[Correspondent's note: My god! Claude Allen, the father, was a protege
of Jesse Helms and Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources under
Gilmore. I worked with him. He had everything going for him, at least
on the surface. VERY doctrinaire right-wing. While in the Bush
Administration, he was convicted of a ridiculous theft scheme in which he
purchased a lot of stuff at Target, put it in his car and brought the
receipt back into the store, picked out the same stuff, went to Customer
Service and asked for a complete refund. Apparently, he'd been doing it
regularly by the time he was caught.

Son of ex-Va., Bush official charged in Md. slaying

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The son of a former aide to President George W. Bush
has been charged with killing a man with a hatchet.

Montgomery County police today arrested 20-year-old Claude Alexander
Allen III.

The killing occurred at a Gaithersburg home that property records show is
owned by Allen's father, Claude A. Allen. The Bush adviser pleaded guilty
to theft in 2006. He served as secretary of health and human resources in
the administration of Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore.

Police say a man called 911 around midnight to report someone tried to
break into his home. Police determined it wasn't a break-in and say the
younger Allen and the victim, 25-year-old Michael Phillip Harvey, knew
each other. Harvey's body was found in woods nearby.

A phone message left at the Allen household wasn't returned. A lawyer who
represented the younger Allen in a marijuana case declined comment.
