1. Putting Jar Jar in TPM was one of his biggest mistakes.
2. Calling the future Darth Vader Annie is unforgivable.
3. Letting the future Darth Vader say Yippee twice is atrocious.
4. Letting Samuel Jackson play Mace Windu is the worst choice.

What was needed was better writing and storytelling. In my opinion, the
whole Jar Jar/Gungan could have been written in a less ridiculous way. I
understand the GL thought the idea of symbiosis was an important theme of
the movie. I agree, but think that the catering to children aspects are
completely unnecessary. When I was a child I loved ANH and TESB. Neither
of these movies catered as flagrently to viewers with childish characters as
did TPM or ROTJ.

> > 2. Calling the future Darth Vader Annie is unforgivable.

> What would you call him? Kin?

I agree. Having other characters refer to young Anakin as "Ani" is very
appropriate. We don't know (at least we're not supposed to know if we
follow the story in chronological order) that Anakin becomes Vader. By
refering to Anakin by a cute nickname, it helps to endear him to us and make
his eventual fall even my tragic.

I wouldn't say it was the worst choice. Again, Sam just needs better
writing and scenes that allow him to demonstrate his talents. Well, maybe
not the "motherf**cker" parts!

Yippee is still a gay thing to say even for a little kid. I think it
makes Anakin look like a fruitcake when he says it.

Here's my two cents. :)

kong <ko...@one.net.au> wrote in message news:376B64F7...@one.net.au...

> 1. Putting Jar Jar in TPM was one of his biggest mistakes.

Jar Jar was a real character in the script and novelization. In the
original story line he doesn't say "how wude" or act like Curly in the Three
Stooges during the battle sequence. Nor was the fart joke there.

> 2. Calling the future Darth Vader Annie is unforgivable.

Pretty much a non issue. He is not Darth Vader. In the novelization it
becomes obvious that the cute kid is set on his dark path when Qui-Gon is
killed. The original story makes it more obvious that Qui-Gon Jin is a
father figure for Anakin, especially without his mom. When he loses them
both and is taken on by Obi-Wan (who shows him no kindness at all) its the
beginning of the end.

> 3. Letting the future Darth Vader say Yippee twice is atrocious.

Same thing here, although originally in the script he doesn't neccessarily
say yippee he is just a kid.

> 4. Letting Samuel Jackson play Mace Windu is the worst choice.

I have to agree here. He doesn't pull it off at all. And the script has
the same lines as what is said in the movies. When you read them, they seem
like something a wise Jedi would say. Coming from Jackson, they don't seem
that way at all. I think Fishburne (Morpheus from the Matrix) would have
been an execellent choice. Watching the Matrix a second time, he just kinda
struck me as a Jedi type of character that much more after seeing Samuel as
Windu.

Actually, last time I saw it I tried to ignore Jar jar and found the
movie quite pleasant "without" him.

What was interesting to me was that last time I saw the movie I was a
few seats away from about 8 kids so I was looking over at them during
the Jar jar scenes to hear their reactions. Didn't get much except for
the tongue scene.

I've heard of more women liking Jar jar than kids at this point.

I've seen Sam in movies where he's not saying motherfucker and he's
done well. It would seem to me that he just wasn't getting as much
directorial help on what was needed for the lines. Though I must point
out, as someone did earlier in this group, his "no" reply to Qui-gon was
great (when asked if Anakin was to be trained).

yes, also because of the tongue ;-)

no, Kinny. then in episode 3 everybody can say

I suppose he should have said
"ah, I am truly filled with delight and this
is indubitably a joyous occasion." I'll
wager there would have been just as
many complaints if he acted nothing like
a kid.

I'm guessing Lucas didn't write too much backstory about
Mace Windu. He was not an integral character. Hopefully
he will be in the next film though.

Yes, I also enjoyed his portrayel of a Jedi saying "no". =p

This is only interesting or surprising if you hold to the premise that
Jar Jar sole existence is to entertain and capture the attention of the
children in audience. Jar Jar is there for all ages (for all ages to
enjoy or hate, either or, but for all ages). I don't believe any
character in any of the Star Wars films is specifically targeted to any
one segment of the audience.

Howard the Duck was a great movie! A lot of people said it was "silly" and
having a duck as the lead character wasn't too realistic.

Excuse me?

Since when is ANY MOVIE realistic? Even parts in "Saving Private Ryan"
wasn't "realistic"!

It was a funny and interesting movie. People need to relax a little and just
enjoy things for what they are. Wait, I gotta run and flip off a neighbor
now for looking at me funny. See ya!
