Horace Rumpole has found a new life on audiobooks. There are many fine versions, both read, which are probably the best, and dramatized. These are to be found both on Audible, which belongs to Amazon (full disclosure), and Audiobooks. Both give credits for audiobooks you purchase, and Audible will give you free credits if you don't like the offering you're reading, which you can spend on new selections.

Audible probably has the best offerings, but between the two sites, you will find readings of almost the stories of Rumpole written by his creator, John Mortimer.

Both John Mortimer and Leo McKern, the brilliant actor for whom Mortimer created Rumpole, have, alas, gone to the great Bailey in the sky. But Rumpole lives on, in a number of stories read by Leo McKern himself, which are the very best, and many others read by Robert Wallis and Robert Hardy, both brilliant in their own way. A number of other great readers are on tap, including a wonderful rendition of Rumpole's Return by Patrick Till, which I'm listening to now.

I listening to a dramatization of The Reign of Terror, which was heavily edited and somewhat inert. I am sure there are better renditions, as several of the stories, some full-length, have been read by more than one narrator. You can listen to them all, choosing your favorites, all for a very reasonable amount of money.
