Argh!
I have just been deliberately targeted by a spammer because I posted on afp

This is the crap I just received:

'Hi MelodyS-K!

Just so you know I saw your name in the
newsgroup alt.fan.pratchett. So I emailed you.

What would you do if you had extra money?
A nice steady flow of income that is
residual month after month? What would
you do if you had a great product to
promote? We show you exactly how it's all
done! We invite you to join our free
mailing list subscription. You will
receive mailings about out products,
business opportunities, ways to make your
profits go through the ROOF, and so much
MORE! All you have to do is send an email
to makemo...@hotpop.com with the subject
'Mailing List Subscription'.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!'

Did anyone else get this?

Not a targetted spam. It just yanked the group name when it grepped and
inserted it into the mail in a vain attempt to look more like a friend and
less like the syphilitic scumbag that it is.

> Did anyone else get this?

Not me, but thank you for posting his e-mail address so that we've all
effectively been spammed.

Aye, same here, sent to my spamgourmet address.

I replied, from the spamgourmet address, saying "it's honest spam, but
it's still spam"

OTOH, it's possible that some spamming scumbag will pick up the spammer's
address and spam him.

I'm guessing that Hotpop LLC have themselves got some pretty heavy spam

Mind you, there's absolutely nothing to stop people sending lots and lots of

Or, if you prefer, ringing them up at +1 617-441-0917

And Cogent appear to be their upstream.

They wouldn't anyway as the address isn't in the headers, only in the
body of the post and I don't think there are any harvesters that grab
bodies. One reason why reply-to is still not usually harvested, as I
believe it is not in the basic headers grabbed by the bots.

Mart - not a spam geek, so probably wrong.

Possibly but if so I deleted it on the server. I check with kshowmail and
if it's not from someone I know or the mailing list I'm on I don't even
see what it's about, I just delete on the server.

Rule #3 says that spammers are stoopid. I have in the past seen spams
so b0rken that there is no way on Earth for Spammy's
vic^Wsuck^Wcustomers to contact him. The asssertion that spammers are
stoopid is borne out further down this thread wherin a spam is posted
that shows that Spammy was either too impatient to let it harvest
addresses, or too thick to get it to work properly.

It's even odds that Spammy gets results from this spam. Too bad the
damage is already done :(
