I would write a Debs-monologue here, about the terrible state of
repair the Next Book Inn is in right now ... but I just don't have it
in me. My broadband isn't broad enough to channel Debs, boom boom.

*sigh*

So yeah, the next Jordan book is out. We don't have it yet, but it's
out. Anyone got it? Let's kick this ant hill.

I've just picked it up from the shops on my lunch break. It is
sitting on my desk taunting me with the knowledge that I probably
won't get a chance to start reading it until tomorrow.

The fiance doesn't understand why I had to get it today, when my
birthday is 'just' a month away and it would have been an excellent
idea for a present. A month! How many others could have read it
before me in that time!?

I caved and picked it up Saturday afternoon. Am already 200 pages into

hasn't been since The Fires of Heaven. Things Happen, and there's a
marked reduction in descriptions of clothing, men not understanding

Agreed, it was very nicely done. Only a couple of parts dragged
painfully - like the Gawyn bits and the Mat and Perrin bits - and even
they had their pay-offs. And may have seemed so draggy because they
were used to break up interesting bits like Rand and Egwene's
storyline, that I never wanted to stop.

"Oh come on! They're doing things! Don't stop there!"

Mind you, the last three books or more have dragged like the worst
parts of this one. I mean, I thought the best part of "Knife of
Dreams" was the Egwene chapters, and not because of the spankings. And
it just got better in this book.

> Dave "there are MULTIPLE Crowning Moments of Awesomeness involved. And we have

I'm trying to decide whether it would have been cooler if Rand had
killed Tam, or if that would have just been too much like Lews Therin
all over again.

I may have to make some separate threads for some of the stuff in this
book.

I don't know, I had a giggle when one of his peeps called him a
whiner. There's a nice payoff after ten years of Janica saying pretty
much exactly the same thing.

I think Sanderson has done his best to fix up a lot of these
characters. Nynaeve grips her braid but only tugs it once or twice. A
few women fold their arms under their breasts but they're not all in-
your-face about it. And in this book, unlike all the others, when
someone does something that impacts the other threads of the story,
the people in the other threads generally hear about it.

I'm still waiting for Gawyn to realise that a) his mother is still
alive and b) that Rand did the right thing all along, but I guess we
can't have everything. Egwene telling him to sit the fuck down and
Bryne telling him his mother was Lord Gaebril's bitch was a good
start. By midway through the next book, I'm predicting that Gawyn will
actually have a clue.

Explains neatly that bit where she apparently lied in an earlier book.
Does make one wonder how much of it was planned and how much of it was
a plot-shift to cover up an earlier blunder.

If it was a plot-shift to make a retcon, it was very freaking cool.
Made Verin bad without actually having to be bad, and it managed to
deal with most of the Black Ajah at the same time.

C@w

And Sanderson pre-empted anyone who was about to say "that's a pretty
dumb loophole in the Dark One's vows" by making Egwene and Verin say
it themselves. Nice one. Although the Dark One is still a tit.

Actually it's not. There are at least two or three psychotic Scottish

> Glad to see that so many of you were right about someone's identity.

I'm still holding out hope for a turn-around. Rand's use of the True
Power and entering Moridin's dream are clear precursors to him
blending with the anti-Dragon, and now that Lews Therin is out of the
way we can get on with it.

Ishamael was only ever kidding himself about being the anti-Dragon,
and Moridin still gets pissed when people assume he's Ishamael, even
though he is happy to let them believe it. I'm still keeping faith
that this won't be a stupid waste of a good character. Sanderson has
given me reason to believe again.

Damn right, he's managed to write an 800 pager without that much
padding at all. He still could have cut a few pages of some of the
chapters, but I guess to have that sense of crawling time and epic
extent, you need to put in some filler.

Well let's call fair fair, and admit that Knife of Dreams was a marked
improvement over all of the WoT books from book 7 onwards, and not
just a marked improvement, but a drastic improvement.

If there was filler in TGS, I did not see it. Honestly. Barring a bit
of necessary descriptive prose, and maybe the prologue with the
farmer, there was scant little that didn't feel like Sanderson trying
his very hardest to wrap Everything up in a way that (a) made sense
and (b) wasn't incredibly stupid.

But true.

Well, he was way more annoying before.

There were a few such parts. I'm pleased to announce that I knew what
Aviendha was doing wrong in her Wise One test about 600 pages before
she did.

Which isn't really saying much, since most of us know 600 pages ahead
of the characters what is actually going on. If not more.

It was good. "The Gathering Storm" was better.

And I don't know if I've ever said that about the latest Pratchett vs.
the latest Jordan.

C&J

Sure, Jordan is dead and somebody else wrote his book and Pratchett
has Alzheimer's, but still. Holy crap.

It was not me who silenced Ilya this time. But it was funny.

Yeah. But insensitive.

Serious. They were annoying as all fuck for about four books.
Sanderson paired them up and made them act like God damn adults.
Finally.

I can get behind that proposition.

And this one.

Well, I confess to rolling my eyes every time a Gawyn chapter came up.
Those were a bit uneventful. But even those, he tossed in a few nice
gory Bubbles of Evil(TM) to liven things up.

Yeah. Fair enough. We did need the farmer scene though, as without it
we would still not know what was going on in the Borderlands. They're
basically ... uh, rallying? or fleeing?

Flallying.
