Once upon a time, in a newsgroup far, far away, there was a party
thread that lasted forever. Until, one day, at the unravelling end of
creation and the final rattling gasp of time's breath, usenet
collapsed into nothingness and web forums and social networks and
comments boards took over what was whimsically called "the universe"
by people who didn't remember what the universe once was.

This is that newsgroup, and this is that thread, and I'm still here
and today is *not that day*.

Wubbles the Bear. He was King of the Prom. He had a whole colour named
after him. The colour was lavender. I don't remember why this is.

There was a great debate about whether stout and beer were the same
thing. I don't remember why. I only remember that I won. But I might
just be remembering that because I always won.

Wubbles and Contro came to e-blows over the question of whether Wales
was a separate country. One of them held an irrational and ludicrous
view based on near-absolute ignorance of any of the key terms, no
knowledge of history or politics or basic debating, and a deep-seated
inability to maintain a coherent cognitive process. The other thought
Wales was part of the UK.

E-blows, incidentally, were not what they sound like. But we can
pretend they were, because neither Wubbles nor Contro will disagree.

I do indeed, suck at Facebooking. Or blogging. Well, both are getting

I still prefer this antiquated newsgroup to modern stuff. Stupid
excessively glittery GUIs with their whizbang flashery will never
replace my love of this simpler format (still using FreeAgent, even on

Smashmouth and Lisa Loeb, among others. You got me back in the spirit,
and reminded me of a time when we all knew and accepted that R&B
sucked and shouldn't be allowed on the radio.

Looking better. Starting a new job in a few weeks that pays a better
salary, one that'll make it easier for me to save money for
travelling. Not sure what my holiday time and whatnot is like. What'd

Well, we were wanting to catch the Hindles before they left jolly old
England for the States, but that's happening in May already so not
sure if we're going to get a chance. But yeah, maybe the UK,
Controville (aka. Manchester), sometime in the next few months?

Otherwise, no big plans until my folks are over in August, we will
probably do Sweden, and then Eastern States of Australia in 2014 and
then back to Perth in 2015 for my 20th Goddamn Year Reunion for high
school.

Twenty. CUNTING. Years.

Little hint, when you want to make a Da Vinci Code reference and
Hollywood-stubble it up with Tom Hanks, you can't use Cast Away Tom
Hanks. Because you just end up looking like a crazy shit with a
volleyball on his head.

Which, let's be honest, is what you are.

You too, eh? I realised today that I might still be trapped in the

That is true. I do have the guy's contact details lying around

Or maybe not. Where's Calrton?

> Did you read the last few books? What the fuck have you been up to?

Work and videos and video games.

I'm re-watching classic Doctor Who and Star Trek TOS. I'm playing Sleeping Dogs, F1 Race Stars and Dead or Alive 5. And there's always Playstation@Home, which is a massive time-suck.

Occasionally I read some books. Mostly older ones I get for free off Gutenberg. Currently working through the books of H. Rider Haggard (19th century drama, including fantasy and alternate history).

Cal r-Ton, he was Superman's drunk brother-in-law.

I've kind of been working backwards through speculative fiction. Haggard's hidden worlds inspired people like Edgar Rice Burroughs.

You're not going to get us to like you if you don't wear a hat to the party! Come on, it's only been 18 years. You should know this stuff.

It's a tragedy. And comedy.

Also I don't know if I ever read that bit Chucky posted about how Contro and I arguing but it's gold. I think that was the most I ever wrote on this dumb ng.

I spend 10 years waiting for Contro to come back. I go away for 7 years and he’s been and gone again. This is a let down.

There's something comforting and familiar about being let down by AFRJ, and letting it down in return.

Let's see if we can find one that isn't dust.

Now we just need to wait for Contro. He should be here any day now.

Of course, Google has dropped a lot of posts from this thread but given that we started it in 1999 - this party is a solid 21 years old at this point and still going strong even if "strong" now has to be defined as "two middle-aged-adjacent nerdlingers standing at the bar drinking shots of dust" which, let's be honest here, has pretty much always been what "strong" meant anyway, and - 'scuse me -

*drinks more dust*

- and I think it's high time we all just admitted to the fact that "strong" has always meant "two middle-aged-adjacent nerdlingers standing at the bar drinking shots of dust", and ... and what exactly is in this dust anyway?

Yep. The dust on this bar has not been cleaned for a long time. We will
need a maid or a bartender.

The thread is so old that people born when this thread started have

He's semi-active on Facebook but I haven't seen him on Usenet in forever.

This is why we party for him!

I'm not sure that's a comparison that's ever been made, and we've been waiting for Contro for an awfully long time.
