Ok, I realize that I'm probably going to be
attacked for post this but this is my opinion
on the DiC dubs.

Alright, DiC didn't do that great of a job of
dubbing from the originals, I do admit that.

BUT, I do believe that they deserve some
credit for their attempts.

I mean, if you have seen the originals and hate
the dubs, I can't blame you but then again, no one
said that you HAD to watch the dubs.

So just back off when u take all this time out
to bash them becuase at least they tried. And
for some, this IS the only way that they can
see the series.
And remember, if DiC hadn't dubbed the series,
many less people would have known about and
there would be less fans or Sailor Moon.

Just my two cents.

So go ahead, feel free to pick this apart.

So, so true.

I wasn't really a dub, it was an "adaption." They changed a whole heck of a
lot.

Unfortuantly, that's true for me (until I get some fansubs).

Very true.

It's not THAT bad, despite my .sig

Oh yeah. Well, some of their eps are fairly close...and their dub does flow
naturally when it flows at all...

You'll only be attacked if you say something silly.

<snip - dic did bad job>

Why? They made an adaptation. Why should I, as an anime-lover, give
them credit for delivering a hack and slash dub of an initially good
series?

> I mean, if you have seen the originals and hate
> the dubs, I can't blame you but then again, no one

No, nobody did. However, wouldn't you be annoyed if you found out what
you'd been missing because DiC didn't feel a need to let everyone in on
the secret? DiC almost turned me OFF from Sailormoon and anime as a
whole because of the awful job they'd done!

> So just back off when u take all this time out

What did they at least try? You mean that they tried to deliver a
series dumbed down for 12 year-olds? Thank you DiC! Good job!

> for some, this IS the only way that they can
> see the series.

You have Internet access, and you're saying this? With the same money
you're throwing away on one month of net access and cable, you can "buy"
enough fansubs to last you for months.

> And remember, if DiC hadn't dubbed the series,

More fans of dubbed Sailor Moon is not necessarily a good thing. It's
helped to spread the phenomenon known as Crappy Geocities And AOL
Webpages With Misleading And Inaccurate Information Copied From Other
Geocities And AOL Webpages. It also annoys many of us when some of the
dubbies refuse to watch Sailormoon because "I don't want to read
subtitles" or "their names are too weird".

Hey,
I agree with what you said (stop bashing DiC), but I totally hate the
new voices that DiC used for the 17 new!! Especially Rei/Raye!!!! Some
people thought Mamoru/Darien's new voice sounded better (or "hotter"
whatever _you_ think.....^_^;;;) I don;t think that the new two voices
suit Raye and Darien AT ALL!!!!! Raye sounds _way_ worse and totally
un-unique, like she used to, and Darien sounds younger!! Almost like
something that came off of Mghty Max, of TMNT or something!!! (I'm NOT
bashing these shows.)I mean, IT JUST DOESN'T SUIT HIM!! When I heard the
voices of Dairen and Raye for the first time, I knew that they suited
the English speaking characters. i wanna' have Katie Griffin back, and
Toby Proctor back too!!!! Anyone agree with me????

Well... considering the series is basically over and done with (there
might be a -slight- chance for a return, but I doubt it), it doesn't
make much of a difference anyway. ^_^;; However, I agree that those two
new voices are horrible. On the whole, the "new" episodes have the
worst voice acting in the entire series. The only actress who does a
good job is Mina's VA. I suppose that Amy's VA is okay, though I never
really liked her to begin with (chipmunks, anyone?). When I think of
the "new" eps, I always think of Final Battle (the last -real-
episode). Serena's VA sounds quite bad and doesn't do her Japanese
alter-ego character justice.

Actually, they were all taken into the back alley and shot, and the price
of the bullets was billed to DiC, who will more than likely use that as an
excuse to raise the prices of the (I'm using the term loosely) dubs in the
stores. (not like you ppl buy them anyway).

The top snipped paragraph is very true for me. I just happened to see
some "new" cartoon on TV one day and thought, "Hm..this looks
interesting." I hadn't thought too much about the series again until
recently when I caught SM on Cartoon Network when I took a day off from
work (I get home from work after 5pm and therefore never knew it came
on). Now I have a renewed interest in Sailor Moon and have been trying
to read all the episode summaries (in order of course!) I can find. But
without the inital exposure to the DiC episodes, I wouldn't have this
new "passion" in my life.

Now saying all that, I read the reply to the first paragraph...at this
time I guess I would consider myself a "dubbie". Simply because I've
ONLY seen the DiC dub. I enjoy the dubs very much. Why? I have yet to
see a "REAL" episode. I guess you can say I think hamburger is the best
meal in the world, simply because I have never had the chance to try
filet mignon. Don't worry, I mailed my order for subs yesterday and I
can't wait to see them.

