This article on Karl Marx, which now appears in a separate printing,
was written in 1913 (as far as I can remember) for the Granat
Encyclopaedia. A fairly detailed bibliography of literature on Marx,
mostly foreign, was appended to the article. This has been omitted in
the present edition. The editor of the Encyclopaedia, for their part,
have, for censorship reasons, deleted the end of the article on Marx,
namely, the section dealing with his revolutionary tactics.
Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce that end, because the draft
has remained among my papers somewhere in Krakow or in Switzerland. I
only remember that in the concluding part of the article I quoted,
among other things, the passage from Marx's letter to Engels of April
16, 1856, in which he wrote:
"The whole thing in Germany will depend on the possibility of
backing the proletarian revolution by some second edition of the
Peasant War. Then the affair will be splendid."

Notice what the author of the Communist Manifesto and a "forefather"
of the Communist Soviet Union said of Pre-Nazi Germany:

D.3. The Republic Besieged, 1918-1923
The Spartacist uprising:
On the far left of the USPD a radical revolutionary group had been
waiting for increasing chaos in order to provoke an allegedly "true,"
socialist revolution according to the Bolshevist model. This was the
Spartacist League, originally a part of the USDP, but calling itself
Communist Party of Germany (KPD) on 1 January 1919. Its leaders, Karl
Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, had opposed the war and had spent
several years in prison for their pacifist activity. Although they
admired the success of Lenin's revolution in 1917, they had
reservations about the undemocratic style in which Lenin consolidated
his power.
Shortly before the elections to the National Assembly, on 5 January,
the most radical workers in Berlin got out of control and started an
armed uprising. Liebknecht and Luxemburg considered the moment too
early for a revolution but felt compelled to go along. Out of a sense
of loyalty, the leaders followed the masses into catastrophe. The
radical workers occupied newspaper offices and public buildings and
called for a socialist revolution in Germany. In some other cities
similar uprisings occurred. The government, now led exclusively by the
SPD, called Free Corps into Berlin to repress the rebellion. For
several days fighting occurred in the center of Berlin. On 15 January
the uprising broke down. Luxemburg and Liebknecht were brutally
murdered by Free Corps officers. Their corpses were thrown into the
central canal of Berlin. Although the USPD and many of the workers who
mistrusted the SPD had not supported the Spartakist uprising, the
bloody intervention by the Free Corps, which were called and directed
by an SPD minister, did irreparable damage to working-class unity.
Even many moderate workers without sympathies for the Spartacists'
cause now deeply resented the SPD.
Revolution in Munich:
As if there had not been enough trouble already, a turbulent and
bloody episode seized Munich. On 21 February a rightist student shot
the Bavarian Minister President, Kurt Eisner, a USPD member. Eisner,
whose party had only received two percent of the vote at the Bavarian
state elections, was on his way to the Bavarian parliament in order to
submit his resignation. The senseless act of terror against him
triggered more violence. Shootings occurred in the parliament building
in Munich, and the USPD called a general strike in Bavaria. For
several months Bavaria remained unstable. On 7 April some Independents
seized power in Munich and proclaimed a soviet republic for all of
Bavaria. The regular government, led by an SPD member, fled to another
city. Journalists and writers formed an insurrectionary Bavarian
government (among them the author Ernst Toller). After standing aloof
for a while the Communists entered the revolutionary government and
became the dominant force, further radicalizing the government. The
Communists took and murdered several hostages. In early May 1919 a
Free Corps and regular army units repressed the Bavarian revolution
with utmost and often blind brutality incommensurate to the real
danger.
Right-wing putschism:
Free corps and a vast number of paramilitary units formed out of some
remainders of the old army, partly drawing younger people who had not
been old enough to be drafted into the army during the war. They were
on the one hand radically anti-democratic, on the other hand
passionately nationalist and opposed to every clause of the peace
treaty. They secretly hoarded arms to fight Communists and participate
in a war of liberation against France and Poland. Increasingly, they
became a serious threat to the Republic. In March 1920, some Free
Corps attempted a putsch. They occupied Berlin (without encountering
any resistance) and proclaimed the rightist Wolfgang Kapp (formerly a
close political associate of Tirpitz) new chancellor (Kapp Putsch).
When Germany's rump army refused to fight the putschists and declared
itself "neutral," the legitimate government under SPD leadership fled
to the south of Germany. The state administration in Berlin, however,
did not cooperate with the putschists (because they doubted the
success of the Kapp Putsch, not because they feared the destruction of
democracy). The working-class parties, moreover, proclaimed a general
strike. This brought down the Kapp government within a few days, even
though the war hero Ludendorff joined it. The putsch showed
dramatically how little the German army cared for the Weimar Republic;
it was not adverse to fighting leftist putschists with great brutality
but "neutral" toward rightist putschists. The same was true for the
justice system, as the mild punishments of the putschists revealed.
The success of the general strike, proclaimed by the KPD, USPD, and
the SPD strengthened worker confidence in socialist action, but the
strike turned into communist uprisings in many industrialized areas
and thus brought further trouble and chaos to the Republic.
In the aftermath of Kapp's failure radical rightists resorted to
terrorism. The murder of Kurt Eisner had set a bloody precedent, and
Matthias Erzberger (former Minister of Finance and Center Party
leader) and Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau were killed by rightist
terrorists in 1921 and 1922.
[Note: Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxemburg, Kurt Eisner, and Matthias
Erzberger were all radical leftists Jews.]

