Why I hate Sailor Mars

moonie who's only seen the ameircan series. I know that in Japanese or English
Rei is a first class grade A bitch. And Ihave reasons to back it up...
1. She's mean. She's constantly making fun of Usagi, telling her she's dumb, a
failure, etc. If she were smart she'd know that Usagi is truly trying the
best she can...
2. She's a hypcrite. In the first episode Haruka showed up, she teases Usagi
aand Minako aboput being boy crazy. Then the minute Minako and USagi said they
spotted a "handsome man," they turned out to be just az boy crazy.
3. She's a snot. She thinks about no one but herself and before she doesn
anything she thinks first and formost about whether or not it'll make HER look
bad. Like in the episode when she was in charge of running her school
festival. She bascially set the whole thing up to showcase herself. And we're
suppoed to feel sorry for her when a monster comes and ruins it all! No, we're
supposed to be pissed that the monster didn't cut her to bits!
In conclusion, I hate Rei, and I think she shoul be burned at the stkae by one
of her own attacks,,

That's the kind of friendship they've had..Since you do know the original, then you
must have seen the inner senshi death scenes in the 1st and SailorStars series plus
when she conforts Usagi in the end of R and the R movie...She shows her friendship
in moments like that. I have a lot of close friends that I constantly bicker with,
but it's fun. Plus, Rei also does this to try to get Usagi to be her very best,
IMHO.

That is a part of her character...She's very vain, and it's a flaw. It's sort of
like saying you don't like Ami because she has no self-confidence. All characters
have dominant traits that making them unique from the others. I can identify with
her on the R ep...She worked extremely hard and was actually hiding the fact that
composing all that music really wore her out and played on her emotions...Then she
gave her all at the performance and tatters all her hard work, it's a real
upsetting blow.

Well, you're allowed to have your own opinion about characters...But you haven't
mentioned anything beyond S...so does that mean you haven't actually seen her in
the last two series?...There's a lot to observe there...

It really isn't much of a friendship. I could see, maybe if she were nicer to
Usagi a bit more, but she isn't! She MEANS what she says. Thats the difference.
She's jealous of Usagi, and she takes it out on her by calling her names and
bringing her down. She may have those "nice" moments, but all the other times
she's mean. Its a horrible mistake to make them best friends. They don't
relate.

I don't think Usagi *is* the best she can be. And Rei knows it. Like
many other people, I think that Rei loves Usagi, deeply and intensely
and is VERY frustrated that Usagis is suach a lazy person. Rei has gone
through years of discipline that has sharpened her skills and she feels
that, as their leader, Usagi could at least pretend to try.
When my friends fail to live up to their potentials, I'm the same way,
so I sympathize. :-)

Ah, the anime Rei is indeed a hypocrite. You'll excuse me if i rely on
the manga Rei for a more objective, aloof position. :-) I think the
writers just wanted most of the audience (projected as 10-14 yr old
girls) to sympathize with the senshi, thus their never-ending quest for
boiufrendo.

I absolutely do not agree with this. Usagi said this, but I think she
was jealous. Rei's behavior does not bear this out, wither. She was
perfectly willing to make a place for her friends at the festival and
she actually showcased Tono-san, not herself.

I felt that the whole point of the ep was to allow her and Usagi and
quiet moment, in which they could bond, then to allow them to fight
Eudial and the daimon together.

That is precisely the reason she *is* mean to Usagi - because she
*doesn't* feel that Usagi is worthy of herself! Rei respects Usagi so
much that she thinks Usagi is capable of *much* better than she
usually acts. She only wants to whip Usagi into shape so that she can
be all that she's able. That's my view of it anyway.

Hypocracy, in this context, is endearing. Hypocracy is a flaw and
flaws are human. If you met someone who was flawless of character,
you'd probably be bored and you certainly wouldn't find much appeal in
them. When someone makes a mistake or demonstrates a character flaw
it serves only to reveal their humanity.

Um yes, well anyway. Rei is one of those friends that we could
probably all use who is almost viciously honest and will not pull her
punches when she's got something that needs saying. Who would you
rather have - a wishy washy opinionless friend who will quietly watch
you let yourself down, or a strong willed friedn who cares enough to
give you hell when you need it? Well, I know which I'd prefer. I
have a friend who is fiercely honest, almost to a fault, but at least
I never have to question whether or not he gives a toss.
Rei is like that.

You do realize that someone can be perfectly nice to someone--praise them
constantly and so forth--and not necessarily be doing it out of friendship,
but perhaps for personal gain? Well, reverse that.
Rei does not complain about Usagi's faults out of spite, she does it in an
effort to get Usagi to improve them. Usagi sums it up nicely in episode 90,
so hurry up and watch it. :)
... R movie wouldn't hurt either.

