News on SA2! - Bumper 8:20 am 04-18-00
Some news on SA2, courtesy of Zifei. Yuji Naka has confirmed (Note from
Russell: Where? I haven't seen it....) that Sonic Team is NOT working on SA2.
Sega of America is doing that instead. SA2 is featuring a new female character,
no details have been released about her as yet, so we can start guessing now, I
guess. Also, SA2 will feature full screen bumpmapping, meaning higher graphic
quality for the game. That's all for now. Bumper

Now who exactly is making this game? I thought the only development firm SoA
had was Visual Concepts. But how can they possibly be in charge of such a huge
game like his with NFL2k1 and that other wacky game (Forlord Brothers or
something) in production? Their not that big of a team. Does this mean that the
Sega Technical Institute (makers of Sonic2-S&K) is back? Did they ever leave?

I dunno... was it SoA that handed the Sonic franchise over to Traveller's
Tales?
I rememeber that TT made Sonic 3-D Blast, and... one other game who's name
escapes me at the moment, so they might be a possibility as well. Not the
best possibility mind you, but they are one nonetheless.

I imagine these battles would be reminiscent of the boss fight with Bob the
Goldfish in Earthworm Jim. After a 25-minute FMV inspired by the "Eden" GF
from FF8, you would merely be required to walk in a straight line and bump
into the magical plot device that happens to be in the room at the time.

Enerjak: Now I have the ULTIMATE POWER!! Soon, I shall RULE the WORLD!! HA
HA HA HA!! HA HA HA HA!!! HA HA HA HA!!!

Knuckles: Ah... ah... CHOO!!
<a giant green booger flies out and hits Enerjak>
Enerjak: Oh, NOOOOOOOO!!! This magical booger, energized by energy from the
Master Emerald, is draining my Electrostatic ENERGY!! I'm losing power!!
Uhn, uhn, NOOOOOOOO!!! NOOOOOOO!!! NOOOOOOOOO!! NOOOOOOOO!! Curse you,
magical flying space booger!! CURSE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oy. Well, since I've not seen any word of this on any -- yes, any --
gaming news site, I'd take it with a few grains of salt. We know that
Naka-san isn't working on Sonic Adventure 2 right now, and we know
that Sega has promised the title in the relatively near future. At
the moment, it seems at least probable, considering the source, that
someone previously-uninformed put two and two together, got seven,
and simply decided to fill in the cracks on his own.
I'm holding off panic until I hear more definitive news.

yah - its true. I was wondering whether I should delete it earlier
cause it hadnt been FULLY FULLY confirmed. Zifei got the news off a
Chinese gaming website. And - well he can read chinese and I cant :P
Plus Zif has rarely been wrong. He got a lot of the pre-Sonic Adv. news
dead on. But as for all notes on the SoA thing in full I guess we'll
just have to wait till sites report on E3...
At any rate - before I went to bed last night I found out that its NOT
just Sonic Adventure - but a "Sonic party" game called Sonic Shuffle
included as well. Meaning 2 Sonic games. You can see the post on SHQ
News...

I gotta agree on this one. Trying to mix the Segasonic universe in the
Archie continuity was bad, trying the reverse principle would be
catastrophic. All I can say is that I still stand by the "separate but
equal" propositon when it comes to Sonic and his many incarnations.
Let's just hope they never try to mix Sonic Underground into the next
game if they were to do something along those lines. [shudder]
> Plus there'll
>probably be a soundtrack by Britney Speares or some shit.
Nah. I'm sure that if it degenerates that far, some other sufficiently
talent-dead glam-pop/boy-band Group Of The Month will surface, and
they'll get the nod.
>And Sonic will be "Woah, far out, homie" or whatever all the

Amen to that. Let's just pray that Sega never decides to create the
Dreamcast equivalent of 989 Studios, or the video game economy will
surely be screwed to Hell and back.
Well hopefully that won't happen. And I'm 100% sure it won't, since they've
already stated their will be only _ONE_ new character...
I will murder the whole lot. Plus there'll
>probably be a soundtrack by Britney Speares or some shit.
The soundtrack for SA1 was produced in America (As was the 3D intro
apparently). I'm pretty sure they'll choose the same people to do the sequel.
And what if they do choose Brittany Spears or NSYNC? Do you think they care
what you and the rest of the world thinks? SEGA's primary market is the US
(Hell, even SA1 was OBVIOUSLY aimed at the US audience). So whatever will help
it sell here will be incorporated into the game...

