I think that the Archie Comic has a good future with their Sonic The
Hedgehog title and their Super Sonic Speacials. The good thing is that they
leave you in suspense. Like that Zone Cop guy in Super Sonic Speacials and
also when they had some satellites shown in many issues. Does anyone else
read this comic? And if so, what is your take on it?

Funny, I just had an idea while writing this. Why can't Ben Hurst,
Pat, and Len Janson become creative consultants/continunity

with as much experience writing Sonic as them.
This is probably something that should have been done when SatAM was
cancelled, because instead of the comic blazing it's own path with stuff like
Endgame (ick) we could have at least seen some of season 3 in comic book form.

This wouldn't work because:
1) Though they both had the same characters they had different story lines and
it would be stupid to see what happened in season three in a completely
different universe.
2) If Ben Hurst was so good at writing SaTAM then why was the season when he
wrote most of the episodes the last.
3) Ken Penders is a much better writer then Ben Hurst and thats final.

At the time SatAM croaked, the Archie material wasn't exactly killer. I do
think they've gotten better now though. It's just that the characters come
off as dead behind the eyes in Archie. Look at Sonic for instance. He's
supposed to have "the most attitude going around". Then why is it we never
see any of his attitude anymore? All we get is events bouncing off a
dead-panned Sonic's forehead.

Because the Power Rangers clobbered Sonic in the ratings, proving that kids
are more drawn to bright colors than compelling plots...

Maybe in your (ABC)book but not here, Butch. Although Penders is a good
enough writer, I have yet to see him write anything that matches "Sonic
Conversion", which was SatAM's finest hour IMO.

At the time SatAM ended, the Archie comic was not too far removed from things.
Besides, it wouldn't be the first time it suddenly swapped universes completely
destroying all continuity (AoStH -> SatAM, and now SatAM/Archie -> SA)

>

Oh please, since when does the quality of writing have anything to do with a series
being renewed? When was the last time a television programmer sat down and said
"That Power Rangers show has terrible writing, better cancel it"?

>
> 3) Ken Penders is a much better writer then Ben Hurst and thats final.

A flame war over Sonic writers? Why not!

While Ken has done an excellent job on Knuckles series, Ben is still the
better writer. "Blast to the Past" parts 1 & 2 established most of the history in
the SatAM universe which Archie would later adopt. The idea that Robonik was really
a decorated general who lead a military coup was formulated on Ben & Co.'s watch.

I would much rather see Ben Hurst's project pull through than any rumored
Penders work. Ben has earned my trust, because the second season of SatAM was
consistent, entertaining, and pretty darn cool. I don't have the same respect for
Ken because his stories jump all over the place and there is no goal or overall
plot. He just kills time between Sega game adaptations (I'm not too keen on those
either).

Um. Do you believe that someone who worked on one series is incapable
of working on another? A good writer can do that. We smart cavemen call
"Diversity."

> 2) If Ben Hurst was so good at writing SaTAM then why was the season
> when he wrote most of the episodes the last.

Oh-ho, so now you're trying to hit below the belt of a professional cartoon
scripter? When you work on a cartoon series that is later immortalized
by the sheer size of its cult following, call me and perhaps I'll give you a
cent's worth of respect. Maybe.

Ben Hurst's writing ability did not have anything to do with the downfall of
SatAM; overall ratings did. It would not matter who was writing for the se-
ries, because Power Rangers blew it away. In those days, MMPR could
blow -anything- away. It's still large and in charge (although not annoying
and perpetually in-your-face), and SatAM isn't the only series which lost
out to it in one way or another.

I have heard the theory of the SatAM animation cels having been sold too
early which violated some kind of contract, but if the series was pulling in
enough revenue, then Sega seeing to its cancellation doesn't seem logic-
al. Besides, I have some SatAM cels, with a certificate of authenticity, too.
As the days go by, that one becomes less and less believable. Sadly, I've
heard that all of the SatAM cels remaining with DiC have been destroyed...
and while this is not unusual -- something that doesn't seem as if it will be
used again being disposed of -- I find it artistically offensive. SatAM wasn't
an all computer-generated series like many of those that are popping up
nowadays, but it was -- as far as I know -- completely hand-painted. Those
were works of art on celluloid. If it's true... it's sad. Can't bring those
back.

> 3) Ken Penders is a much better writer then Ben Hurst and thats final.

This barbaric and stupidly phrased comment (given the number "3" for the
sake of Capcom of America to avoid its confusion with number "2a") was
brought to you by the "Stupid People Who Can Type" Project. Unfortunate-
ly.

Oh, and another thing; the Sonic Archie Comic would not exist in its cur-
rent form were it not for SatAM. Writers originally watched the series for
reference on how to portray the characters. For a while, it was a wonder-
ful comic; just look at #21-22, #25 and #39 (and for some fans, #39 and
"Mecha Madness"). Compare those to the quality of current comics. I do
hope you notice the difference. Now, #25 was a Sonic CD adaptation, and
a lot of people liked it. It worked the FFs in without trouble. If you see any
comics which try to work the FF into them now... talk about a mess...

Ken Penders did an excellent job with the masterful "Knuckles" series...
but please, keep him away from the Sonic comic, unless he's doing more
Knux stories. And would someone do the world some good and brutally
murder Nate Morgan? Rotor oughta break out a Goddamn can of whup-
ass on that fuzzy little twat. His theories and so forth don't make a frick-
in' bit of comprehensible sense. Fault of the writers? I don't know. Why'd
he ever appear in the FIRST place? Was he actually NEEDED? Wouldn't
have been if anybody opted to use their IMAGINATIONS... Nate brings
total shame to any Sonic fan with half an ass (a brain helps, but it's not
necessary, he's too stupid). Thinks he can replace Unc Chuck as the in-
ventor of the Roboticizer and other crap, sorry-assed little bastard.

