draft was called "The Journal of the
Whills." The next draft, which was written in 1974, was simply called
"The Star Wars." By that time Lucas had chosen another character as his
protaganist, and that character's name was in the title of a subsequent
draft outline in 1975 called "The Adventures of Luke Starkiller. Episode
I: The Star Wars." After that, the title and the story underwent many
changes before becoming what we know and love.

The original script started with something like:

This is the story of Mace Windu, a jedi knight who blah, blah, blah

It even has the word "padawan" in it.

It's on the "Behind The Magic" CD's.

It's in the movie timeline

I was pretty shocked to see that myself.

I read in the unofficial biograghy of George Lucas that the main character
in the first draft of ANH, was named Mace Windu. Later changed to Luke
Skywalker.

If you haven't read it I have a copy of what is supposed to be the first
draft of StarWars available on my web site. If I remember there is a Mace
mentioned. there are also a few other character surprises.