I highly disagree at that. The music they choose is at the peak of
the popularity in Japan; the story is talking about Japan and WWII;
and I don't see any referances to America. I think it was targeted to
Japan with the rest of the world thought about.

Yeah, and the soundtracks I have are Japanese and have the same music as
the game. I don't understand. And the intro tune that plays during the
opening FMV is on there, and since the music is timed exactly for the
intro, that kind of knocks out the possibility of the FMV being US
produced. So WTF!?

Sonic Throws A Party
Posted: 04.12.00
By: Chris Tang & Kevin Parrish
Although not set in stone as of yet, Sega's Sonic Team is supposedly
working on a new Dreamcast Sonic game called Sonic Shuffle that will
be a party game similar to Nintendo's Mario Party. The game will also
contain a collection of mini games that you can play with your
friends. We'll let you know more details as they are released from
Sega's Sonic Team.
-----------------------
No mention of Sonic Adventure 2, although it would seem odd, assuming
that this is correct (and, honestly who knows at this point), that
Sonic Team would develop a "Mario Party" clone and then leave Sonic
Adventure 2 up to someone else.
Hm. So we'll just have to see who has his facts straight, I suppose.
I guess if Sonic Team is, in fact developing the above title, it
might not be too awful. But honestly, I'm not too fond of the idea.
Why do I have a feeling this concept comes from upper management
rather than the development floor?
--
-- "Fnoooooo...?"
(Oh, yeah -- it's lousy, cheap,
and derivitive.)
And they say that since SoA is in charge, the new female character is Sally...

Bah. I hate how SoA = Archie. IT DOESN'T.
Sega actually, for the most part, HATES the freedom fighters. If they want a
comic about their character, they want it to be ABOUT THEIR CHARACTER. I
think the last thing they'll do is take a character from Archie and put it
into a game. And heck, the copyright problems alone would make that
impossible. And anyway, who cares that it's not made by Sonic Team? Sonic 2,
3, and Sonic and Knuckles weren't. If anything, we should LOOK FORWARD to
this.
Although I still don't like the idea of a Female main character... or where
she's gonna come from.

>And anyway,
>who cares that it's not made by Sonic Team? Sonic 2, 3, and Sonic

Well. Sort of, anyway. At least Naka was present, which basically
makes the issue moot (he being the most essential element of Sonic
Team). For a comparison and contrast, look at what happens when he
isn't around -- we get Sonic Spinball and Sonic X-treme.
But again, I'd hold off on even bothering the brain with the issue
until something more definite shows itself.
>Although I still don't like the idea of a Female main character...
>or where she's gonna come from.
Hrm. From Amy's evolution in SA1, I'd not much mind her having a more
prominent role... but I agree, mostly in the sense that I don't think
we need any more stock characters in the roster. Any new characters
should be incidental to the plot, so far as I'm concerned -- such as
Chaos and Tikal.

(For two years previously to SA,
a friend of mine had the obscure
handle of "Tikal". Now he merely
looks like a silly, gender-swapping

Wait wait, I thought Karl Bollers created Nate Morgan. Or at least came up
with the original concept.
What was wrong with Sonic X-Treme, apart from the fact that it was never
developed into a standalone program?

Well, strictly as a game, it looked sort of intersting, but it seemed
to be a very peculiar interpretation of exactly what Sonic is. The
female character and her professor father. Sonic being able to sprout
metallic spikes and throw rings... These ideas all sound like they
were thought up for some silly cartoon, and they certainly don't fit
into the Sonic continuity or tone terribly well. The game itself,
again, looked interesting, but didn't seem to have much to do with
Sonic. The lack of any particular center of gravity; nightmarish
checkered escher-type mazes to bounce around in. Perhaps with some
other character it could have turned into something rather
intriguing, but I can really rather see why it was canned as it was,
strictly from what has been revealed about the project.

-- "Fnoooooo...?"
(Indeed!)
After finally going out and getting myself the latest issue, I have to ask:
What's so bad? Certainly, there's a serious lack of continuity that needs to
be addressed. However, the more Sonic the better, right?
Sheesh. People gripe about Sonic dissapearing these days, but then they
gripe about what they already have.
>After finally going out and getting myself the latest issue, I have

Uhh... no.
Let me put it to you this way, Mike...
Would you rather have someone tell you a hundred stories that were all rather
dull and predictable, or would you rather have someone tell you one story
that was so intriguing and original that you wouldn't mind hearing it a
second time?
Would you want to watch 10 movies that were only mildly interesting, or would
you want to watch one movie that was so well made you could watch it over and
over without getting bored with it?
The important thing of any form of entertainment is quality, not quantity.
And you can't have one without sacrificing some of the other.
And lately, it seems like the Archie folks have been working more on
attempting to get more copies of their next issue sold and get a quick boom
of new readers then they have on making it worth money people pay for it,
thereby creating a more stable fanbase.
Now, I know that ultimately it all comes down to the bottom line in any
business, but these people should keep in mind that if the consumer isn't
happy with the product, there won't *be* a bottom line.
> Okay, a bunch of people have been complaining about the Archie comic.

