From what I understand, it's also a female diminuatutive so he's
affectionately calling her "little Usagi".

the end of the anme not only to show she's maturing women but to show thier. It's
a name meant to be called by her lover.... in this case Mamoru. You will notice
the scouts never call her usako, only Darien.

Just to note, Usagi-chan also gets saddened in both anime and manga when
he drops the -ko suffix, simply calling her 'Usa'. The nickname is
simply used as a term of endearment, like his old 'Odango Atama' that
Seyia-kun uses.

You sure it's not Uso-ko? ^_-
Seriously, it's Usako because "ko" is a Japanese word-ending-kanji for
girl. Lots of girls' names in Japan end in ko; in this case, Mamoru's
being coy with Usagi's name. (It's a sort of cute shortening of the
name--sort of the difference between Rebecca and Becky, or Jennifer and
Jenny--except, when you consider the Japanese tendancy to only use last
names instead of first ones, you can see how a rather intense closeness
is implied by such usage..)
I think this is probably answered in the FAQ, much better, too..
As an aside, I'm kinda amused by the naming scheme of the translations.
What would've happened if they'd gone this way, instead;
Usagi - Rabbit
Chibiusa - Bunny
Chibichibi - Bun-bun
Chibichibi with a switchblade... kawaii.... ^_-

I am from Japan and say "My Rabbit" is very good translation.
Sometimes -ko is a prefix for women but many cases it is included in a name.
Example; Minako, Minako-chan is possible but Minako-ko is not possible.

kanji, I don't see how there's anything to be debated.

Some feminists in Japan are dropping the "ko" from their names because
they don't want to be stuck with a name that has an ending that pretty
much means 'little girl', so I guess over there there is a debate for
some.

This does not show a fault on MixxZine in anyway! It shows that they
have been doing their homework! They are following the exam same
pattern that Naoko did in naming Chibichibi.
It looks like you all should read more of the manga before being so
quick to judge.

You haven't asked ME that before.
My personal reason is that I think that riri is an ugly name, and I just don't think that
ugly name fits a cute character like chibichibi.
I am well aware of Mixx's effort to follow Naoko's pattern, but I am allowed to have an
opinion, and I don't think I need to read more manga to have an opinion.
(And if you want to get technical, they are not EXACTLY following the pattern, because they
call Usagi Bunny instead of Serena, the name serena was only mentioned once in the first book
for those that had never been introduced to anything but the NA dub.. by that token, rini
WOULD be little buns or mini buns, and Chibichibi would be something like littlelittle, or
minimini or something, Perhaps they would call her mimi.)

Hmm... I agree with Zoe that at least they would be following the
right pattern... and personally I don't think it's ugly at all.... In fact
there is a Japanese name Ririko which sounds rather kawaii to me and the
obvious nick name ould be Riri... Now this was not my first reaction (just
because I am a purist ;) but after thinking about it what would make sense
if they HAD to change the name... Riri is not a bad choice at all... IMHO.

I think initial argument was based on the dub names, not MiXX's but in this
last part I think Zoe-san was just eluding to the validity of the Riri from
Rini derivation.... as in ChibiChibi from Chibiusa.
