I've been trying to translate some of the Latin mottoes which crop up.
Can anyone clarify the ones with an asterisk.
City of Ankh-Morpork,
Quanti canicula illa in fenestra. - How much is that doggie in the
window. (Anyone know why?)
Guild of Fools and Joculators,
Dico! Dico! Dico! - I say! I say! I say!
Beggars Guild,
Moneta supervacanea, magister - Got any spare change, guv?
Unseen University,
Nunc id vides, nunc ne vides - Now you see it, now you don't.
*Nobbs Family,
Capite omnia - Head of everything.
*Assassins Guild,
Nil mortifico sine lucre. - No death/killing before money/payment.
*City Watch,
Merus in pectus et in aquam - Pure in chest (heart?) and water.
*Vetinari the Patrician
Si non confectus non reficiat. - If you're not ready you won't be
refreshed/restored (?????)
*Thieves' Guild
Acutus id verberat - Sharpened it ?? somethingorother
The last two are very dodgy. Are there any classical scholars out
there.

I would think it does have something to do with shit because the
"excretus" part has been used before. The Gamblers' Guild has the motto
"excretus ex fortuna" which is translated sanitised as "really out of
luck" and was more fully translated somewhere else as "shit out of
luck."
Most likely Vimes' motto relates to that, otherwise there is a massive
coincidence that both mottoes just happen to have a scatological
reference. I guessed that the other one was "flushed down the toilet."

If the way I see it is correct, the confusion here stems from the idea that
this was Vimes's family motto. But by context I'd say that what is actually
being said is what happened to the Coat of Arms - It's a technical term from
the college of heralds.

I would interpret it as "Shat on from a great height", which is a not
uncommon colloquialism.

But this isn't *proper* book-learned Latin, it's just a rendering
of English expressions into Latin-sounding phrases. So I'd say that
"flushed down the toilet" is probably a pretty good guess.
