01-- About the micro FAQ
----------------------------------------------------------------
01-A Basic Info ------------------------------------------------
The Micro FAQ is posted to alt.fan.sailor-moon on the 15th and 30th of the
month, and can be found on the web at:
http://www.geocities.com/willrobsm/afsm
The purpose of the micro FAQ, or uFAQ, is to lead new arrivals to the group
into the right direction and provide the regulars with a small, handy
resource of information about Sailor Moon and the group itself.
An update detailing changes and new information is posted to the group just
before the weekly posting of the uFAQ, in a separate thread, to keep those
who have read the uFAQ up to date.
It is important to note that the uFAQ is not intended to answer ALL
questions, just the most common ones. For more information about Sailor
Moon, try the FAQs and sites listed in section 06-A.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please mention the uFAQ to anyone who might need it.
Suggestions and corrections for the uFAQ are always welcomed.
01-B History of the micro FAQ ----------------------------------
The uFAQ was created in February 1997 by Rick Sammartino in an effort to
provide posting guidelines for the group as well as answer the many
questions specifically about alt.fan.sailor-moon which were all beyond the
scope of Ken Arromdee's huge Sailor Moon FAQ.
02-17-97 - Rick first posted the uFAQ to the group.
06-18-97 - The uFAQ became available as a website hosted by Henry D. Archut
(Racso) with Rick's approval.
12-09-98 - Rick asked Racso if he could take over the uFAQ as he no longer
had the time to give it the care it needed.
01-01-99 - Revision 2.0. Not many changes, Racso gave a little of his own
flavor to the uFAQ.
06-25-99 - Revision 3.0. Most of the uFAQ is re-written.
05-25-00 - I, Robert Maxwell, take over the uFAQ with Rick's consent, and
Racso's belated approval.
07-28-00 - Revision 4.0. The uFAQ is posted to AFSM for the last time and is
replaced by the AFSM FAQ and the Sailor Moon Reference Guide.
08-18-00 - Posted as AFSM FAQ for the first time after 5 revisions.
01-07-01 - Renamed to [AFSM] New User's Guide. Updated copyrights (English
and Kanji). Added "Welcome to Sailor Moon" link.
12-07-01 - New User’s Guide, Welcome to Sailor Moon, the Sailor Moon
Internet Guide, and the Sailor Moon Video Guide are merged back together and
restored as Revision 6.0 of the micro FAQ.
01-27-02 - Long overdue website links update started. a.b.p.s-m and two
other sites remain unknown. All others updated or deleted.
----------------------------------------------------------------
02-- Introduction to alt.fan.sailor-moon
----------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to Alt.Fan.Sailor-Moon.
This newsgroup was created by Ken Arromdee on July 25, 1995. Here is Ken's
Control Message which created the group:
http://www.geocities.com/willrobsm/afsm/cmsg_newgroup.htm
Within this group we discuss pretty much anything to do with the Japanese
anime Sailor Moon. This includes the original Japanese series, the North
American adaptation, the manga (comics), fanfics, conventions, and so on.
New people are always welcome, so please come in and make yourself at home.
AFSM can be one of the more active newsgroups, so if you want to keep up
with us, you'd better check back often. ^_^
If you are new here, keep in mind that you do not have to jump right in. It
is actually good practice with any newsgroup to simply lurk for a while in
order to get the feel of it, rather than just barging in. With any newsgroup
that you are new to, simply reading several posts will give you a pretty
good idea of how things go there.
When you feel comfortable, and you would like to make your presence known to
the group, then feel free to make an introduction post. It is up to you, you
can post a simple "Hi, I'm new", or you can post a full fledge intro telling
us a little about yourself and perhaps a bit about how you became interested
in Sailor Moon. We are always happy to know when new people arrive in the
group.
Although AFSM is not moderated, we as a whole ask that new arrivals please
follow the posting guidelines contained within this FAQ.
----------------------------------------------------------------
03-- General newsgroup Etiquette
----------------------------------------------------------------
The guidelines in this section are common in most discussion groups.
For primers and beginner information about Usenet, try the Usenet Info
Center Launch Pad: http://metalab.unc.edu/usenet-i/
----------------------------------------------------------------
03-A Binaries --------------------------------------------------
This is a 'discussion group', only text based posts are allowed. This means
no pictures, programs, word processing documents or HTML. There are many
reasons for this, but 2 main ones. First, Internet providers don't need to
provide a lot of space for discussion groups since they are intended to be
text based. If large binary files start appearing then there will be less
space available for the discussions, which tend to expire much sooner.
Second, some people's newsreaders either download the whole group at once or
their readers simply won't handle binaries. Either way, it is a great
inconvenience to them. This does not mean that we do not want to see your
pictures, we just prefer that you not post them to AFSM. Instead, either
post them to a binaries group, or place them into your own web space and
post a message to AFSM telling us where they are.