But what I really wanted to say was Dave, give us dubbies a chance, it
takes some of us a while to become "enlightened" :)

I don't hear any difference in Raye. Darien needs Toby Proctor, the current
voice does NOT sound like Tux.

Got to definitely agree with you about Tux. Truly horrible. The new eps
would have been a hell of a lot better with Proctor.

I liked Raye's new VA, although I thought Katie Griffin was great.

I think Lita's voice was the best, as her VA made her look close to Mako
in character.

Mina? I think they could have used someone with a wacky voice. Mina is too
straight-laced compared to the froot-loop Minako.

As for Serena, I am in the minority who thought Tracey Moore was better
than Terri Hawkes.

I think that the casting director did a good job for a Raye replacement...I
didn't notice a difference until I noticed how she said a certain line and it
dawned on me.....But K.G. has a lot more feeling in her voice acting....

Hmm, a lot of North Americans say she seems very empty in the NA dub...
I think she sounds good. ^_^ She seems to have voice acting talent.

I wonder what Tracey Moore would have been like in Day of Destiny or

I sort of agree. I don't think I've ever heard a potted

Well... Tracey Moore wouldn't have sounded too young if she were speaking in
Japanese...

They did a good job getting the pitch close to the original, but high voices
don't really carry over well in English. It's almost impossible to take them
seriously.

Tracey Moore's voice did bug me a little though, I kept on seeing Princess
Toadstool every time she spoke ^_^;;;

I didn't much care for Proctor... although he probably would have been
better for those last episodes.

Ironically, I happen to think Vince Corazza (Alan/the new Tux) is a
better actor.

After listening to Tohru Furuya, though, they all seem... well... wrong.

> I liked Raye's new VA, although I thought Katie Griffin was great.

The new Raye sounded quite a bit like Katie Griffin, but for some reason
she just didn't sound very interesting. Mars didn't seem to be a very
noticeable character in the last 17 eps, I'm not sure if this was the
actor's fault or not.

> I think Lita's voice was the best, as her VA made her look close to Mako

I totally love Jupiter's NA voice, it's one of the few which I think is
truly believable.

> Mina? I think they could have used someone with a wacky voice. Mina is too

Has anyone noticed that Stephanie Morgenstern's voice actually sounds
very similar to Rica Fukami's? The main difference is, Fukami's voice
is slightly... um... squeakier. I think I agree with you there, but
I suspect that's more the fault of the directing than the acting.

She certainly sounds closer to the original. Not quite sure if she
had enough range to her... but she never really got the chance to show
it.

I thought Terri Hawkes was adequate before I started watching the
original. Now, listening to her after Kotono is highly disturbing.

In the last 17 episodes, she also sounds *way* too old.

This isn't really relevant, but I found it amusing. ^_^

scene: Final negative point. Wiseman floats above the sailor scouts,
weilding his crystal ball.

flows through it, sending a stream of energy at the scouts. They're not
able to move.*

tuxedo mask: psst, Terri, wake up!
Moon, groggy voice: Huh, what's that? ... Oh! No, um, no. I won't
let that happen. yadda yadda yadda. Could we PLEASE end this recording
session?! It's already midnight! I don't care if you need to send the
tape out to YTV tomorrow morning; I need my sleep! Okay, start the
tape recorder.
sound recorder man: We're rolling.
Moon: moon crystal power. death phantom, aaa, aaah. There, we're

For me, YTV and CHRO (Pembroke). Others are getting it now on local
stations in the US.

About the new voices (which I've not heard yet), I have one question
?

Did DiC change voice-actors on Amy ?
FWIW, I hope not ! I like that birdcall (chipmunk ) voice !!

Kotono was the Japanese voice-actress ?
I've been able to hear clips of the original. And, I have to
say, she sounds like a 4-yr-old, not 14-yr-old !!
Sm in Japanese sounded like my niece at four years of age :(

I don't agree with you, personally. I think Kotono sounded very very good as
Usagi.

Besides, a cute and innocent four-year-old is a much better image for Usagi
than the screechy whining Terri Hawkes version. A lot of the people I've talked
to who don't like Sailor Moon don't like it because of Serena.

I don't know who you're replying to... but many of us live in Canada.

In Japanese, it's pleasant for women to speak in a higher range than in
English. If any of my female friends spoke Japanese in the same pitch
as English, I wonder if it would even be slightly possible for them to
get a date with a Japanese non-English speaker. ^_^;;; BTW, you might
want to give the original a try. Most people feel that it's quite a lot
better.

This is a common pitch for girls her age in anime. Japanese women
generally sound higher than American women (IRL).
