Since there are 1,700 A.F.S-M messages to read, I won't go into too much
detail on what I saw/learned/bought there until I get them all read. Here's
the highlights:
Mixx will be dropping Sailor Moon from MixxZine and replacing it with Gundam
starting with the next issue (2-2). At the same time, they will be starting to
release the remaining Sailor Moons in the original and R series in a comic
book format (monthly?) Mixx made up 3,500 of these as a special run for Comic
Con. The special run has a solid pink cover and has a silver metallic crescent
moon and star. I think the retail price will be $2.95 (the convention price
was that).
Mixx will be releasing the S(?) series starting in Smile. They did not have a
sample of the issue or have even the contents list yet.
Mixx will be releasing all the Sailor Moon series in the pocket manga format,
in addition to the other two books.
Naoko Takeuchi had two signings. Mixx planned to have one the first day
(Thursday) at 2:00 at their booth, but were moved to the regular signing area.
They had the regular signing after her Friday panel. I got my Art Book 1
signed there. I estimated 300 people at the first signing, but Stu said he
thought it was 600 at each signing. My estimate was probably better, but maybe
too high. She signed for about an hour and a half on Thursday. She appeared to
be tired near the end of the line, where I was.
At the panel, she answered some questions.
All the Senshi are female (in all forms).
Haruka and Michiru are in love.
There will be no more Sailor Moon manga or anime.
She asked us if we were interested in witchcraft (so this may be her new
manga series).
Hopefully, Aaron will have some more notes on the panel.
Takeuchi-san left for Japan
I met Widya Santosa, Herbie Garcia and Aaron Maupin from alt.fan.sailor-moon
there. Aaron does not look French.
I made up several hundred (300? 400?) of Rei's spell paper strips and
distributed them to people at the first signing and several other places
around the convention. I was wearing one attached to my badge, and noticed
several of them being worn by others throughout the convention. I saw two of
the staff wearing them. I had a lot of people ask me about the one I was
wearing. Before the convention, I priced custom post-it notes with the design
on them as about $1.00 per pad of 50. Anyone seeing pictures of her signing,
look to see if they are in any of the pictures.
I gave out something (I forget what) to a very excited young fan at Mixx's
table (she was also the first in line at the first signing). I gave out two
plastic Sailor Moon pencil boxes to a couple of people in the line at the
signing, and one to Tavicat ("Reality Check"), a Sailor Moon fan. I was
planning on giving one of my Ami with Luna UFO Catcher dolls to the best
Sailor Moon costume there, but decided to give it to the Best Young Fan Anime
(for reasons which will become apparent). I probably gave out some other stuff
from my Bag-O-Stuff, but I don't remember what. The bag grew by several other
items I bought at the con.
Oh, yes. I also gave a chibi Tuxedo Kamen keychain to Apollo Smile, when I saw
a Haruka pencil box on her table at the con.
I bought 15 of the pink Sailor Moon comic books, 5 at $5.00 each, and 10 at
$2.95 later. I gave one of them to Tavicat. I will have several of them left
over after I give them to my friends. I'll probably have another contest or
two for the rest.
The masquerade.
There were several Sailor Moon entries there this year, including the Scot.
Here are the Sailor Moon winners in this morning's newsletter:
Trophy for Best"Sailor Moon" Award: "Angus McLune and the Sailor Scot." Worn
by Widya Santosa; designed by Widya Santosa, Leslie How and Mom. Yes, he is a
man. He had a full Scottish highlander-type uniform. He had a Sailor Moon
Crescent Wand. I didn't see the presentation he did, because I was in the
photographers' area. I did get some pictures of him. If they come out, I may
post some in one of the binaries groups (in a couple weeks), if they aren't
already posted somewhere else.
Kimono My House for best Japanimation: 1st place: "Angus McLune and the Sailor
Scot."
SyCo Distribution: Best anime costume: "Angus McLune and the Sailor Scot."
SyCo Distribution: Anime Third Place: "The Three Lights." Designed and worn by
Kim Lim, Alice Edwards and Connie Chow.
SyCo Distribution: Best Young Fan Anime: "Sailor Neptune." Worn by Angel
Bathal; designed by Nancy Laur, Timeless Productions.
More after I finish reading the backed-up newsgroup messages (about 5,000).