Luxemburg, Rosa (1871-1919), German socialist leader and
revolutionary, prominent in the international socialist movements in
the early years of the 20th century.
She was born on March 5, 1871, in Zamoßç, Poland (then a part of
Russia), and was educated in Warsaw, where she became active in
political societies. In 1889 she fled Poland to avoid imprisonment for
her activities and settled in Switzerland; she studied natural science
and political economy at the University of Zürich, writing a doctoral
dissertation entitled The Industrial Development of Poland (1898). In
1898 she migrated to Germany, acquiring citizenship by marriage to a
German worker, and affiliated herself with the German Social
Democratic party (SPD), the leading organization of international
socialism. During the Russian Revolution of 1905 Luxemburg went to
Warsaw to participate in the struggle and was imprisoned. After her
release she taught in the SPD school in Berlin (1907-14) and wrote The
Accumulation of Capital (1913; trans. 1951).
At the outbreak of World War I, she and the German socialist Karl
Liebknecht formed a revolutionary faction within the SPD that became
known as the Spartacists. Because of her vociferous opposition to the
war, she was imprisoned; after her release in November 1918 she helped
to transform the Spartacists into the Communist party of Germany.
Luxemburg reluctantly took part in the unsuccessful Spartacist
uprising against the government in January 1919, and both she and
Liebknecht were arrested and murdered by German troops on the 15th of
that month.

March, strikes fomented in Hamburg and Bremen
April, strikes in Kiel, Braunschweig, Berlin, Leipzig, Hanover, and

August, a naval mutiny in Willhelmshaven
December, a letter from Lenin to the Spartakist group urging his
comrades in Berlin to attack world imperialism decisively.
1918 The communists formed worker's and soldier's councils in 24
cities and by December, street fighting broke out in Berlin, organized
by the Polish Communist journalist Radek-Sobelsohn (a Jew). The result
was 100 dead.
1919 February, Bremen fell into the hands of the Spartakists, general
strikes in Elberfeld and Bochum, and a Red Army formed with its own
artillery.
March, hundreds of people died in communist inspired street fighting.
April, a communist government came into power in Munich. [Jew Kurt
Eisner had actually forcibly seized city hall as documented in the War
Against Jews by Lucy Dawidowicz and also Adolf Hitler by John Toland.]
1920 March, a communist uprising in the Ruhr in which 208 German
soldiers died and 578 were wounded.
April, under the leadership of Max Hoelz a Russian terrorist, villages
in the Vogtland district were pillaged and burned.
October, a communist riot in Hamburg with 17 people killed and 69
wounded.

