Looking for Archie Sonic comic help

I'm interested in getting into Sonic comics, but need help
understanding them fully. I was under the impression that the main
comic was a continuation of the original American cartoon, whereas
Sonic Universe was a continuation of the old Sonic X comic, which tied
into the cartoon of the same name, and was it's own continuity,
featuring characters NOT in the main title, such as Amy Rose. I've
only read a small number of issues of the main title. Could someone
please explain all this to me?

universe depicted in the SatAM comic ("He's the fastest thing
aliiii-e-iiiive")
this universe is COMPLETELY DETACHED from the video games. the Archie
comic series is essentially glorified fanfiction
