Hostess asked the union to not strike, but the union doubled down on
their strike and now the company has decided to cease operations.
18,000 Hostess workers will now be sent to the growing unemployment
lines. What is so sad, is that the current union workers not only
destroyed themselves, but the they also destroyed the pensions of
retired Hostess workers. Destruction, is what unions are all about,
and an anachronism in these modern times.

Hostess problems began in 2004 when they filed the first of two
bankruptcy requests.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/11/hostess-bankruptcy-_n_1198789.html

"The company's filing comes nearly three years after its predecessor
emerged from bankruptcy proceedings. That company, called Interstate
Bakeries and based in Kansas City, Mo., filed for bankruptcy
protection in 2004 and changed its name to Hostess Brands after it
emerged in 2009."

And further:

"Hostess has enough cash to keep stores stocked with its Ding Dongs,
Ho Hos and other snacks for now as it battles rising labor costs and
increased competition. But longer term, the 87-year-old company has a
bigger problem: health-conscious Americans favor yogurt and energy
bars over the dessert cakes and white bread they devoured 30 years
ago."

People were not buying their products. Unions had nothing to do with
it.

MORON! then why did they still need 18,000 employees? How many union
bosses lost THEIR jobs???

That's an outdated article you cited. ANd you conveniently omitted this
part:
"Additionally, Hostess employees are unionized while most of its
competitors aren't. As a result, Hostess has high pension and medical
benefit costs."

Hostess would've survived if the union hadn't gone on strike.

You got your DNC talking points mixed up. That one was for when GM went
broke because of unions.

At any rate. Not to worry. The company will probably move to china and you
can continue to get your daily fix of cream filled ding dongs.

Rhetorical question at best. The answer? They didn't. They didn't need any
workers anymore. Wonder Bread, Twinkies and the rest of the unhealthy shit they
offered are dinosaurs of generations past. The slide rules of food so to speak.
Had they flexed with the trends, they might have had a chance to stay afloat,
but to stay with the same products for so many years is the death of even the
fittest companies. Coca-Cola, for example, even changed their products and
diversified to stay on top of the market. This had absolutely nothing to do with
union workers, whose striking was the straw that broke the camels back, rather
the owners and managers, whose shortsightedness killed the company.

No he didn't. Hostess entered Chapter 11 on its own. When they attemped
to renegotiate the contracts due to a court order, the union went on
strike, putting all of them out of work.

Thousands of members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain
Millers International Union went on strike last week after rejecting in
September a contract offer that cut wages and benefits. Hostess said Friday
the company is unprofitable "under its current cost structure, much of which
is determined by union wages and pension costs."

This is yet another classic case of union thugs killing the goose that laid
the golden egg.
Maybe Obama can bail Hostess out, too.

People were not buying GM products mainly because of the cost. And who drove
up those costs?
How about the UAW, huh????
Also, just a few months after the infamous GM bailout the sales of Ford
products increased greatly.
Why? We all know why. It was the American peoples' way of shunning GM for
taking a handout.

What a lo0ad of pure bullshit.
Little Debbie brands are still going strong and they make basically
the same products as Hostess.
And that's just one of the competitors.

Hostess could have kept it's doors open but your beloved union
effectively told them that they'd rather be out of a job with no
retirement or benefits at all than to take any kind of even temporary
pay cut.
Hostess says they can't afford the union bullshit but you who don't
work for them or know jack shit about their financial situation wants
to sit there and claim you have all the answers.
Thanks for proving yourself to be just another wannabe know it all
that in reality knows nothing.

Have you noticed that not a single dumbassed liberal poster has said a
thing about any of the workers now being without a job?
The only thing they've been posting is their stupid rationalizations
to defend the union that is actually responsible for the closing.
They were told flat out "If you don't end the strike then the company
will be forced to close its doors for good".
The union spit in their face and dared them to do it.
Let 'em scream "corporate greed" until they're blue in the face.
They still ain't got no job now.
The national union bosses get to keep their $100 thousand plus a year
salaries while the employees they claim to care so much about are now
in the unemployment line.
In their underdeveloped little minds corporate greed is bad while
union greed is good.
Stupid sons of bitches got what they deserve.

As an independent, I like things about the democrat party and some
things about the republican party.
I like the idea of fairness, advocated by the democrats, but I agree
with the Republicans that the country cannot go on borrowing to pay for
fairness.
Also raising taxes does not encourage risking capital on new venture.
Unless the rich are willing to take risk, there can be no new job creation.

I don't think this is what he means. He thinks 18,000 people loosing
there jobs is seen by republicans as good news for America. And any
failure of the Obama agenda is seen as good news for America. He's wrong
about the 18,000 lost jobs, but he is right about how republicans see
Obama's agenda. The Obama agenda, if successful would spell disaster for
America. A FUNDAMENTAL transformation of America is not what republicans
want. Furthermore, if democrats, understood this means, they would not
want this fundamental transformation either.

Obama ran on the promise of bringing about a "FUNDAMENTAL transformation
of America". I suspect this means the
American way of life is exactly what Obama wants changed.

If Obama is totally successful in implementing his agenda,
One can only wonder how many Americans will be happy with
a fundamentally transformationed America. And how can it
be an improvement over the old American way which gave us
the highest standard of living, the greatest opportunity
for personal success, the most powerful nation on
the planet, the richest country and the greatest personal
freedoms in the history of the world.

