Funny, they're allowed to show an actual killing (those two mobile suited
soldiers that Heero wasted) but not allowed to say it? :) Besides, "kill"
has been pretty much standard in the new DBZ episodes...
But all in all, I was pleasantly surprised for the respect they had for the
original material- I saw my fansubbed episode 1 afterwards for comparison,
and pretty much _all_ but that one line were faithful, as far as I could
tell, which is the polar opposite of the English Sailor Moon dub. :) Not to
mention the same orig. music, eyecatch, and even episode title screen...
I hope Bandai teaches Dic a few lessons in how to handle an anime dub for US
television.

First of all, Toonami has never used the original OP sequences (Japanese or
American) for their shows. Why were you expecting something different? Me, I
was pleasantly surprised to see that the ending theme is an instrumental
version of "Just Communication" with clips from the original OP. Actually, I
prefer it to the original ending, which had that saccharine song and Relena the
Beast Master. x_x
Besides, the first episode is relatively tame, in terms of content. As the
series develops, I'm sure that there will be even greater differences between
the cut and uncut versions in the future. So if you want to bitch about
changes, just sit on your ass for a few weeks. I'm sure something will come
up.
Both versions
-feature above-average voicework, with few exceptions
-use all the original names
-use the original background music and sound effects
-use the original title screens, with Japanese writing
-use the original eyecatches
-use the original previews
Compared to other made-for-TV dubs, Gundam Wing is looking pretty damn good
right now. And Cartoon Network even called it "anime" in their commercials.
When most companies try to make their dubbed anime seem as American as
possible, that's a major accomplishment. What are you complaining about? If
anything, you should be happy. The lack of major changes mean that even the
_edited_ version remained mostly intact.

is a pun on both "scythe" and "god", depending on how you read the name.

lucky here; we have one of the rare dub actors who has gotten his
character DOWN on the very first syllable. He could double for
Midorikawa, and that's just unheard of. Now if Paul Dobson(?) can just
settle into Duo's role properly...*crosses fingers, misses the godlike
Seki*.
Anyone else think they should have switched Wufei and Trowa's actors? Too
early to tell yet, I know....

i do believe it's Scott McNeil, as he can do a variety of voices like Dobson
can. I did sound in the range of Piccolo(DBZ seasons 1 and 2) and
Rattrap(Beast Wars).

But Duo calls himself "Shinigami," not "Deathscythe." The original episode
title was "Shinigami something something" (referring to Duo, the pilot), but
the translation only made reference to the "Deathscythe" (the Gundam).
But I'm being really picky here. It could have been sooo much worse.

Er...the kanji used in the episode title was definitely "Death God." The
Japanese for "scythe" is "gai." The "gai" character has no alternate
pronounciations, and the "gami" kanji cannot be pronounced "gai," so I doubt
there's a pun.

His delivery of that line in the uncut version was absolutely perfect, just
like the original. He sounded like he had ice in his blood.

According to the official GW manga, his name in kana is "KATORU RABAABA UINAA."
The pronunciation used in the dub is closer to the original French
pronounciation of "quatre."

Personally, I prefer "I will destroy you" to "I will kill you". "I will
kill you" sounds better when said in the heat of passion, while "I will
destroy you" is more methodical - more chilling - more appropriate for

Fortunately, the blood was there in the uncut version. Hell, there was the
entire bit where we find out that Heero broke through one of the restraints
by _himself_ and his wrist and everything was all covered with blood.
I think that marks the first time there's a difference in the actual footage
of the episodes.

No, Trowa isn't my favorite, either. But dub Duo is really starting to grow on

I'm not sure about her yet. I wasn't too enthralled, but I also don't
think it's fair for me to judge a dub actor in the first episode. (Give
'em two, THEN toast them. Heh heh.) To be fair, she has a somewhat
different persona at Mengele General Hospital than in later episodes.

suppose it's reasonable that anyone would yelp a bit when getting skin
abraded off during a thirty-foot roll down jagged rocks. But this is

