I get the feeling this is the very beginning of thousands of <insert
number here> Amendment arguments and, if we're lucky, a bunch of riots
like the brits have after their soccer teams lose.

I think this whole Napster ruling is ludicrous. The music industry may
have won over Napster, but what about the other mp3 trading software
being released over the Internet nowadays. One of which, the name
escapes me for the moment, has no company in charge of it. Instead,
it's run by its users. therefor, unlike Napster, the music industry
won't be able to stop it because--heh--theirs no one to sue TO stop it!
Unless their going to try and sue millions and millions of people,
which I doubt--no, i KNOW won't happen! And because Napsters being shut
down now, all it's former users will eventually catch on to this new
software and jump on it on the first chance they get--so what I'm
trying to say is, this battle is FAR from over here. And I doubt it
will ever BE over. I think this is a new evolution for music
productivity--I think the Internet IS the future for music. And the
music industry is going to have to find another way to make a profit
from it because now, thanks to technology, music is finally free!!

OK, let us follow this logic.
Other fans are afraid of our fans so they allow our thugs to attack them - and
then retaliate?

We can put the theory of fights when England play football away from Britain
into a word equation.

English thugs + Foreign people prepared to fight + Poor policing -> fight.

__________________________

Add a catalyst, however...

English thugs + Foreign people prepared to fight + Poor policing + Alcohol ->
one hell of a large fight.

Hence why the Portugal game (half-strength beer, police around, but not
provoking anything...) went well.
And why the Germany game (lots of beer, Belgian police with zero tolerance*)
didn't.

--
Dean

* Yes, this was poor policing at its best.

As an example - a couple of English people run into a coffee shop during a
brawl. The Belgian police fire tear gas INTO THE SHOP, not only getting the
English 'thugs', but several Belgians, in an absolute panic and oblivious to
what was going on.

Were you insulting Cameron? oh..dear.. I will have to
quietly explain the newbie/newgular/semi-reg/reg rule to
him.

DO NOT INSULT SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN HERE LONGER AND IS MORE
RESPECTED THAN YOU!!!

People just don't understand how vital that rule is. They
really don't.

Whoever you are, do you know how big of an IDIOT you are? Napster was made for
people who have music and want to share it with others to test it with their
tastes before they (hold onto your w@r3z, D00D..) BUY THE ALBUM! It's people
like you who are getting the thing shut down, abusing your privelage by ripping
off the people who worked hard to come up with the songs and sing/record them.
Do you actually think that so many people would keep doing this if they didn't
get paid for it? Do you think they would care if they knew that the number of
assholes just like you has probably ended up outnumbering the number of honest
people out here? There are lots of people out there who would be sad to see
napster go, yes, but not all of them are greedy little shits like you. I can't
stress enough how much I HATE you people.

[snip]

While I don't agree with hating people over the subject, I do agree
with Stealth here, pretty much. At the moment, the recording indus-
try isn't actually suffering because of the circulation of MP3s (even
though they like to say that they are). Of course, they're probably
looking ahead; if they let this go on for a number of years without
nipping it in the bud, it really -will- cause them significant finan-
cial loss. Computers are becoming increasingly popular, more people
are interested in getting one, and they're manufacturing ones cheap
enough to satisfy the causal (curious) individual. As programs become
easier to use (which is an inevitable), and computers are in more
households (just as TVs are now in virtually every house), you can bet
it will be even harder to control music piracy. If they don't start
doing things now, they'll pay for it in the future.

I don't really give a crap about the recording industry, personally. I
download like, a hundred MP3s over the course of two months, or less.
However, if I do like a group enough, I -do- actually purchase their
record. Most of the stuff I'm really into though -- like high-quality
REAL techno, for instance, or Japanese music -- isn't readily avail-
able on US shelves. I have a number of import albums, but importing
stuff is extremely expensive, so MP3s are a great alternative for me.
It's not like I WOULDN'T buy those albums or singles, I just -can't-.
And I already have a library of like, a hundred CDs, so I think I've
done my part of giving the recording industry its due.

'Course, this is just me. There are plenty of people who download MP3s
with no intention of ever reimbursing the artists. Now, if albums cost
$500 a piece -- I'm making this example because, c'mon, how many
people do you know that have Adobe Photoshop that actually PAID for
it? -- I kinda wouldn't be so against the idea. But, hell. After it's
aged for a few months, an album costs like, $12-$15 bucks. That's as
much as a pizza, or -- if you're like me -- a sushi dinner. You can
live without one of those for a while. (And if this has painted the
image of me being rich, trust me, I'm really not such. I auction crap
on eBay semi-regularly and make enough at work to buy things once
in a while, but I also have bills to worry about. Who doesn't? Well,
aside from younger teenagers and kids...)