I, Trixie, am not up to putting up a very good argument right now, but..
feebly I will try... Lay off of Rei. She's actually a very nice person.

Rei takes her duties very seriously. She wants Usagi to do this also since
it is very important they succeed. She's willing to have Usagi mad at her
in order to make Usagi a success. What they are trying to do is very
important, so what Rei is doing is a good thing. In that Rei and Usagi
become good friends, I believe that Usagi sees Rei's good intentions. She
also knows that she can always rely on Rei... that's worth putting up with
Rei's temper a hundred times over.

I don't even understand what you are talking about. It seems like you're
talking about Usagi and Minako being boy crazy and Rei making a comment on
it. Yeah, we've seen Rei get interested in boys, too. Well, they're all
teenage girls.. go figure...

She sang all those songs, but there were a lot of other things going on at
her festival. Rei's friends noticed what Rei did more because she's the
one they came to see and she's the only one who gave them details on what
she did. So.. she planned the festival and gave a concert at it. We don't
know that the other students didn't *ask* her to do this. Also.. I think
this is to show us that Rei is very talented. She's also a hard worker.
She did a tremendous amount of work to prepare herself and the others for
the festival. Anything Rei sets her mind to, she works very hard at..
that's the point we're supposed to get from it. And, we're supposed to see
that this girl who will fight so hard against the monsters can sing and
write songs as well.. it adds depth to her character. Add to that the work
we already know about that she does as a miko at her grandfather's
shrine.. Rei is very accomplished. She may be a bit high strung and
demanding, but her standards for herself are even more demanding.

hm, leave Rei alone. There's nothing hatable about her. And I, by the way,
don't even think *Raye* is a bitch.. so Rei really isn't one. Before

seriously berate anyone besides Usagi.

No, Usagi's not. That's the whole problem. Usagi is lazy and unfocused,
and only lives up to the tremendous potential we see in her when she's
under stress. This drives Rei, who gives 100% to everything she does,
absolutely nuts. So she's determined to MAKE Usagi be all that she
can be by nagging her constantly.
And actually, it seems to be working. There are signs Usagi is
concerned enough about making Rei angry at her that she tries harder
to accomplish things than she would if left to herself. So you
could say Rei is actually helping Usagi by being mean to her.

And let's not forget that Rei initially sneered at the idea of
meeting some anime artists in the first season epsiode about the
girl animators; but when the time came for the meeting she - a
closet anime/manga fan - was not only right there, she even brought
some autograph cells for them to sign.
Rei's not perfect. There is the grown up, sophisticated image
she likes to project, and then there is her real self that keeps
breaking through.

Rei is egotistical. This is because she knows she is very good at a
variety of things, and saw no reason she should not be the star of
the show, especially since nobody else seemed to be putting themselves
forward to share the spotlight. If someone else HAD indicated they
wanted to be part of the show, though, I'm sure Rei would have worked
just as hard to include them, because she is also kind.

Two points:
1. That was just in one episode.
2. She wasn't making Ami be just like her (Which was what was stated in the
previous post)...When you explain why someone is or isn't something, at
least stick to the original reasons.....

I'm a huge Rei fan, though I'll agree the NA dub version is plenty
suspect. The originals, however, really give her that sense of
character. I think she simply hides her feelings for Usagi under
agression. Her moments, however, are so heartwarming, I'm very quick to

But Usagi ISN'T doing her best, and Rei knows this. The teasing isn't to bring
her down, it's to help make her more determined to do better. If you pay closer
attention, you'll note that she teases Usagi affectionately, just as Usagi often
teases her (although sometimes Usagi has more than affection in mind)

The same can be said about Usagi and Makoto.

I happened to think that was a very touching episode. Sure she spotlighted
herself, but when you consider the sheer amout of work she did, you'll agree
that she kinda deserved it. After all, she pretty much single-handedly put that
whole festival together, according to the other students. And at the end, there
was even a sort of tender moment between her and Usagi before the usual best
friends fight broke out...
And don't think they aren't best friends... Just check out any given death scene
or whenever one of them was in mental anguishe...

seen THIS version of her before getting in to things... that's where a lot of
manga-only fans trip up, too...

Those two paragraphs could have been easily explained in a concept of only two

I like to think that's how I am...
I'm always taking on more than I can handle and still trying to keep a
nonchalant air about myself, despite the amount of stress it puts me through.
But when I'm sitting down and chatting with someone behind the scenes, I'm a
little less insistant on keeping up the illusion that I'm some being with
super-human working abilities... Just like how Rei admitted that she worked for
days on those songs only AFTER her and Usagi were alone.

I like to think of that instance being more of how she wanted to show that she
had other talents (i.e. lyricizing) than whet she normally displays. After all,
who would you rather choose...someone who's only good at one thing, or someone
who's good at amny things?