someone...normal. I love the way he stands up in utter silence. So

Since a couple of people, and you know who you are, actually requested it,
here goes. I should say that I am a) a Chibi-Usa fan and b) I l... I l...
I'm starting to like Relena, okay? And THOSE are words I thought would
never cross my keyboard, considering all the "Heero and Duo are Eternal
Lovers and Relena is the Antichrist" GW fanfics that were my introduction
to the cast.
Similarities Between Chibi-Usa and Relena
Both are evidently quite intelligent, yet lack the common sense God gave a
rock.
An unholy obsession with the color pink. (Have you seen that limo?)
They have terribly sugary-sweet personas that belie the cold steel
underneath.
Both are totally fixated on unobtainable men.
Both go where angels fear to tread, and are unutterably, stupidly,
incredibly brave.
They have this strange, fixed glazed look in their eyes. Especially when
being obsessive. Which is most of the time.
Both have raised stalking to a fine art, and appear out of nowhere at the
damndest time, scaring the bejezus out of the rest of the cast.
They have sweet, thoughtful, introverted moments, but when they start
getting pitbullish and yelling, they are SCARY.
Both have seiyuu screams that could shatter glass.
SPOILERS FOR _GUNDAM W_
Both become Queen of the World.
Both have distinctly unorthodox relationships with their parents,
involving parental separation and misdirection.
Any other additions to this list are gladly welcomed, whether or not you
loathe and despise these characters.

Haven't heard the JP voice, but her American VA is really good. So far she's
made Relena my favorite character. Although Dou is catching up fast.

I've started writing down observations as I watch the episode. Unfortunetly,
I have no idea what some of my notes were refering to. O.o;;
Did Vice Minister Dorlan [sic] sound like he had an accent to anyone else?
Relena's groupies were still Tomoyo-caliber obsessive. :D
Une's "You idiot!" was _wonderful_. Magnificent presentation.

that on children's television. ^.^
Quatre's "Friend Trowa" made me think of Asimov's Robot Chronicles. Anyone
else? ^.^
I like Wufei's VA, but his speach still seems a little halting. I guess I'll
get used to it... Zechs and Noin, I'm liking better. Zechs' VA seems to be
settling into the role.

rebel guys... they need names, this is hard. ~.~ Anyhow, the main one needs
to emote. He was pretty bland through the whole dying thing. Also, the blond
one who was arguing with Relena -- did anyone else think he sounded kinda
like Ryouga?

Couldn't tell. Maybe very slightly. Was that David Kaye doing his voice?
Nice job, and I thought his speech to Relena was a bit less heavy-handed
than the original as far as sheer voice went.
But the guys working for him...bleah. Emote! Emote! Still think Relena
should have fired the idiots on the spot. "You killed my father. I hate
you all. You're fired for utter incompetence and give me that damn gun,
NOW!"

They're still disturbing and still passing around the communal brain cell,
but I think they're less annoying than in the original. They don't squeal
like a flock of rabid seagulls on helium, at least. I think the lack of
honorifics helps here too for me. "Relena-sama! Relena-sama!" just
sounds *far* too cloying to my ears.

I was trying to figure out if Brad Swaile had picked up on any subtext or
not. Trowa was good here, I thought, Quatre I'm not so sure about. A
little Valley Boy, maybe? And I'm still used to a more androgynous voice,
but that's hardly Brad's fault.

Wufei's voice actor sounds more like what I thought Wufei would sound like
before I saw the series than his original seiyuu does. (Does that
sentence parse?!)
Noin is great. Zechs I've either gotten used to or he's toned way back on
the "villain voice", I'm not sure which. I'm much happier with Duo's
voice than I was before. I actually howled out loud with laughter at both
showings in ep 4 when Heero left so precipitously in Wing Gundam. God,
that was good. Great script, great acting.

I always knew the good doctor was off his rocker, but somehow the dub
brought it home that he's INSANE! Psycho! Admittedly, so's everyone else
in the series, but...brrr.
I have never understood his comment about Relena's eyes. She doesn't have
peaceful, innocent eyes, she has psychotic, hard eyes. Just like Heero,
true, but it's not quite what Dr. J said.

They're doing it constantly during the midnight run, and it's getting
really annoying. I was sorry to hear it at 5:30 as well. *sigh mutter*
I saw for the first time that Relena has a little tear track down her left
cheek in the very last shot on the shuttle. Poor baby! (And I never
thought I would type *those* words in reference to her either).

Great performance. She plays her like a friggin' snakewhich is exactly what
she is. She's the one character in anime that I love to hate.

I think it's very appropriate that the voice of Kuno also does Wufei here.
No doubt the sense of arrogance and chauvinism in Kuno helped out a bit.

Is it me, or is dub Duo getting a lot of the best dialog? Personally, I
loved his reaction to Heero setting his own broken bones, and his reference
to "Evil Knievel".^_^

Right now I'm a RIBber.
Ya know, I didn't hate Relena as much as I expected to. In fact, I don't
hate her at all. Of course, I've only seen the dub Relena, so that
brings up the question.
Is the original Relena so much different from the dub one (sure, the
lines are the same, but they might be said differently) or have I just
not seen enough or might I actually like Relena? (Or at least be neutral
towards her, as I am now.)
