Well I don't know about everyone else but I'm thinking about going in a
pair of nice trousers and a shirt since that is about as formal I want
to be under circumstances like this.
I'm assuming from the pictures I have seen that most things work but I
would think that the best thing to do would be to come in something one

Me!
Probably the whole shebang. Black trousers, black dinner jacket, frilly
shirt, bow tie and waistcoat. But not because I have to but because it 's
fun. I don't get the opportunity to wear them often and it's nice to really
dress up sometimes.
So the answer is wear whatever you want to wear, whatever you feel
comfortable in.

There's only one formal dinner and that's the Gala Dinner on Sunday
night (not the Opening night - unless you're only planning on arriving
Sunday afternoon of course <g>).
In the past they've always specified formal dress or fancy dress. As
I'm not intending to go this year (I will try to catch the Toast and
Jam instead) I'm not sure if they've changed this or not. Last year
those of us helping out with Watch duties were asked to spruce up too.
I've heard that there will be a buffet for those of us stupid^W eager
enough to turn up on the Thursday, but this may just be a vicious
rumour as I can't find anything about it on the web site. I can't
imagine that being formal though. <g>

I'm not going to the Gala Dinner this year, but I did go last time, and
I wore a black top with a floaty skirt - in other words, not
particularly formal, but looked dressed-up enough for the occasion.
ISTR at least two other people on my table had gone for that sort of
thing too (although, to be honest, we were in the minority)
Those not attending the Gala Dinner may still like to watch the
pre-Dinner ceremony that takes place in the quadrant part of the hotel,
which is good fun.

It was on the Con web site as part of the hotel booking system (which
has been closed as the hotel is now full).
The orginal text was as follows:

On Thursday evening a buffet supper will be provided for those
Convention attendees who wish to eat in the hotel.
If you wish to take advantage of this, you *must* book your place in
advance.
The buffet will include a variety of hot and cold dishes plus desserts
at a cost of £8 per person which is to be paid directly to the hotel on

Why not bring both? (If you've got enough luggage room, that is -
might pose a problem if you're trying to travel light). Then you can
see what the weather's like on the evening, and what you feel like
wearing, and choose the outfit then.
Also, if you're wearing the tux for the Gala Dinner, you could always
wear the corset to the Toast and Jam afterwards. Or to the AFParty on
Saturday night.
CCA
The red top didn't allow the sunburn, this did:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c331/esmeraldus/6434Stacieandothers.jpg
That's the issue. I know I will have a laptop bag that doesn't leave my
presence on plains or trains. I'll have a mid-sized case on rollers for a
second bag. I can also have a third bag, but there are points at which I may
have to wrangle all of it alone.
I don't think so, but maybe. There might be a few short walking intervals.

frequently is

Adrian.
I think you're going to have to treat it as a role playing game[1],
and choose the outfit that is likely to give you what you want at
this venue.
Are you likely to meet people that you'd like to impress with
your intellect rather than your incredibly luscious person? Then
you might want the tux. Is this an opportunity to have a real
life flirt-a-thon, and to make suggestions and implications that
you might or might not follow through with later? Then you
might want the racey foundation garment.
If you play the gala dinner scenerio in your head - what are
you wearing?
Or, for a different approach - how often will you wear the
tux while abroad? How often will you wear the corset?
Sometimes it boils down to what will fit in the suitcase &
be worth lugging around. The tux will require special shoes,
too. I never have enough room for all the appropriate
shoes, even if the outfits will fit in the suitcase.
April.
[1] - I know it already is, as is every day, but people forget.

You know, that is PRECISELY the effect I was going for. I am gratified
beyond measure that it works so well.
For people who are following the What to Wear saga, a "dress" option has
been added to the blog post (in which I waffle between the tuxedo and the
corset & leather).

What I want is to attract people of intellect, be witty at them, and have to
retrieve their eyeballs from my bosom. I want to cause serious tension
between looking at me and listening to me, with a reluctant decision in
favor of listening.
You know, ideally.

Once, I think.

As many times as possible, almost certainly more than once. And it folds up
VERY small indeed. I can bring my whole selection in the same space as the
tux jacket.
Sadly, I think that tears it.

I'm not that interested in the pants, so much as in the fact that the
person wearing them is so eminently huggable! ;-) It's the extremely
casual, relaxed look that keeps me coming back to that photograph.
The clothing sends somewhat mixed signals about what you might be
planning to _do_, but I rarely bother to think about that. The shoes
suggest going outdoors, whereas the pants look more like winter
pyjamas than anything else. The t-shirt could be for any casual
daytime activity. Putting it all together, if I were to try to weave a
story around what someone might be planning to do dressed like that,
I'd say that they are planning to settle down and watch a late-night
movie on the television, but also have some small outdoor chores to be
done during the advertisements. That fits. Almost.
Except that it's clearly daylight through the window, which buggers
that theory.

*applause* in favour of your being honest about it. Many women would
have added "so that I can complain about them staring".
In that case, just for the sake of it, perhaps I should go in full
Royal Military Police #2 dress? I just happen to have a set lying
about...
(Actually, that's a though. Do you still have your BDUs?)
Damn, I keep thinking by "pants" you mean "underwear" :)

Well, for all we know, that too.

Better idea - Torak goes in the ball gown and Stacie goes in the RMP kit.

I think in your case[1], turning up would achieve both aims :) Your
intellect is easily apparent from your postings (and of course your
blog/CV), while your looks cannot be doubted IMHO :)

Again, turn up and it will happen :)[2]0
[1] I'm not saying there are no others in the group, simply that I have
not seen them.
[2] Have I subconsciously nicked that line or something close? Something
about 'do it and they will come'?

Those of us with a steeper viewing angle however generally have a tougher
time as the bosom tends to be in the flight path to the face, in a manner
of speaking :)
That's MY excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it :)

"If you build it they will come" from "Field of Dreams"; "it"
being a baseball pitch and "they" being famous dead ball
players.

I'll have to introduce you to Heather, you've got a lot in common.

I like both dresses, but the tux looks very striking (as long as the
weather's not too not, of course)

I do, but those aren't formal....
I vote for the little black Schroedinger's Dress.

Egad! No wonder! That's my favorite so far, too.
There are quite a few of us who have a pretty steep viewing angle, only
in the other direction. Of course, this decreases the angular distance.

Unfortunately I don't think that would work with me as I've so well
educated myself to look at the face not the figure when talking to women
that I managed over an hour of talking to Loriba without realising she
had black leather trousers on!
( Heather at DWCon 2004 doesn't count due to our relative positions!