1921 March, Bela Kun (a Jew) ordered to Germany by Zinoviev (also a
Jew) with instructions to German communists: There is a revolutionary
situation in Germany. The Communist Party must seize power.
March 22, Communists seized the city administration buildings in
Hamburg, Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and other cities of Central
Germany. They attacked court houses, city halls, public banks and
police headquarters. The official communist newspaper Die Rote Fahne
openly called for revolution.
Max Hoelz -mentioned under April 1920- arrived in the Mansfield copper
mining district to take charge of operations. A series of bombing
outrages took place throughout Germany and the Government recognized
Hoelz's expert hand.

Bela Kun. A Jew himself, twenty five of his
thirty-two commissars were also Jews, provoking
the London Times to characterize the regime
as 'the Jewish Mafia.'"

his family. The Jews and communists, both interchangeable, were now
threatening capitalism world wide. To be pro-business, pro-capitalism
necessarily meant you were anti-Jewish, as were anti-General Strike
business leaders, Isaac Pitblado, Hugh John McDonald and the Siftons.

November 7, 1879, in Kherson Province in Ukraine, the son of Russified
Jews. He was educated in Odessa and in Mykolayiv and was a star pupil
with enormous intellectual capabilities.

Committee.
As a Bolshevik, Trotsky was elected chairman of the Soviet in
September. He sided with Lenin on the need to overthrow the
provisional government and devoted all his energies to marshaling
support for the armed uprising of the Bolsheviks. With Lenin in
hiding, Trotsky was the general in charge, and he successfully
directed the masses of workers and soldiers in the November
revolution......

reparations! How much of what Jews claim the Nazis stole from them had
been in fact property of Christian Gentile Kulaks slaughtered by the
Bolsheviks? The Japanese Imperialists, the German Nazis and all others
accused of crimes against humanity have been tried and judged and for all
history there will be a black mark against them BUT what about Jewry and
its still viable and spreading Communism? When will they be put on trial
be made to answer for their past deeds this century? Non-Jews owe it to
history to hold these deceivers just as accountable as all the others
vilified in history!

movement and, especially, in that of modern times.
The revolutionists who were active in the Russian movement of the 80's were but
little familiar with the social ideas then agitating western Europe and America.
Their sole activity consisted in educating the people, their final goal the
destruction of the autocracy. Socialism and Anarchism were terms hardly known
even by name. Emma Goldman, too, was entirely unfamiliar with the significance
of those ideals.
She arrived in America, as four years previously in Russia, at a period of great
social and political unrest. The working people were in revolt against the
terrible labor conditions; the eight-hour movement of the Knights of Labor was
at its height, and throughout the country echoed the din of sanguine strife
between strikers and police. The struggle culminated in the great strike against
the Harvester Company of Chicago, the massacre of the strikers, and the judicial
murder of the labor leaders, which followed upon the historic Haymarket bomb
explosion. The Anarchists stood the martyr test of blood baptism. The apologists
of capitalism vainly seek to justify the killing of Parsons, Spies, Lingg,
Fischer, and Engel. Since the publication of Governor Altgeld's reasons for his
liberation of the three incarcerated Haymarket Anarchists, no doubt is left that
a fivefold legal murder had been committed in Chicago, in 1887.
Very few have grasped the significance of the Chicago martyrdom; least of all
the ruling classes. By the destruction of a number of labor leaders they thought
to stem the tide of a world-inspiring idea. They failed to consider that from
the blood of the martyrs grows the new seed, and that the frightful injustice
will win new converts to the Cause.
The two most prominent representatives of the Anarchist idea in America,
Voltairine de Cleyre and Emma Goldman--the one a native American, the other a
Russian--have been converted, like numerous others, to the ideas of Anarchism by
the judicial murder. Two women who had not known each other before, and who had
received a widely different education, were through that murder united in one
idea.
Like most working men and women of America, Emma Goldman followed the Chicago
trial with great anxiety and excitement.
Disruption is imminent with the Socialists, who have sacrificed the idea of
liberty and embraced the State and politics. The struggle is bitter, the
factions irreconcilable. This struggle is not merely between Anarchists and
Socialists; it also finds its echo within the Anarchist groups. Theoretic
differences and personal controversies lead to strife and acrimonious enmities.
The anti-Socialist legislation of Germany and Austria had driven thousands of
Socialists and Anarchists across the seas to seek refuge in America.
The labor movement of America had not been drowned in the Chicago massacre; the
murder of the Anarchists had failed to bring peace to the profit-greedy
capitalist. The struggle for the eight hour day continued. In 1892 broke out the
great strike in Pittsburg. The Homestead fight, the defeat of the Pinkertons,
the appearance of the militia, the suppression of the strikers, and the complete
triumph of the reaction are matters of comparatively recent history. Stirred to
the very depths by the terrible events at the seat of war, Alexander Berkman
resolved to sacrifice his life to the Cause and thus give an object lesson to
the wage slaves of America of active Anarchist solidarity with labor.

