Cello solo in 8th Quartet and Lady Macbeth

Hello all,

(I recently posted this question to rec.music.classical and haven't received
any replies yet... I thought I'd post here, too, even though the
signal-to-noise ratio seems to be quite low.)

I've read that the cello solo at the end of the fourth movement of
Shostakovich's eighth string quartet is taken from his opera Lady Macbeth.
Can anyone tell me where in the opera this aria occurs, who sings it, and so
on? The melody is simply beautiful—especially in context!—and I'd love to
know what the original sounds like.

There is, alas, no traffic in this Usenet newsgroup nowadays. There
