Most manga I've seen have been done by
1. Penciling in the page
2. Inking over with markers and erasing pencil
3. using tone to shade and fill (or that dot stuff, whatever the hell it
is)
4. using whiteout to cover any mistakes and create bright spots.
(FYI, this is what I remember of the back of one of the Rayearth artbooks,
where CLAMP explained - with pictures and everything! - the process by
which they created their manga.)
Watercolors and pastel would be used not for the manga itself, but instead
for the art that went with it, I think.
Glad to be of help!

Hey! I'm planning on making a manga myself. What's yours about?

Not exactly sure yet. I'm sketching alot of possible characters but not
making a storyline until I write my SM fanfic. But most likely I'll try to
make this a full color manga so it'll take awhile. I can't stand making all
those stupid dots. ^_-
Ooh! I'm making a manga too! (Well, I'm only doing the lettering and parts of
the script...can't draw at all). It's called "Yume no naka" and...well, in a
sentence it's about four teenagers who start to have synchronized dreams taking
place in a fantasy-type world.

If I'm not mistaken, don't they use something called screen tones to do the
dots?

Specifically, 'masamichi.jpg', 'isami.jpg', 'isami2.jpg', and 'isami3.jpg'.
Isami is the main character, so far. ^_^ I like her very much.
ANYWAY! GANBATTE, MANGAKA NO MINASAMAAA!

I don't know. One of the character designs looks suspiciously close to Mamoru,
but in general...I'm part of a team of three working on it, and the other two
haven't read much manga (especially Beth, who started the whole thing). So in
general I would say that it's a degree removed (in no particular direction)
from Takeuchi-sensei's style. It's a little cuter and less detailed and
elegant.

Hmmm... our manga club at school is doing a manga, and we need the
"dots" and for part of it we're probably buying special paper from
Japan that you can sorta scrape/stick onto the page. There's lots of
awesome patterns, not only dogs but triangles, snowflakes, flowers,
cute animal background... but _very_ _very_ _very_ expensive O_o;;;
Anyone know if you can buy it online?

Manga club,...at SCHOOL?!? Lucky! About 90% of my school doesn't know what Anime is,
or say, "Do you mean that Japanimation stuff?" So when I refer to things in Japanese
and they don't know what it is I just tell them they're all, 'Baka.' ^_^
AGH! You know what? Yeasterday I was in my computer class downloading
pictures of fushigi Yuugi files. It's a grade 13 class, so you'd expect
the students to be somewhat well versed in things pertaining to high
school students. Anyway, I was asking my Chinese friends if they'd ever
seen any of the characters before, because they lived in Taiwan and Hong
Kong about three years ago. Then this guy came up and said "Is that
Japanimation? It's all pornography!" And I said "Really. Where did
you hear that from?" And he said "It was in the newspaper!" So I said
"Oh, then it must be true." Needless to say, he felt slightly silly.
However, I'm still annoyed about it. It's so common - either people
think you're a pervert, or you're obsessed with shows for little girls.
It's all because of Pokemon, I tell you!

Uh... this may sound silly, but what are the "dots" you refer to so
frequently? I've not not done manga myself (aside from a little drawing
here and there) so I don't really know the terminology...
Don't remember exactly how to spell it, but it sounds like zip-a-tone.
Most places use computers now though...

That's a pretty good idea. Let me see....Art 1 last year was 80
slackers (which mostly failed ^_~) and 10 actual artists. Art 2 will be 10
slackers and 10 actual artists. Maybe I can convince a few, but my teacher
already drags down Fantasy Artwork to her level. If I want a dragon in the
picture, Gosh Darnit, I'm going to draw it there. Whoops,...rambling. Could
work but a lot of the students weren't born with artistic want, just being
smart and proving you can LEARN anything. May try that though,....thanks for
the idea. I'll bring an art book to the first day of school next year.

Still hyped she succeeded in winning her first auction bidding.
Volume 4 is mine! ^_^
Thanx Michi-chan, but would you tell me what is a zip-a-tone??
[you can hit me know...] From the earlier posts it sounds like dots
are used for coloring or shading and the zip-a-tone is a dot product
(no put intended :) that is no longer available here in the US...
but what IS it? Some kinda press-on paper for patterns? Am I on the
right track, or did I take the wrong turn at Proxima Centauri again?

Yes, uou are right. It is a thin adhesive plastic film with small dots printed
on the front of it. There are hundreds of different patterns and dot sizes,
and you can get other effects by overlaying a couple of the sheets. Most
printing can't do a good job on grey tones, so the B/W dots are used to create
grey areas and shadows.
When you are inking/drawing a black/white manga or comic page, you leave the
areas where you want shades of grey uninked. You then put a sheet of the
Zip-a-tone over the area and then use an exacto knife or a special burning
tool to cut the Zip-a-tone sheets to the exact shape of the area. This puts
the shading into the area. You can modify the Zip-a-tone by scraping off the
dots to get other patterns.
Look at most manga to look at how they use the different Zip-a-tone effects.
By the way, Zip-a-tone is a brand name, but is so common that it is also used
as a term for any type of dot-shading product.
Jerry
Well that's just like Xerox and Kleenex. Might as well call it that ^_^
Wow! Pretty exhaustive explanation... Thanks Jerry. I'll never look at
manga the same way again... :)
It's the same with us here in Germany... We don't have any special company for
xeroxing, so it doesn't have a special name here. The main company which
produces handkerchiefs over here is "Tempo", so they're usually called after it.
Also, we have a company for duct-tape: "Tesa" - we only refer to it using that
brand name.