Uh, aside from the story quality sucking completely, I'll say two words:
Nate Morgan.

Hey, I'd rather Bollers get the blame for this travesty! We can't let him run
free to create a whole army of those walking Deux Ex Mechinas, to ruin
everything we get some form of enjoyment out of!
Next thing you know, Nate Morgan will start invading TV, movies, radio...
every form of entertainment out there just so Karl "I need 3 pages of
exposition to explain what could have been said in two panels" Bollers can
have his own personal ego trip, ruining everyone's fun becuase he wants
everyone to be forced to stare at his crappy little pseudo-fan character.
Hell, I'm starting to think Bollers created Nate Morgan because he doesn't
like Sonic and wanted to sabotage the comic so he could get payback for
something.

I was watching "Philadelphia" as I read this post. Of all scenes, it had to be
during the aria scene. (Those not familiar with the film, RENT IT!) The scene
is reaching pinnacle just as I read "...or would you want to watch one movie
that was so well made you could watch it over and over without getting bored
with it?"
I knew, right there, that "Philadelphia" was one of those movies. And I also
knew, right there, that Archie Comics would never, on their current track,
reach that height of quality.
My point here is that I applaud you, James. I applaud your statements and your
presentation thereof, and....well.....that's it. I've exhausted what I was
saying. Once again, I applaud you.

I think that Sega Technical Institute, SoA, and Traveler's Tales are all
working
on this together. Besides, its pretty well known that the Sonic Team can't
be working on it with them trying to get PSO done this year.
Anyway, I have an SA2 preview page up on my site (I'm the first
site to this) up for anyone who want's to know everything that
has been rumored and said about the game.

Well, STI I can trust, SoA and Traveller's Tales I'm not to sure about. I
mean, Sonic 3-D Blast wasn't exactly a monumental point in Sonic gaming
history (admittedly it probably seemed like a great idea at the time, but it
didn't really pan out in actual practice). And we all know what SoA has
dumped on us when Mr. Naka isn't watching.
Still, I guess all we can do is watch and wait... and hope that they don't
screw this one up to high hell.

Well, if they could work in a way to let you play your own CDs like they do
with some Playstation games, it wouldn't be so bad.
Damn, Sonic Team always makes the best games. Travelers Tales did Sonic 3d
Blast and everyone knows how much that sucked, and SoA is just plain horrible (
i only trust America with sports games.) but at least STI is working on it.
They made some okay Sonic Games.

What little there was of Sonic R, was really, really good. But the big
problem was that there was so little of it. Therefore it didn't last long
and didn't get anywhere.
But SA2 won't be like that.

"Time for some super sonic speed!" -- Sonic, Sonic Adventure
No. #1 because TT are an exclusive SoE developer (or so I think. The Saturn
version's music was developed in England as was the game itself) , and #2, it's
been 5 years since the STI has made a Sonic game, so it's pretty much assured
they've left SoA for better opportunities with other gaming companies. If,
indeed, SoA ARE making SA2, I'm sure Naka-san would not want his property to be
alternated and has sent trusted Sonic Team members to the US to monitor the
production (so people, don't get so upset about it). He's not stupid. I'm sure
he has taken the right steps to assure SA2 will stay true to it's name, and not
some "archie stamped" sequel (people are saying Sally will be in the game now.
Geez...).
Besides, its pretty well known that the Sonic Team can't

Exactly. That's one bit of evidence that is making people point fingers at SoA
as the new developer for the SA franchise. Some others I myself have picked up
are these: SoA Peter More was the one who CONFIRMED it's existence and went on
to say it will be shown at E3 this May. And American magazine EGM will publish
the first images of SA2 next month...

You don't seriously believe that crap do you?
*sigh* Your not well informed are you? All of that "crap" _DID_ happen...
Sorry, I didn't mean ALL of the above, I just meant the bit with EGM...
Well, I've heard from numerous people that it's true. Plus a few gaming sites I
visit mentioned it...
If EGM doesn't update their site soon, I'll have to fix my scanner! They still
have the Feburary Issue as the current one.