03-B Typing in all Caps ----------------------------------------
Typing in lower case is much more pleasant and easier to read. If you type
everything in upper case, people will think that you are yelling at them.
This applies to the Subject Line, also.
03-C Replying to posts -----------------------------------------
When replying to a post, you should quote the parts that you are referring
to so that people know what you're talking about.
Don't quote a big post and add only a line or two of your own. Edit the
quote to remove un-needed parts, but indicate that you did it. A common way
to do this is simply to put <snipped> where the text was, although the
signature of the quoted should _not_ be snipped or otherwise altered.
Replying to a post by simply saying "Me too" doesn't add anything to the
discussion. If the reason was to be added to a list, it's better to contact
the person directly by email.
Don't make it look like someone said something that they didn't, or that
someone else wrote what you're referring to.
If there are replies, read them before posting your own, as what you want to
say or ask may have already been done by someone else earlier.
If you are replying to a cross posted message, remove the groups that are
not necessary to your reply, if possible.
03-D Spam, Trolls, and misdirected posts ------------------------
Spam:
Spam is usually an ad of some kind for something that has nothing to do with
the group it is posted in.
Troll:
A troll is someone posting a message solely for the purpose of starting an
argument. They often cross post messages to groups that have nothing to do
with each other just to start a flame war between them. You have no idea how
easily it is done. It would be far more difficult for them if everyone would
ignore such posts.
Misdirected Posts:
These are sent by people, for example, who want to talk about sailboats.
It is in our best interest not to reply to such posts, this way they will
disappear from our group faster. Replying to Trolls only encourages them to
post more. No matter how funny you think your reply might be, please just
let it go.
As SuperSteve said when he left the group...
"'abuse@server' is the ultimate answer to trolls, not replying."
03-E Test Posts -----------------------------------------------
If you need to test your newsreader or server, please use a test group
rather than AFSM: alt.test
03-F Brackets, [ ] ---------------------------------------------
Many posts use text within brackets to identify special kinds of posts. This
helps people find certain posts, as well as ignore others. There are
examples of these below in section 04-G.
----------------------------------------------------------------
04-- Posting Guidelines for alt.fan.sailor-moon
----------------------------------------------------------------
04-A Posting to AFSM -------------------------------------------
All posts in this group should be Sailor Moon related in some way. If a
thread drifts away from the topic of 'Sailor Moon', it should then be marked
[OT]. This lets people know that the post is about something other than
Sailor Moon. Many people use the [OT] indicator to filter out off-topic
posts, so please only use [OT] and not things like: [Sorta-OT], [99% OT],
[OTish], otherwise their newsreaders will not filter them out.
Try to refrain from cross-posting. If you reply to a message that was
cross-posted, remove the groups that are not necessary.
04-B Language and Subject Matter -------------------------------
There are a lot of younger readers in this group. Although it is not
moderated, please try to remain civilized. If you write something with
strong language, or with sexual insinuations, please mark the subject with a
rating: [PG-13], [R].
04-C X-rated or Hentai Sailor Moon -----------------------------
There are fan made X-rated images of Sailor Moon on the Web. This group
neither condones nor opposes it. Please don't discuss this subject here. For
such discussion, try either of these:
alt.hentai.sailor-moon
alt.binaries.hentai.sailor-moon
alt.sex.fetish.sailor-moon
04-D Spoiler info ----------------------------------------------
If asking about, or referring to, any episode or manga where you might give
away some of the story, you *MUST* place this, [Spoilers] in the header
along with your topic. DO NOT put spoiler information in your topic. It is
also helpful to put:
S
P
O
I
L
E
R
S
P
A
C
E
before your spoiler information. The whole point to this is, so that people
who don't want to know what happens in the story, before they get a chance
to see it, don't. Remember, people are becoming fans of Sailor Moon every
day, give them a chance to see it unspoiled, especially with the new dub
seasons currently unfolding.
Spoilers include all major plot points and season endings. Generally, if
it's a major event, then it's a spoiler. If it's something that you saw or
heard about, as it pertains to the story, that made you SO excited that you
couldn't wait to talk about it, then it's probably a spoiler.
04-E Requesting info ------------------------------------------
There is a good chance that whatever you have to ask about has already been
asked countless times before on this group.
There are places where you can find info a lot faster than asking on AFSM,
here are a few:

http://www.geocities.com/willrobsm/smfaq.htm
The Sailor Moon Miscellany FAQ:

Google - Search the web:
http://www.google.com/index.html
Try searching Usenet for answers to your other questions:
Google Groups:
http://groups.google.com/
The purpose of providing you with these other options is to make you aware
of faster ways to find the info you need as it can take time for someone to
answer you on AFSM.
When you do post a request on AFSM, remember to be polite and do not use
caps. Never demand an answer. The nicer you are, the more likely people will
try to help you out.
04-F Trolls ------------------------------------------------------
It can not be stressed enough: Do not reply to trolls.
04-G Indicators used on AFSM -------------------------------------
When writing an identifier or indicator, please remember to use brackets and
not parentheses or anything else. Doing so will help the people who filter
certain kinds of posts.
------------------------------------------------------------------
[AFSM]
Use this when your post is about the people in the group itself.
[eBay], [FA]
For sale on eBay or another auction website.
[Fanfic]
This identifies that this post is a story based on Sailor Moon, written by a
fan.
[FSC]
"Future Sailor Cabinet". A long running, original Sailor Moon parody:
http://westwood.fortunecity.com/hermes/490/fsc/
[FS], [FT], [FS/T], [WTT]
For sale and/or trade.
[MSOC]
Mad Scientist Otaku Cabal.
[News]
If you see new information (not rumour) about Sailor Moon.
Please check to see if your news has been posted earlier, before you post
it.
[OW!]
Otaku Wars! For more info, see section 05-A below.
[OT]
off-topic. Anything you post that is not about Sailor Moon or AFSM should be
marked with this indicator.
**Please remember that posts are either on-topic or off-topic, not in
between, not almost, not 99% this way or that way. Your post is either one
way or the other, so please do not use things like: [Sorta-OT], [99% OT],
[OTish], etc. This is asked because many people use [OT] to filter out
off-topic posts, if you use anything other than [OT], the filters won't
catch it.
[PG-13], [R]
Shows that the content of the post isn't for younger readers.
[POLL]
A poll obviously. This is to gather the preferences and opinions of those on
the newsgroup. It's also a great way to generate more discussion. All are
welcome to respond.
[PSA]
Public service announcement.
[RANT]
A (usually very long) essay-like post or complaint.
[Update]
the weekly FAQ update information posting.
[WWW]
Web page announcements, URL updates etc.
[WTB]
Wanted to buy. Request for information.
[make your own]
If you don't see an identifier that suits you, make up your own. Keep it as
short as possible and be sure to use brackets: [ ].

05-- Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------------------------------------------
05-A [OW!] Otaku Wars! What is it, and how do I join? ----------
Essentially, the OtakuWars! is the ultimate, on going parody of the many
arguments between Sailor Moon fans over which of the Sailor Senshi is truly
the best. Each character within the Otaku Wars is loosely based on his or
her author. The Otaku Warriors are banded together in factions like
'Amichanians' and 'Minakochanians'. The factions fight each other in
humorous and often illogical ways to be the victorious faction and to prove
that their Senshi is the best.
Of course things are not always so simple, as individuals within these
factions are often plotting with their own agendas in mind. Also there comes
unexpected alliances and almost always some kind of outside threat that the
warring Otaku must deal with. After reading a few OW! posts you might find
yourself hooked on the always developing story and crazy Monty Python like
humor.
It all started back on January 26, 1997 when Jet Wolf, a fan of Hino Rei,
stated that she was "secretly plotting to topple the Empire of Ami Fans."
Belial, who just so happened to be an Ami fan, mocked Jet Wolf's statement.
It was basically started out as your typical "Who is the best Sailor Senshi"
argument, until a Minakochanian Warship fired a video tape into the ground
between Belial and Jet Wolf. Thus began the wars.
Anyone can join the OtakuWars! so long as you can write in a humorous
manner, and follow a few other rules as outlined in the OW! FAQ.
Below are links to the OW! FAQ and a Writer's Guide:

More related pages are listed below in section 06-G.
There are two other fan-fiction groups that occasionally post to
alt.fan.sailor-moon:
Mad Otaku Scientist Cabal [MSOC] is a semi-role-playing /
semi-goofing-off-together group with a shared interest in not just mad
science and mad scientists but learning and intellectual pursuits in
general. Role-playing sessions, when they are held, consist of more-or-less
spontaneous plotlines played out using a combination of our own characters
and mad scientists borrowed from various anime. (Our staff includes such
noted minds as Tomoe Souichi and Habuki Washuu, among others.)
When not engaged in role-playing, the MSOC communicate primarily via an
email mailing list and the IRC channel.
For more information on MSOC, please go to their website:
http://www.crosswinds.net/~tsouichi/
Neo Future Sailor Cabinet is a parody fan-fiction based loosely on the
Sailor Moon anime, created by Takeuchi Naoko. It started its run in October
1999 on the newsgroup, and it's still going strong with three major stories
and another in progress as of this writing. Approximately four authors have
written stories so far. They are continually posted to the newsgroup upon
completion.

05-B Moonie Code - What is it, and how do I use it or decode it? ---
Created by Tolaris, the Moonie Code is a way of describing your personal
feelings towards the series to others. Many posters have it included in
their sig, but it is not required to have one in order to post. The code
looks similar to this...

08-- Fansubs / Fandubs
----------------------------------------------------------------
08-A About Subs and Dubs ---------------------------------------
A fandub or fansub is a copy of an original anime release that has either
been dubbed into another language, or given subtitles in another language.
These copies are made by fans for fans and are not for sale or rent. Any
prices mentioned should be strictly for the cost of the blank tape shipping,
and a little extra for other related costs. Below is a short list of places
where you obtain copies of fansubs and fandubs.
Please beware of bootleggers. These are people making copies of fansubs and
selling them for jacked up prices. Often they remove from the copy whatever
details they can of who actually subbed, and/or originally distributed the
tapes.
Most online bootlegging happens on auctions like 'eBay' http://www.ebay.com/
. You can also find over-priced copies at your local comic shop or video
rental.
The distributors listed below are the real deal, you can make requests from
these people with confidence in their pricing.

09-- Sailor Moon Videos and DVDs
----------------------------------------------------------------
The first two seasons of Sailor Moon began their release on November 21,
2000 with the first eight English-dubbed episodes (4 per video tape) from
ADV Films. These tapes contain episodes previously unreleased on video*. No
DVDs or subtitled versions are planned of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R.
They are scheduled to be released two tapes per month for a total of 82
episodes (20½ tapes).
The next two seasons (SM S and SM SuperS) started releasing February 6, 2001
by Pioneer Video. Pioneer is releasing these in three formats: English
dubbed and edited VHS; Japanese Dialogue with English subtitles VHS; and on
DVD with both the edited English dub and the un-cut subtitled versions. Like
ADV Films, they will be released two tapes/DVDs every other month.
There are currently no plans for the final season (Sailor Moon Sailor Stars,
or simply "Stars") to be dubbed. The primary rights holder for Sailor Moon
in North America is Cloverway, a division of Toei Animation, the producer of
the original Japanese Language anime.
* In 1997, Buena Vista, a division of Disney, released 6 two-episode tapes
of selected first season episodes and later a box set of the "Doom Tree" arc
from SMR. These previously released episodes will be re-released as part of
ADV Films package.
Please note that "previously not released" means first and second season
episodes not already released by Buena Vista, it doesn’t mean the handful of
skipped episodes from those seasons.

10-- Acronyms, Slang, Emoticons, et cetra

On occasion you may encounter words or symbols you will not recognize. Some
of it will be acronyms, romaji (translated Japanese), slang of various
types, or emoticons. Collectively, they may be thought of as AFSM-speak. A
