Ok, so it's been about a month since i last saw TPM, but i'd like to
know first if anyone else stuck around to see the credits and noticed
that Ray Park was over-dubbed in his role as Darth Maul. Not that he had
enough lines to really notice, anyway, but why did they do this? Does
Park sound like tyson or something? What's up?

Same reason they used James Earl Jones for the voice of Darth Vader: sounds
meaner and cooler. Ray Park, according to himself even, does not have a
"tough sounding voice."

He has a very high voice., hence the need to dub.

Well, Vader was speaking through a breathing mask, so it's somewhat more
understandable. I guess i was confused because the parts that Maul
speaks don't require a ton of "toughness", yes? In fact, when he's at
his most mean, tough, and darkside-charged, he says nothing! You know,
how tough does one have to sound to say, "At last, we will reveal
ourselves to the Jedi ... at last, we will have revenge." I'm not
ripping on you, but i suppose i'll just have to hear Park's real voice
in order to truly understand. Does anyone know if there's a digitized
version of Park's voice anywhere in cyberspace? Thanx.

because
a- he's got an accent (as does David Prowse) and
b- he's not an actor.

Meaning that we must not judge Yoda by his size.... but we can judge
others by their voices.

The reason according to Lucas and people at Lucasfilms,
is that they considered Ray Park's voice to be too weak or
soft for the character.

Go to this is for more info at
The Ray Park Shrine @

Nice site I read every page to page.

I read (or heard) that the reason Ray Park's role was overdubbed was
because his voice was way too high for Darth Maul, so GL decided to do
it with someone else's voice. Don't really blame him even though it's
only 3 lines.

The actor who plays Darth Maul is a Scot from the Gorbals area of Glasgow.
Therefore his accent might have proved a littledifficult to understand for
anyone not from the West Coast of Scotland.

But didn't the actor who did Mauls voice have it dropped in pitch too,
to sound more menacing.

I am working on putting together an mpeg of Ray's appearance on The
Big Breakfast (Uk morning show for those who don't know)

On it he showed a few moves (how to do them) with the toy lightsabre,
then he judged a Maul lookalike contest, the winner got a Maul
inflatable chair signed. Then he took part in a human fruit machine
(he was a pineapple I think) you have to see it to know what I mean.

Hopefully I should have the mpeg done anyday now, along with a few
other bits like Ray showing the move from the Magic & the Myth
exhibition in Dublin.

Regards

Steve

Understanding is one thing. The thing with Maul was he had to have a
menacing voice.
If he had a brogue, how threatening would that have been?

Darth Maul was portrayed by a martial arts guy, so they probably wanted a
real actor to portray the voice. I'm also pretty sure that Natalie dubs or
loops Kiera Knightley's voice as well, unless the girl can do a perfect
imitation.

Natalie dubbed ALL of the Queen's lines over, for whatever reason.
I still don't believe it's Kiera Knightly. she would have to look a
hell of a lot like Natalie to fool everybody.

That's the trick though isn't it.
She doesn't look a lot like natalie. There are a number of facial
differences.
I wish I could find a pic of Keira to set them side by side.
She's been in 3 flicks according to IMDB, but I wasn't able to find a
picture of her on the search I tried.

She does--she does. I saw a picture of her a few weeks back, and she
looks quite a bit like Natalie Portman. And then, imagine after having
loads of makeup on both faces--quite a close match, actually.

In the The Making of TPM book, it recreates a call sheet for the day of
filming on the Coruscant platform. Ms. Knightley had a very early make up
call, and was the only handmaiden listed (because of course she played the
decoy in the arrival scene). It also listed a chaperone and tutor for her,
meaning that she's underage. I think someone posted earlier that she's 28.
Well maybe she's in graduate school and just misbehaves a lot.

Oh yeah I know that... it is for dramatic license... just as we have
sound in space... it just sort of flies in the face of what Yoda taught
by not judging him by his size... nor we should judge others for how
they sound like.

I am not saying that it was wrong to overdub his voice (they did it
from the start with Vader (Prowse/Jones)). I am just seeing the irony
in it all.

Also, I think it was the 'tone' of his voice... or whatever you call it - it
wasnt just the accent. Whoever it was whose voice they used - it was
*amazing* !!! The kind of voice that just sticks in your mind - kinda like
the sort of impression that Darth Vaders leaves, very distinctive.
