Would anybody like to apologize for the hatchet job I received for
saying basically the same thing as the article, months before it came
out? If so, feel free to do so in email, since I'm not reading the
group. I have been saying for years that "Global Warming" is religion,
rather than science, based on faith rather than facts. Now everybody
knows that this is so.

Much as I love you, Rocky, I have to agree here, with both bits.

Though to be fair, the Grauniad's is just as vague, with just as few
actual facts (but somewhat funnier; whatever one's opinion of George
Monbiot, there's no point in pretending that he can't write). This
subject raises emotions to an unreasonable height on both sides.

I can't find the e-mails themselves anywhere, just cherry-picked bits
from them and a lot of opinions about them.

Back to that one again. Rather kind of the gods to provide such strong
support of my side of that argument just at the right time.

I think the jury's still out on the culpability bit. Humans do seem to
be contributing to the global warming that is undoubtedly happening, but
the extent of our criminal activity is not yet decided. Still, whatever
the causes, not wasting fuel and not creating pollution [1] have to be
Good Things in their own right.

That's one point that Monbiot makes rather well: Just /why/ would this
giant conspiracy be perpetrated? It's the same as the one about
fluoride: Why would all the dentists of the developed world be so
anxious to destroy the health of all the children in their countries?
[1] By which I means particles, toxic materials etc., not carbon. There
are plenty of good uses for CO2, including using it directly to make fuel.

There is no conspiracy except for the ability of the Human Race to fuck up
and then try to blame someone else. We conspire amongst ourselves, without
communication, to pretend that "A Big Boy did it and ran away". As long as
we can blame someone else we can individually feel warm, cosy and self-
righteous.
Make the most of it while it lasts.

Despite this little glitch, it seems we will soon be feeling
considerably warmer. Coziness will follow as the night the day, and we
don't need any excuse to feel self-righteous.
Good.

Maybe I missed the line where you explained it was specifically East
Anglicanism.
Do you really think that one jumped-up so-called university in England
that makes the RAND Corporation look like the college Methuselah's
grandfather attended, turned the whole world upside down? Even if
everyone there /was/ actually an Auditor, they wouldn't have the
pull.
I'll take a guess that most of the universities whose charter
currently is religious are in the U.S. A few centuries ago, of
course, that was true of Oxford and Cambridge - the real ones - so
maybe a few centuries from now, the Rocky Islands in the centre of the
Pacifilantic Waterworld will have followed us - not underwater but to
being secular in terms of abstract intellectual effort.
