Heh. No offense, but the only thing that can inspire me is a big flashy
anime, or a good deal of flashy Sonic comics (fan or pro) that are in action
format. Right now I'm settling with Gundam Wing *drool*... because Dragon
Ball Z is still shootin' reruns at the viewers.
You also got to have good music playing in order to inspire me. I'm one of
those artist's that'll get inspired through someone else's work and the
setting in which I'm surrounded in. Not to mention music. Music is a good
part of my drawing abilities.
I'm really deep into my drawing. I'll just zone out while thinking of what
to do, and I'll animate it in my had, wif a sound track in the back. I'll
act the voices of the characters. People consider me coocoo for Coa Coa
puffs. I'm not. I just REALLY love this stuff.
*blinks and notices how off topic he went from Whickman's reply*
I mean... um. It won't inspire me. And if you're saying that your drawings
are bad, they won't turn me psychotic. I'll point out the minor errors and
I'll prolly tell you about them, and ways you can fix them. Unless you want
that or not, tell me. I'm one to ramble on when it comes to comics.
Let me just add this:
If you're a newbie, forget about it. I'll only draw newg's and reg's. ^_^

I didn't draw the pictures. The artwork itself makes anime (etc.) look like
it was drawn with a crayon by a Yogi Bear producer

Well, at least DejaNews uses fixed-width.

Before you buy.
This is not exactly a Newbie Question, but more a Technophobe Question...
What's fixed-width?
Mike
fixed width makes every character the exact same width, verses
variable width, with has every character a different size. Here's a
test to see which you are using:
|
@@@@@@|
OOOOOO|
iiiiii|
......|
______|
If all the pipes line up, you are using fixed width. If one pipe is
left, another in the middle, another to the right, you are using
variable width. Fixed width is standard for ASCII art, because each
"ASCII pixel" is the same size and you can do darkeness or shape
(depending on how complex) by which character you use.

Well, let's see. I guess I may as well go the anthro route, since I don't

Uh, clothes... dammit, why can't I find a good picture of Murdock anywhere...
Okay, I'll do my best to explain it.
Ratty dark blue baseball cap, brown leather jacket with a black shirt
underneath, dark blue jeans, and worn-out hiking boots. That should work...
Oh, and obviously no psycho-super powers, big-ass guns, or the like. Need

Examples of fixed-width (monospaced) fonts:
Courier New
OCRA Extended (the kind they use for captions in cheap sci-fi movies)
Andale Mono
Lucida Sans
Examples of proportional fonts:
Times Roman
Arial
Tahoma
Any freeware font on the Internet (which is why I hate them. Well, that and
the fact that 80% of them are disgusting looking.)

Hey, catch!
I know how you feel there. What colouring program do you use? I use

Well... that is more easier. I couldn't possibly draw that humongous thing
in the back of everyone else. Knowing me, I'd draw it ALL out of proportion
with that big hamster. Sorry man; I'm settling for this.

Eck... *feels dumb and stupid now*
I use Photo Shop 5.5 and PaintShop Pro 6. Eck. I just completely suck with
the special effects (shading, how to properly outline the character). I suck
at backgrounds too, and I tend to over use the lens flare. :P I'm only good
at makin' banners.
>(But thank gawd for magic wand tools ^_^;;;) And thus it takes
> me a couple of hours to colour a simple pic to an almost good
> standard...
Yeah, same here (bout the hours)
You shouldn't feel dumb for using those proggys, they're good. (I'm
just too cheap to buy them and don't like using pirated software)
> Eck. I just completely suck with
>the special effects (shading, how to properly outline the character).
It takes practice to get shading. (If I start telling you stuff you
already know, just ignore me... I haven't had chance to see your work
yet as my *&%^$£ browser is being a git and won't jet me get at your
site... If you could send me the actual URLs of some of your work, I'd
be very grateful.) Normally, there's 2 main ways to go about it. As
you've got programs with layers, it's a good idea to have one layer with
the line are, and a layer with the colouring underneath. Get your colour
layer, and work on that. Then, if you go over the lines, it wont matter
because your line art is nice and safe on another layer. If you ant to
be really snazzy, have the line art on one, the flat colour on another
(This good so you can see the composition of you pic before doing the
intricate stuff) and the hi-lights and shading on another each... or
whatever... and you can have a separate layer for the BG behind it too,
if you want...
Now, the two main ways of shading I've seen used by most fanartists is
airbrushing or cell styled. (I play with both from time to time.)
With airbrushing, grab a section with the magic wand tool. If it doesn't
get the whole bit you want to shade, add more bits until you've got it.
The very quickest way to shade and highlight is to get the airbrush so
it's very transparent and do it with black and white over the colour. If
you have more time, do it with lighter or darker shades of the main
colour. I especially recommend doing that on human character's faces and
skin And example of what using black on the airbrush over colour can be
seen here (I was too lazy and stuck for time to go any highlights...)
http://www.coopefamily.demon.co.uk/fluffy/flufcros.gif
Note that you can have as many different layers of shade and highlight
as you can be bothered to put on. If you've ever done Warhammer
miniatures or the like, think of it like dry-brushing; the more levels
of shade you get, the better the results.
Cell style has a habit of taking much longer. Think Anime style
colouring. There's half a ton of ways of doing this. The least
complicated is to draw each patch of shade or highlight with a medium
thickness line with antialiasing turned on, and a colour a few shades
darker or lighter than the area you're doing. Fill it in and then use
the air brush or paintbrush to get rid of the antialiasing on the inside
of the section. Repeat. (Now that I think about it, on your program you
could use it on an almost transparent layer, with plain black and
white...
General shading things, remember that things cast shadows on things.
Always remember where the light source is.
In regards to outlining, (again, I haven't seen your work so I can't
give you any specific advice) varying you line thickness in the right
places helps a lot (I usually put a fairly thick line around the outside
of a pic, medium thickness for most of the rest and a fine one for
little details, eyes and mouths etc) Try to know pretty much where
you're going to put your colours when you ink. (if you're going to
colour the pic. I like leaving thing in black and white a lot of the
time.)
> I suck
>at backgrounds too,
Ditto. The best one I've done recently is
http://www.coopefamily.co.uk/art/jackson1.gif
which took a long time to do. Remember to make the background less
eye-catching than the picture if you can, and make sure the main
picture's colours go with those of the background (Adding a very
transparent layer of the main colour of the by over the coloured bits
for instance. You can also make some groovy lighting effects that way
when you know how, There's plenty of tutorials around.)
> and I tend to over use the lens flare.
Heh, I don't have that tool to save me. I have to hand draw my
special effects if I want them. ^_^
> :P I'm only good
>at makin' banners.
I bet you're better than that. It's a prime request of us artists to
have low self esteem.
BTW, if you're wondering how I know this crap, I read the 'Anime-
artists-uk' mailing lists, and questions about colouring pop up a fair
bit. And then, there's a lot of Anime Fanart sites with tutorials on
them...