Wonder how long it had been since she arrived in the US -- I was kind
of worried visitors would get treated to a jet-lagged Naoko in a daze...
What alphabet did she use signing? Romaji? If so, it was probably much
more tiring for her than it would have been for any of us.

Means we can start up the old discussions of just *what* Endymion is

Not too unexpected.

Ah, so the old Wiccan threads weren't that OT after all! ^_^
Probably no more PQA, then (unless she's thinking of taking P-ko and Q-ko
in entirely new directions..). Well, after it failed to appear in April that wasn't
too unexpected either. I just wish we'd get to know how she'd planned on
ending the story. (Didn't anybody at the panel *ask* her about PQ Angels?)

I did not write down the individual questions and answers, though another
member of SOS wrote down the most interesting ones. I was glad to see the
Haruka/Michiru thing addressed. Naoko described them as lovers, and joked
that, compared to the other sailor senshi, they have more free time.
(Everyone laughed.)
My impressions:
I was largely disappointed with Naoko Takeuchi's question and answer
session. Naoko did not always speak into the microphone, and neither did
Stu Levy when translating questions from English to Japanese for her. So
for many questions all the audience heard was Stu answering. Those of us
who speak Japanese would have liked to have heard everything, ESPECIALLY
Naoko. I would say that half the time Naoko's words were not broadcast.
This was my biggest gripe.
At first there was no microphone available for the audience to use when
asking questions. A bit later it was decided to bring individuals on
stage to ask questions (a good idea). By the end a wireless microphone
had been found. There seemed to be little technical preparation for the
event, and many people were upset by this and shouting wisecracks.
At the end of the panel the first episode of DIC's dub, "A Moon Star is
Born," was projected onto the video screens. A rare treat for all
present, surely. I left along with almost everyone else to try and make
my way down to the autograph line in the exhibition hall. I didn't make
it. Those in costume were asked by Stu to stay upstairs to pose for
pictures with Naoko. They waited around for a long time while nothing
happened, and finally went downstairs to discover that they couldn't get
Naoko's autograph because the line was chained off. That was really sad
because a lot of effort went into the costumes. The language of sailors
could be heard at this time.
I am not ingrateful for Naoko Takeuchi's appearance, but I think it could
have been handled better.
> I met Widya Santosa, Herbie Garcia and Aaron Maupin from
> alt.fan.sailor-moon there.
Meetings like these were the best part of Comic-Con for me. It's really
cool to see what people look like in person, to put a face to the "image"
you have built up in your mind previously. Besides Jerry, Widya, and
Herbie, I also met many SOS members that I had only emailed or spoken to
on the phone. Friendship is what Sailor Moon is all about, so nothing
beats making new friends!
> Aaron does not look French.
;) Widya said the same thing, so I guess it's official.
> I made up several hundred (300? 400?) of Rei's spell paper strips and

I saw many more after you gave me mine - guess I wasn't looking for them
before. And I got lots of questions about what the strip was, and
a.f.s-m.
Similarly many people were wearing the SOS badge I created, which made me
happy. I passed out quite a few, as did others in SOS. Many Sailor Moon
fans already had them, which also made me happy. They seemed to be
everywhere Friday night. Everyone I talked to who found out I was in the
"core group" of SOS had nice things to say.
Friday night there was a general SOS get-together at the Horton Plaza. I
got to meet Stella Paredes, a great person who collected more offline
petitions than anyone else in San Diego. Many other cool people were
there - I wish I could remember everyone's names that I met.

> There were several Sailor Moon entries there this year, including the Scot.
I enjoyed this more than any of the panels. The Scot was THE crowd
pleaser of the masquerade, and in my opinion deserved even more awards and
praise than he received. Way to go Widya!
All in all I attended seven panels at Comic-Con (the rest of the time I
was meeting friends, eating, and wandering the exhibition hall). The best
was the John Carpenter Vampires panel - the worst was the 75th Anniversary
of Weird Tales panel. Though to be honest the Naoko Takeuchi panel was
the most disappointing. At least the Weird Tales panel had Forrest J.
Ackerman telling cool stories.
The only autograph I got was Reggie Bannister's, and I was very happy to
talk to him for a long time about the Phantasm movies and his music. He
asked if I was a musician (not really, though I play the trombone and
seven years ago I was in a techno-industrial group) so I had to tell him
about my current musical project, which is a techno tribute to Alby
Mangels' adventures in Brazil.