Who?? Never heard of them. Face it, a baked product that has a shelf life of
several tens of years is passé. There are too many great substitutes. Hostess
was having problems before the strike, which is evident from their bankruptcy.
Their products were no longer in demand and they didn't change with the times.

BS. They were on their last breath. Perhaps those workers should have been smart
enough to take their last few paychecks and shut the fuck up, but they weren't
and didn't. Survival of the fittest. Every smart company changes with the
trends, witness Cracker Jacks new product lines. Wonder Bread, Twinkies and
Cupcakes had't ever changed. And now they're gone. Hard cheese.

When one has less revenue, of course more costs will kill them. They had an
antiquated product line that interested not so many anymore, were hard lined and
unwilling to change with the times. A classic business school failure. Who the
fuck eats wonder bread anymore anyway?

The egg was rotten. They were in bankruptcy. That means no gold there. Or is
there something about bankruptcy that you don't understand?

Why? Good riddance. Survival of the fittest. Their product line was 1960's. FYI,
were are in a new millenium. They are still living in the past, and now they are

Kinda like how cigarette producers have also seen big declines in
production in the USA. Garsh, unhealthy junk has a hard time finding
a market, in an era where people are looking for healthier alternatives.

A National Daily Ration website will be setup, letting us know what we
will be eating for the next week, each day... Those who want a surprise
don't have to look at it.

The unemployed will be given government jobs to grow, prepare, and
deliver the meals to the people. In solar powered electric vehicles, or
horse-drawn carts where practical. Tractors will also be converted to
solar power, and horses and mules used where feasible there too.

Why trust the unreliable and greedy private food industry to feed
us? When Scientific Socialism can do it so much better, and provide
additional jobs as well?

We may allow the people to have small mini private plots and trade
fresh vegetables amongst themselves... No profiteering though! Plots
will be limited in size.. Food delivery people and drones will inspect
the plots.

It may take a few years to achieve this vision.. even extending beyond
President Obama's second term - into the Hillary Clinton or Biden admin.
Or perhaps Kerry if he does a good job as SecDef.

Some may say - this is not the American way, even my fellow
Progressives. However, why does that really matter? Why not do what
is right, and proven by Science?

As to the Ho Ho's - obviously - not needed... PURE poison. The workers
must be given good government jobs, however.

Thanks for Admitting that for the past 8 years, those 18,000 workers still
had their jobs until they walked off the job last week, causing their own
firings.

The Obamaggot meant to say the Democraps health will improve because those
18,000 will now need 99 Weeks of Unemployment pay, home mortgage assistance
from Obama, and of course food stamps like the record other 47 Million that
are addicted to them now are.

As one worker on CBS News said tonight, everything she acquired over
37 years, the middle class life she was able to build and live, was
thanks to having worked at Hostess. But she was quite willing to let
the job go rather than set herself back to a minimum wage level. And
that's what it's all about - the middle class. For good or bad,
unions built the middle class, especially in the post WW II years.
Once their power began to erode, so too did the middle class begin to
falter.

The correlation is undeniable, which explains why the US now has a
very unhealthy work force on so many different levels.

That's exactly what I want them to have. They don't get that by joining
a union. They said that 92% of those union employees voted for the
strike. The rest of them, along with all the other employees, just got
screwed.

A lot of them earned $20 per hour. That's about $40K per year. $40K
in the real world, with a family of 4 to house and feed, is not really
that much, it's basically a notch better than subsistence level.
Hostess wanted to cut it back by 30%, including slashing benefits. If
that's not being reduced to a minimum wage level, especially with the
benefits slashed or gone, then you've got no concept of money.

The pretty picture looks awfully clear and unmistakable to me. Care
to find another pretty picture that could be used as causation? No?

It isn't proof of anything beyond the fact that those two data points
declined at a similar rate over time.

> Now go find that li'l pretty picture of yours to refute mine. I know you can do it,

You claim that graph proves that a decline in union membership causes
the decline of middle class income.
Using the same graph, you could also argue the inverse - a decline in
middle class income means fewer people want to join a union.

Your graph proves nothing.

I never said it caused anything. I only said it was a correlation.
But you being a Repugnant, you obviously have to dictate the terms of
what I supposedly said and didn't say to make your tummy feel all
right wingnut warm and fuzzy.

> Using the same graph, you could also argue the inverse - a decline in

No, you'd have to use a graph that defines it as such, you can't use
the same one and redefine it to mean what you want it to mean for that
right wingnut warm and fuzzy feeling in your tummy just because you
don't like what it suggests.

To which I said: "Correlation does not equal causation."
Which prompted your reply: "The pretty picture looks awfully clear and

Are you saying that the graph DOES NOT support any claim that one causes
the other?

I didn't redefine anything. Same data. Same graph. It does not allow for
any conclusion beyond one declined as the other did.

No, that's what you're saying. Stop being so tediously evasive. I

They probably already have plans to produce all of the former Hostess bands

You should take an econ class and get back to us, First. Your logic makes
absolutely no sense whatsoever. And Edel (or Spammy as we like to call him) also
doesn't seem to have a clue. Cigarettes and alcohol have a market outside of the
US. But only Americans would buy Wonderbread and Twinkies. Their sales outside
of the US were almost null. Anyone with half a brain would know that the
capitalist system always needs new markets and products to flourish. Hostess was
locked in the '60's and died as a result. I'm surprised it took so long. That
other pastries are doing well doesn't surprise me either. With a choice between
something fresh baked and something with a shelf life in the tens of
years......give me fresh every time.