Just dropped in to peruse the ol' group and found this thread running,
so thought I'd put my two cents worth in. As for Len, Pat and I working
for the comics, that's highly unlikely. There was one tentative
overture made a while back, but it sort of fizzled out. We're all
flattered by the thought of fans wanting us to supervise continuity, but
I think that might rob ya'll of some of the originality of the comic
writers.

Interesting. If season three were to be done as a comic, it would
mustneeds be done as a stand-alone series and by my estimation would
probably require at least 12-20 comics (or more) to accomplish all the
storylines that would emerge.

I think we're both good writers and we both love Sonic. I think it is
much nicer if people simply say they like a writer instead of making
comparisions. Our talents are uniquely different and we both have our
strong and weak points. It's the nature of the beast. My feeling is
that Sonic is a fine character to write. I'm honored and pleased to
have had the opportunity to do so and I'm sure Ken feels the same.

As those who read this group and who are on Ron Baurele's email list
know, I'm trying to take Sonic a step forward in some form of the media,
whether it be direct to video releases or even a motion picture. I will
keep you posted of any progress or setbacks.

May I state a little logic here?

(Logic on this NG... whatever next...)

Raz talks about Ben Hurst with the utmost respect. Ben Hurst, who
played a major part in making SatAM's second season so good. I think a
lot of people like Ben's work.

And therefore as she stated something nice about Sonic (i.e. her
liking of Ben's work) your little phrase telling her to go away for
not liking Sonic doesn't wash.

I think a little disdain will be needed with you. You seem to write
without thinking.

This is one of the primary reasons why Ben is so admired. He listens
to the fans. He has been interested in trying to get another series of
SatAM up again. He writes stories well and writes Sonic's character to
a high standard regularly - his stories featured Sonic as a primary
character rather than stories starring Bunnie/Sally/Antoine with Sonic
making a cameo appearance.

Ben, I hope your hard work in trying to get another series or a video
reaps a reward of some sort.

Now, would you trust Ken Penders to make an interesting and gripping
half-hour show without:
a) plot holes
b) killing a main character (or two) off :)
c) introducing a new character every episode - as cute as Coyote's
statement about the Freedom Fighters' base is overcrowded, how many
brand new characters have been put in Archie around their base?

From the limited amount I've seen of Ken's work and the stuff I've
seen of Ben's, I can safely say SatAM has something that Archie
doesn't. In SatAM, there was action without making it hammy and
over-used. There was humour without being too slapstick, and sarcasm
was used (there were jokes which you never understood at a young age
that you laugh at when you're older. The 'escargot' sequence had a
Monty-Python-ness to it that I still can quote to this day, I remember
this part so well:

(Snively's interrogation chamber. Antoine is strapped to a leather
chair, with Sniv walking around him, and a light shines over his
French head. Snively offers the chance for Antoine to talk, Antoine
refuses because of his love for Sally. This then occurs:

Sniv: Then I must make... escargot!
Ant: Aah! But escargot are too special, you fiend! Zey must be
pre-pare-d just right, you maniac!
Sniv: Yes, yes, of course. We start with plump, juicy, snails...
Ant: (with a hint of panic in his voice) ...oui...
Sniv: A little garlic...
Ant: (sniffs the garlic and slurps in delight) Ah... oh, oui again.
Sniv: ...And...
*Sniv picks up a yellow item on a plate. Antoine is in euphoria at the
idea of eating escargot*
Ant: Oui, oui, oh, yes, oui, butter.
*Sniv stands up to full height to cackle his words of torture*
Sniv: ...MARGARINE! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ant: Marjarin? Marjarin!? Oh, you would cook escargot with marjarin.
Ohho, but no, it would be too cruel, you fuel... oh, OK, I will give,
I will give, oncle, oncle, I vill tell you everything!

Sheer brilliance.

If he was boiled alive in lead, he would be dead, regardless of
whether he was young, old, or dead before the boiling would commence.

And Mark doesn't have brain damage... he's just... misguided.

And any more pathetic comments and anther loser will be added to the
killfile list.

No, that would make him an IDIOT.

Here is a guide to AFSH, aimed at you to try to save you from being
hated by the masses.

1. Mark taunts everyone. Fighting back - as a newbie - is like wearing
a sign saying "Please hate me." in your school. And attempting to
flaunt with every teacher there. Regardless of your teacher's gender
or whether they like 8-year-olds.

2. I side with Mark. This NG can get very OT when we can't think of
interesting topics. I don't know how long you've been here, but you
can't come to this place thinking you're the greatest thing ever -
hence the taunts. The arrogant need to be brought down a peg or two
before they become a pest. Raz has been here, from my calculations, at
least 73000% longer than you've been here. I think she knows what
stuff can be gotten away with.

3. "Hey newgroup, I have just gone onto the net and I found a cool
sonic theme.
If you want to find it, go to Metacrawler, then type in Sonic The
Hedgehog
Theme, and look for the third, second or fourth down, and you will
find some
cool themes. Goota go."

This is your biggest and best Sonic-related contribution to the NG.
Remember that, Mr. Grate.

flattered by the thought of fans wanting us to supervise continuity, but
I think that might rob ya'll of some of the originality of the comic

Take care,

Ben
