whale-of-a-tail Sonic 2 post, but I suspect most of you got into Sonic after

Well, I was hoping somebody might have somethin' lengthy.. Because otherwise
I'll feel really stuck up. ^_^ Oh well.
I had preordered my copy at Die hard about a month in advance.. Does
anybody remember die hard? They used to run the coolest ads in EGM, I
swear.. so many pictures of cool games, and a lot of imports, they gave
better import coverage than most magazines at the time ^_^ EGM, my mag of
choice (Boy did they ever go downhill!! Assuming they were ever any good,
now that i look at my old issues, they really did kinda suck.. although the
picture quality was better than it was in 1995...) stopped running the ads
when Gamefan came out, 'cuz they thought GF and Die Hard were in cahoots
(Dave Halverson/E.Storm founded both establishments).. Gamefan was pretty
rare (at least in Libby!) till fall '93, so I didn't see many more ads till
then.. Now Game cave seems to have taken over... Anyway, since at the time I
lived in a small, insignificant Montana town with no game store that sold
anything past a $50 Super Mario Bros 3, I was determined to get my game from
Die hard, because the ads made such a big impression on me. When you
preorder, you'd get a free 'Are U up 2 it?' T-shirt, so that was extra
incentive (although I didn't know about that til I read about it in the Toys
R Us ad from my neigbor's Spokesman's Review. (See, Libby, the town I was
in, is so pathetic we have to get the Spokane Washington paper for any REAL
news!!) I had overnight shipping, which is why the game cost me $70, and I
expected it to arrive on the 25th, since it would arrive at the store and
THEN be sent to me. It was okay that I paid $70 for it because my Genesis
hadn't had ANY games besides Sonic 1 (which was all you needed anyway) since
I got it Xmas of the year before.
I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. You
couldn't get yellow onions, because of the war. All we had were those
biiiiig red ones... hmm.. Too much Simpsons, it's conflicting with my
existing memories... heheh.. that was a funny episode...
Anyway, I was all hyped up at school, all my notebooks had Sonic
pictures all over them (which was normal anyway) and each one had its'
own Sonic 2 countdown counter ^_^ I may have been boring all my
so-called friends (I didn't actually have any friends at school... :( with
Sonic 2 talk all day, but I don't remember.. School life while in Libby is a
total blur for me, I only remember a few snatches here and there..
Anyway, I came home on the bus and went to my friend Mark's house, he
was 2 grades ahead of me (so not a school friend exactly) and lived down
the street from me, but on the way from the bus stop. We were thinking
about how cool it would be if Sonic 2 came that day when my younger
brother called, and said there was a package for me!!! 'Hah!' I said, 'That
must be the T-Shirt. They sent it ahead of schedule, how nice of them!!'
So we ran over to my house to check it out, and low and behold, there
was NO shirt!! It was Sonic 2!!! Wasting no time, Mark and i started
playing it.. I may have forgotton to go to the bathroom, as I often did
when exciting things like game magazines arrived in the mail... Man, it
took a while to break that habbit, but it was quite a relief when I did. I
hope I didn't suffer any permanant damage because of that.... ^^; uh, as I
was saying...
We were dissappointed that the title screen was the lame one that it is and
not the one we'd seen advertised, and that multi-player mode only had a
few levels.. But the real fun started in single player mode. I made it to the
Chemical Plant boss.. you know, he's not easy at first!! Wow.. I can
remember how magical it was at the time... I haven't thought about it for a
while.. but it was! Just as much as Sonic 1 was.. ^_^ Anyhoo, Mark took a
crack at it (and I discovered tails could be controlled with the 2Player
controller... it's obvious now but it wasn't then! So I could lend a hand
with some spots...) and made it all the way to Metropolis!! Scary.. It was
kinda sad that the game whizzed by like that, but it was still cool.. Of
course, I'm much better now, but he did have more gaming experience
than me..
Then we had to shut it down while i did homework... I left the game on,
actually, to listen to the demo music.. ^_^; Oi, you know homework's
tough when you've got a new game right next to ya, and that was no
exception.. Mark came back with a tape and discovered the options menu
with the soundtest (If I'd bothered to look in the manual [much too
excited] I might have found it.. ^_^) and recorded a little of the music for
himself, and that's all I rmember...
Now you may be wondering about the shirt, and I was too, so I called Die
hard and DEMANDED a shirt.. But the one they sent me was huge! Like,
down to my knees.. So I ended up just giving it to Mark, 'cuz he's really a
big guy.. ^_^ And that was okay, 'cuz 6 years later it paid off when I got
his 'Uncommonly Sophisticated Robots' Virtual On Tshirt, which wasn't
big enough for him! pretty slick, I think...
Heh heh.. just you wait till Oct. 23rd next year, when I relive Sonic Mania
day!! BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!
Michael
Hey, what does happen next year on Oct. 23 that has to do with......
OH! Stupid me! I forgot, that's supposed to be the US relese date of the
Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure! (I think)
Quote of the month:
"Did we miss dinner?"- Sonic The Hedgehog
** * TimeStones* * *
** * ***
"Danger, Water Rising..."
REALLY? Wow, SoA's big on "imporatant" release dates, Sonic Mania was 1993,
when Sonic CD, Spinball, and Sonic Chaos were all released... You know, I'd
be sort of irritated if they could release Sonic Adventure sooner than that
on a less "special" date... -_-
