"Mr. Murphy, an engineer in Sulphur Springs, Tex., estimates that under the Affordable Care Act, he will face a penalty of $1,800 for going uninsured in 2016. But in his view, paying that penalty is worth it if he can avoid buying an insurance policy that costs $2,900 or more. All he has to do is stay healthy."

That's the key, isn't it? As long as he "stays healthy." Once he doesn't, then he's got problems. And unless you die first before getting those problems, most people won't stay healthy. And where is he located? Oh, right, Texas, the state that has refused to set up its own health insurance exchange and where the medical community is crying for at least an expansion of Medicaid in that state to save money as well as see more employment in the medical arena. And if the guy is an engineer, he's gotta be making pretty good money to afford insurance, so all he's being is a cheapskate. He just better "stay healthy" and also avoid any unanticipated life-threatening accidents.

My current "Obamacare compliant" health insurance premium costs $578 a
month. That's $6,936 a year. My actual medical bills over the last 5
years have averages right at $1,000 per year, annual check up and
prescriptions and what not.
If I drop health insurance and just pay out of my own pocket, those
medical bills actually go down as my annual checkup alone decreases by
over $200 if I pay cash directly to my doctor.
The tax penalty for me not having any insurance is $695.
So by dropping health coverage and paying the tax penalty I would
actually come out $5,441 better off financially than by following the
Obamacare mandate.

Until you end up in an accident that leaves you in a coma in some hospital bed for a month or two or you need heart or cancer surgery, which is for when your premiums will really be applied towards the cost of that care. What, you actually believe you can cough up $50K or 100K overnight without insurance when that would happen? Boy, you're stupid. Premiums are down payments towards future use in covering worst case scenarios, and if one lives long enough, most people will face worst case scenarios. So, yeah, boy, you're stupid again.

The idiot is so moronic that they are completely incapable of even
arguing the smallest point.

Besides, what's good for the goose...
If I ever have anything catastrophic to deal with then I can simply do
as wy or any one of the millions of Americans who simply go to the
emergency room because they can't turn you away.
Hell, does the idiot actually think that most Americans can afford to
pay the $5,000 deductibles on top of the $10,000 out of pocket that
most policies now have?
And many of them have higher out of pockets than that if you want to
get one of those $20 a month policies that they advertise on that
stupid assed Obamacare commercial.
Most folks can afford to dish out ten or fifteen thousand about as
easy as they could $300 thousand.
In other words not at all.
So why bother paying a dime if the government mandates that the
hospital cannot turn you away if in dire need and you have no
insurance.
See this is a good real life lesson in socialism for wy.
Just like many Russian factory workers who back in the day got paid no
more for being productive than the lazy slobs that did nothing at all
but collect a pay check.
With health insurance, the government has declared that you cannot be
turned away from the emergency room for not having it and if you do
have it then you're looking at having to pay out $15,000 or more. But
if you do like everyone else who doesn't pay anything into the system
then you'll bet your medical care and won't have to pay anything.
Let the other honest folks that pay the high premiums and deductibles
pay for it just like the productive factory workers made payroll for
the deadbeats in communist Russia.
Socialism. Ain't it great?

Boy, is Fist Post ever really stupid.

How does the lack of insurance affect access to health care?

People without insurance coverage have worse access to care than people who are insured. Over a quarter of uninsured adults in 2014 (27%) went without needed medical care due to cost. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that the uninsured are less likely than those with insurance to receive preventive care and services for major health conditions and chronic diseases.

What are the financial implications of lack of coverage?

The uninsured often face unaffordable medical bills when they do seek care. In 2014, nearly 36% of low- and middle-income uninsured adults said they had problems paying medical bills. These bills can quickly translate into medical debt since most of the uninsured have low or moderate incomes and have little, if any, savings.

Your sentence structure seems poor in that it sounds incomplete.
Additionally, you forgot to place a period at the end of your