Now I can dwelve into the meat of this. First of all anyone who has
attended AnimeExpo, AnimeCentral or any other anime con that has Japanese guests
knows this is not the practice. IT is not even standard practice at San Diego
Comic Con.
I can give you my feelings on where it stems from and you can accept it or not.
These are NOT Ron Scovil's words lets make that clear.
Stuart does not have any respect at all for anime and Sailor Moon fans. You are
all a bunch of crazy freaks who don't speak Japanese and as such should be there
to meet and hear Stuart. You should only be thinking about getting Sailor Moon
from Mixx. You want the Japanese and scripts how dare you! You want the names
to be left alone how dare you! You have to want the version given to you by
Mixx!
If you follow the threads on other boards after cons like Otakon you would know
that this isn't an exageration.
A friend of mine was standing in the Mixx booth talking to an intern asking where
I was. And he overheard "Stu saying he would not attend any anime con that
didn't make HIM a Guest of Honor. Scott Frazier is a guest If I am not one I
won't go With so many anime cons out there who needs them."
first of all Scott Frazier is in the anime industry in Japan and helps out all
of the cons get guests US and Japanese and futhermore Scott does how to's and
such at cons and is an attendance draw. No one goes to a con just to see Mixx.
This arrogance and insult is unforgivable. Scott and I are friends and will
remain so. Any person at any anime con will tell you how much of a help Scott
is to any con he becomes involved with and attends.
Anime Fans are in for a rude awakening.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kodocha/index.html
This page was created after Stu had threatened a fan subbing group and trashed
subtitling of Anime at Otakon a week before San Diego.
There are at least 11 boycotts I am now aware that are organizing including one
right on Mixx's own webboard that no one on the staff that works full time reads.
It is kind of insulting. People are not being listened to by the methods that
were put in place to hear them And now their opinions really do not mean a
thing as long as you are getting their dollars.
It is a shame.

If you had people pulled from line a common courtesy would have been to get them
an autograph or something right their. People are not their for the
entertainment of anyone They should have been respected more.

else baclk in the 80s. Jerry is a real special and nice person.

I was there 3 hours before she started on friday. Was one of the first
50 people. I'm just glad that I wasnt at the back of the line. It was
sad when they closed the line to get her autograph. Saw lots of
unhappy faces.

I think its kinda ironic that the amount of people expected to show up to see
Naoko(what was that 1,000-1,400??) was said to be low when they actually had to
cut the autograph line short because there were so many people. To think that
if more showed up, there would have been more sad faces.

I have just brought that pink comic book yesterday at a comic book
store. Did they say that this comic book would also go out to retailers?
I was at my comic dealer yesterday (and gave him a copy). He already had
information on the comic. The regular Sailor Moon Comic will be released
through Diamond to comic book stores. It will have a Sailor Moon-type cover.
The one with the pink cover was a "special exclusive comicon '98 edition" with
a limited print run (3,500?). Diamond (I think) distributed it to the dealers
at Comic Con. It was all over the place there. There were enough left at
dealers' tables on Sunday that I think you may see them in several stores.

It's not uncommon in Japan. Using given names (with whatever suffix)
generally implies a level of close familiarity, and Japanese seldom use it
with others than their family or their closest friends. This especially goes
for males, including in school -- Mamoru's classmates most likely address
him "Chiba-kun", for example. This rule isn't as strict about girls, but once
they enter High School -- as they do in Stars -- the proper form of address
would be "Tsukino-san", "Mizuno-san", etc. (Not that anime characters
are known for behaving properly... They are close enough friends to use
given names among themselves, of course.)
BTW, this also goes for Umino. His name is 'Umino Gurio', so Umino is
his family name, but everyone, even Naru, calls him "Umino-kun".