Something about Jewish history makes even absolute dates seem arbitrary, the
event located so surely in space and time seeming to be just a momentary
culmination of affairs begun long ago and far away. So, when I write that the
Workmen's Circle was established as a national order on September 4th, 1900, it
is only because in order to tell a story one must begin somewhere, even in the
middle. One could have as easily begun with the founding of its parent society,

Jewish tradition and the necessities of American life, reaching its peak at the
balance between old and new, between yiddishkeit (Yiddish-ness) and
Americanization, a moment during which a specific style of Jewish radicalism was
developed, during which immigrant Jews helped build the modern trade union...

An intellectual previously active in Russian populist circles, Zhitlowsky found
the platform advanced at the 1897 Zionist Congress in Basel to be seriously
flawed in its derision of Jewish diasporic culture and its utopian faith in a
Jewish homeland. In his response to the Zionists, entitled Zionism or Socialism,
he laid the foundation of Bundist ideology, writing that socialism does not
intend to abolish nations, to knead them into one dough and
to make from that dough one large loaf--mankind (in Epstein 1965: 308).
Rather, socialism would allow each people the opportunity to freely develop
their distinctive cultures. His call was for each people to govern itself
according to its own wishes (within the bounds of socialist legality, of course)
rather than kneeling down before assimilation to one great socialist culture.
Their emphasis on equality of differences contributed to the Bundist ideology of
doykeit (here-ness). In opposition to the Zionist desire for return to
Palestine, the Bundists asserted that the Jewish homeland is wherever Jews find
themselves.

Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a German political philosopher, revolutionist and
cofounder with Friedrich Engels of scientific socialism (modern communism).
Marx was born in Trier, then Prussia, and was educated at the universities of
Bonn, Berlin, and Jena. He began his studies in law at the request of his
father, but soon law was replaced with history and philosophy. Marx's father
was a Jewish lawyer who converted his family to Christianity partly in order to

consolidated to form the Communist League and Marx and Engels were commissioned
to set down a statement of their principles. The principals they submitted were
presented in the Communist Manifesto.

frequently successful, it led to an episode of violence in Chicago that resulted
in a setback for the new labor movement. The McCormick Harvester Company in
Chicago, learning in advance of the planned strike, locked out all its employees
who held union cards. Fights erupted and the police opened fire on the union
members, killing four of them. A public rally at Haymarket Square to protest the
killings drew a large and peaceful throng. As the meeting drew to a close, a
bomb exploded near the lines of police guards, and seven of the uniformed force
were killed, with some 50 persons wounded. The police began to fire into the
crowd; several more people were killed and about 200 were wounded.
Eight anarchists were arrested and charged with a capital crime. Four were
executed; four others were eventually freed by Gov. John P. Altgeld of Illinois
after he concluded that the trial had been unfairly conducted. No one knows for
certain who planted the bomb. But as Gompers ruefully commented some time later:
"The bomb not only killed the policemen, but it killed our eight-hour movement
for a few years after."