I'd like to say something else, by the way, since I am proud of my
special little meaningful post, here. Stealth, don't get your panties
in a twist, all right? You know I'm outspoken as hell in public, and
I spoke up against you on that other string for a reason. You don't
just go cussing people out when they did something with no intention
of insulting you personally (unless they're retarded, like Gonterman).
So I don't agree with what you did at all, and I think it's a silly
thing to be so worried about. But I didn't cuss you out over it, did
I? Well then, why did you cuss at me? You're still my friend, wheth-
er you're pissed at me or not, but I think you really need to chill.
You have let stuff you should just ignore or nevermind piss you off,
when there are far more important things to worry about in life. Be-
sides, if you're going to stand up for something, try to do it calmly.
No matter who you talk to, they're far more likely to forget about you
if you're cruel to them. People won't give you respect if you try to
earn it in a disrespectful way. So, take a chill pill, and move on to
working on something that'll get you good recognition, like your pro-
grams or something more meaningful than a code. You'll probably
feel a hell of a lot better if someone praised a program you'd written
than you would if they E-Mailed you saying "cool!" about a GameGenie
code. And that is my public apology, of sorts. Yes. Indeed.

Most people are sleeping or bumbling about when it's 6:20AM. Me?
I've stayed up all night, and I'm actually contributing with a good
post! Egad!

Oh yeah right. the people at Napster discovered a way to sell a product

Hey, I'm a musician. I've distributed a lot of my mp3's
free, but when i get a record deal, i would prefer it if
people _bought_ the albums, so I could eat? You know, earn
money for my hard work?

You make me sick.

I agree with Ron, partially. It's best people actually _buy_ the real product.
I look at Napster as a "try before you buy" type of deal. I listen to a
particular song from an album, then if I like it, go buy the album.

But I do admit--I use SNES emulation for games I had never had the chance to
play, or had rented and liked, etc. So that's kind of the same deal. I'm on
both sides, really.

Actually, I should have just stayed out of this argument...

But then again, Russ is the guy who was going to make a soundtrack for his
Sonic fanmade comic book, in which I _tried_ to tell him is incredibly illegal
since it is in fact _SONIC_. But that's another argument alltogether.

Hey, speaking of you, Russ, why have you been using DejaNews all of a sudden,
when you have AOL newsgroups right here in front of you?

Errrr... Well, I guess that sort of answers my question.

Well, from my opinion, Napster isn't really harming record sales... The record
industry makes plenty. If you want to stand up for the artists, turn your anger
towards the record industry...they're the ones who take most of the money. In
reality, the bands don't even get 50% of the money that should be theirs, since
THEY made the music.

No, not everyone will use Napster in a 'good' way. There are Mp3's I've
downloaded that I will not buy the album, because it just dosen't interest
me...only that particular song does. Then there *are* albums I've bought
because of a few tracks I've downloaded and loved.

That entirely depends on the human, it's like earlier it this thread saying
Brits riot at football matches, then narrowing it down to English fans, then
changing it to thugs and hooligans which can come form anywhere.

The average human wouldn't just go on a major killing spree, there has to be
something to make the person do that, eaither mentally which I think and
hope are in the minority or in their environment to push them over the edge.

'Tis a sad attitude to take, when many people in the music industry are in

and only about the music and mean it.

There are, it's probably the best ways out there of finding a few tracks
from a CD to see if you like the artist or really obscure or out of print
tracks like themes from older films or title themes from TV that aren't
available as sound tracks or on compelations

Most of these artists don't need the money anyway. Look at these people who

Ohh Ron's a moron. And don't agree with him because there is NOT two
sides in this argument!! I ever choose an apparent "side," i never said
I think music should be free and that you shoukd download all of it on
Napster. No, I said "I think this is a new evolution for music
productivity--I think the Internet IS the future for music. And the

music industry is going to have to find another way to make a profit
from it because now, thanks to technology, music is finally free!!"

I was just being realistic here. Eventually music companies will have
to find a new alternative to make cash from their records because
theres just to many people trading mp3s (20 million people use Napster
alone), and it'll increase and increase in light of new mp3 trading
software being released over the net now. So you see, i wasn't giving
my own personal opinion in this, i was just being realistic. But
Stealth took it as a slap in the face and thought I was "one of those
people". Then Ron backed him up--so NOW theirs apparently two sides in
this argument. One where music should be free, and one where it
shouldn't. But again, tyheir WASN"T two sides in this argument until
Stealth totally misunderstood my message. What a dumbass.

>It's best people actually _buy_ the real product.

Of course. But do you think people will when their introduced to mp3
trading software?

Same. I buy CD's everyday. Like that new Bon Jovi CD Crush.

>

Again, their is no "sides" in this argument.

But anyway, food for thought, i was reading sokething about how
emulation and copyrights work. Now I'm not sure if this is correct as
the source wasn;t that reliable, but apparently after (i think it was)
8 years, copyrights expire making emulation perfectly legal. Sounds
weird huh? Could be some truth to it, tho'.

Again, Dane, it wasn't illegal. And again, heres why:

#1: it contained original compositions by me and a friend of mine.
#2: No where on the album does Sonic the Hedgehog appear, nor does his
name, Sonic the Hedgehog.
#3: The soundtrack was called The Sonic Saga Soundtrack. Not The Sonic
The Hedgehog Saga Soundtrack. SEGA couldn't have slapped a lawsuit on
me because SONIC is an ACTUAL WORD, meaning FAST, and was used waaaaaay
before Sonic was created.

What your saying--you make it sound like Sega could sue Capcom for
havinjg one of its characters say "Sonic Boom!". it can't happen.
