Is there by any chance, any long-time Sonic fans in here still? I'm 19 and I've been researching late 90's-early 2000's Sonic fandom, and I was hoping someone here could maybe enlighten me on what it's like (Assuming anyone still goes here. I'm certainly insane to join after so long!)

I wouldn't say in here all this time, but something happened that made me come back to check on the usenet group, look for an old post or two from that era. There's definitely people I know that were (and remain) more interested in Sonic than I was (and still am) alongside being more prominent members of this group from that era. Honestly, typing in usernames of people in that era, whose names sound like real names will find a lot of us on Facebook, should you want to ask about their personal experiences.

My personal feeling is, this community felt very generational. A lot of us were very excited to have a community area out there to talk about things, attached to the default email browser at the time (Outlook Express) but this place was used for a lot of reminiscing about older Sonic experiences from the mid-90s as well. I feel the question you're asking is very broad; what niche of the fandom are you talking about - the games, the comics, the TV shows, the fanfiction?

Oh hey, sorry I'm late, didn't see this till I checked my spam folder. Honestly, I think learning about the fanfics (and any other creative media) would be fun to hear about.

There's still plenty of 90s-era Sonic fanfics out there, if you know where to look. Dan Drazen's site is a good place to start: https://www.andrews.edu/~drazen/slfanf.htm

You might also look up the stories of Bookshire Draftwood, and the duo of Robert Brown and Francis Tolbert. Those three were definitely the most prolific fanfic authors of the early fandom.
